The shark came out of the red, and he chased the little fish all around. |
The Rainbow Shark I peered at the clouds And looked once again. Someone had robbed Where the blue had been. They took it, I say. But I can’t tell why, But they stole that blue From out of the sky. A rainbow was arched As rainbows should be, But this one bled fish As if it were sea. I watched through the rain Where the sun shed its light, And one of those fish Turned and tore a big bite. Now we'd lost all our sky And the rainbow’s bright green. Whatever was happening? What did it all mean? Then out from the depths In between orange and red, Came a long-toothed shark Wanting to be fed. He chased those poor fish In and out of the hues, And he swam oh, so fast. Soon the colors all moved. The orange melded yellow. The violet blotched red. The colors kept whirring Until they all spread. Goodbye, dear rainbow. Hello, splotch of paint. I just couldn’t take it. I began to grow faint. Then I gathered my breath And yelled out really loud, “Stop it, you two. That’s enough!” The shark glared a thundercloud. He barked, and then he growled. He flipped, flopped and dove at me. I turned to run, but then I stopped, And slowly counted from one to three. “Silly shark," I said as he came near. “Can’t you see the sky’s all a jumble? Doesn't your mother say you must clean? Go back and give that rainbow a tumble. “Do it before I count to five, Or I will definitely call my mom, And she will scowl and really yell. I guarantee, she won’t be calm. “She does not like a bit of mess. So clean that rainbow extra fast. Forget those funny, silly fish And fix that rainbow. Make it last.” The shark looked over to his left. He looked up and then looked down. And with an open mouth, he grinned. Until my mother stood up and frowned. She swung her brand new briefcase At that grumpy, toothsome shark. He whimpered loudly, then turned back To place those colors in an arc. When he was done, he swam away. We stood still and watched the sky As it painted itself, including the blue. Then Mom and I, we smiled and sighed. We never saw that shark again, He'd swum beneath the violets and blues, And now there's only a rainbow's grin With an arch of seven colored hues. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
