She sits praying for him to return
The night is still, the air is cold.
The moon glows behind the cloud
Only the nightjar could have told
Why she sits without a sound

Her eyes adjust to the gathering gloom.
Her body shakes with dread.
She waits alone outside the tomb
For him to raise up from the dead

He’d promised her he’d never leave,
And yet that’s what he did.
But every night she grieves and waits
For the sound of a lifting lid

If her presence he can feel
How can he deny?
Her lips with his he’d seal
And his with hers, she would reply.

But dawn, it fast approaches.
Another vigil passes by.
Bird song, dawn’s light encroaches,
Lighting up the morning sky.

From her place of contemplation
She rises, cold, hopes dashed.
She has, she feels, her confirmation
He’s gone, forever. Passed.
