poem for mother's day

Mother's Day Wine

"Wine is soul food," she said.
We toasted and drank again,
languid in the emerald-green heat
of a Florida May afternoon.

The poinciana spread a feathery canopy above us.

Our toes bare and warmed on the concrete patio.

"Wine is like friendship, it is about
seasons," she said, "memories and celebrations."

The wine tasted of orange blossoms and honeysuckle.

It smelt of sweet dried hay.

We sat and drank and drifted,
two old friends, cocooned in May wine,
bouyant with such shimmering green happiness

we knew it to be a benediction.

A psalm to wine,
to friendship,
to motherhood,
to life.
