Look deep into her eyes and you will see...
Nobody's Listening

She keeps to herself
She's quite shy,
She doesn't say much,
But... nobody's listening.

They look in my eyes
Yet they cannot read them
They can't see the hurt.
The depression, the anger
I really want to talk
but the words seems trapped
entangled in fear
and afraid of the shame

You wonder why I'm anorexic
You really can't tell?
My daddy blames my mommy
"She's not eating. Why?"
My mommy just doesn't know
"I can't force her, can I?"

If you were listening
you'll know why
they touched me in places,
That I didn't want to be touched
Everyday while I waited
For you to come home
I was in agony
and pretty distraught

Sometimes I'd pray
To the virgin Mary,
Hoping she would see my plight
And bring me out of it
I would often imagine her being my protector
But when all was said and done
I was still abused by a child molester

So they say she's quite shy
Just keeps to herself
Doesn't say a word
But that's just how she is,
Maybe, if they looked into her eyes...
deeply, they will see
Yet nobody knew
Her eyes told a story.

Footnote: I receive several comments on why I use they, you, I, her and my. Several reviewer found that to be confusing, but if I was to use one person singular or stick to they, the concept of the poem would have been completely different. I wanted you, the reviewers to get into the mind of an abused victim. The confusion that a helpless child feels internally. Yes, I am talking to You, I, They and them and everyone else that surrounded me at that particular time in my life.
