when I lost you

It has been five years since you passed away,
Early one snowy New Year's day.

You were my world, my reason, my life,
And I took pride in being your wife.

I was always the childish one,
The one that begged you to always have fun.

The one surprising you from shadows in our hall,
As you were the one to always stand tall.

For I was continuously the childlike one,
That whined softly when our nights were done.

The one that dragged you to dance in the rain,
You in your business attire, and me being a pain.

The one that pouted when your pager rang out,
It was just minutes from our happy New Year's shout.

I remember you sighed and softly kissed my head,
And swore to me that you would soon be in bed.

I watched the clock, the year came to an end,
Sirens screamed wildly coming around the bend.

I knew before I opened the door,
That our loving marriage was no more.

With you gone, not only my heart,
But my logic, my world and I fell apart.

I was never able to tell you I needed you so,
Your wisdom and your knowledge to help me grow.

That you made it easy for me to be free,
Knowing that you would always save me.

It has been five years since you passed away,
I always cry, every New Year's day.
