Title: Assignment #32 Who I Write For

In our latest Terrace assignment we are challenged to ask ourselves who our target audience is. When I think about writing, and who my intended audience usually is I find an interesting answer, or answers.

I write for myself most of the time. I am usually my intended audience. Sometimes I write for my friends. On occasion I write for a contest in which case I find myself much more uncertain about my pieces. A few times I wrote for the Terrace. It takes time to adjust to an audience, to learn what will make them rave about your story. You have to learn about their interests. It's best if you really get to know them.

When you think of these terms it's easy to understand the need for a target audience. I often write for teens, because I like to set stories in high school or junior high, but am I really targeting teens? Do I know them well enough to consider them a valid target? I no longer live in their world. I'm well into adulthood and while I read Harry Potter every bit as enthusiastically as some teens I've met, I have a heck of a time watching these teens who don't tie their shoes walk down the sidewalk with their pants falling off. I want to yell, "hey, tie your shoes before you trip over them and pull up your pants for heavens sake."

I don't know. Lately much of my content has been mainstream adult, but I think that has to do with who I've been writing for here at writing.com. Overall I think my usual audience is adults who like to read about teens. That may not be a very large audience. I certainly wouldn't know how to begin finding a place to sell such content.

I think if I want to continue writing for teens I need to return to my former hobby of reading popular young adult novels so that I can stay with the times.

Upshot:

My usual audience is older teens, ages 14 and up.

I haven't been writing for my usual audience lately.

I may need to resume reading what my target audience reads in order to refresh my abilities and stay in touch with them.
