AT THE RIVERS EDGE

It was not yet dusk
when I started walking;
I needed time alone,
no need for talking.

The roar of the river
was loud in my ears,
Drowning the sounds
of too many tears.

At the rivers edge
I paused for awhile,
The tears dried and
soon I could smile.

Dusk settled around me
and the river grew dark;
In the distance I heard
my little dog bark.

I hurried back home
to a tiny brown mutt;
It's not what I lost
but what I have got!

Sweet wet kisses
upon my face;
A roar like a lion
put me in my place!
