Explanations and instructions of all things Writing.Com.
Chat can be a great tool for communicating with other members of Writing.com. You can use Chat to relax and take a break from the daily grind, but it can also be useful for bouncing ideas off other writers. There are a few critique groups that use Chat for real-time meetings. There are several pre-made chat rooms to chose from or you can also create your own private rooms.
Setting Up to Use Chat
Chat runs in a pop-up window. Your browser must allow Writing.Com to use pop-up windows.
Chat runs using Flash. Your browser must have Flash, either incorporated or added as a plug-in, and it must be enabled. Note that iPad doesn't support Flash.
In the left hand navigation menu, click on Writing.Com Tools/Chat.
If you have web browser problems accessing chat, clear your web browser's cache (temporary internet files), close all browser windows, restart your web browser and then try to access chat again.
Before you enter Chat, you can choose or change your avatar, and you must agree to the following rules:
Chat is available to site members with a Basic Membership or higher.
The "Lobby", our main chatroom area, may not exceed a 13+ content rating. Members who are not 13 or those who may be offended by 13+ content are advised to avoid chat.
Individuals under the age of 18 must be under direct local adult supervision while using chat or any area of Writing.Com.
The chatroom will automatically warn and/or kick you out of the system for flooding messages into the room.
Harrassment of other members, by any means within Writing.Com, is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated.
All chatroom activity is logged and failure to follow site rules may lead to the loss of chat room privileges and/or sitewide access restrictions.
No chat is "private" and Writing.Com will fully cooperate with any valid law enforcement agency that requests logs and/or chat transcripts.
New rules may be added as needed.
While Using Chat
Additional information about using chat is documented in the chat help page, which can be accessed by clicking on the blue question mark icon above the main chat window. You can also adjust the settings to suit your preferences, by clicking the gear icon above the main chat window.
Warning: Please DO NOT CLICK any links in the chat screen.
We have found that if you CLICK A LINK in chat, the site you visit receives a referring URL that allows one to enter chat under your account for a brief period of time. Access is also limited only to chat. Unfortunately, our attempts to fix this have failed.
In chat, members are identified by their usernames rather than their handles. This is to prevent impersonation.
Saving a chat transcript includes all the private messages listed in that transcript.
Private "tabbed" chat room transcripts must be saved separately.
If the usernames in a transcript present an identification problem, saved transcripts can be edited in word processing software to globally change usernames to the preferred names.1
