Harvest moon's luster
illuminates pumpkin patch
with scarecrow on guard,

but goblins are not deterred
from partying where they please.

They occupy field,
as horny owl adds his voice
to the grisly scene.

Hubby takes over
cooking dinner, mopping floors,
getting kids to school,
because wife is called to duty
and answers without a flinch.

That is how it goes
within the family routine
while she is deployed.

They raise and support
a proud group of heroes,
volunteering to thwart
the evil in this world,

until the terminal
sacrifice is unfurled,
stretching emotional
impact to its limits.

My stubborn heart
refuses to give up.

Once upon a time,
wallowing through Hell--
no home, no love, no hope,
sleeping in the bushes.

It has been a long road back,
but here I am,
sleeping in a warm bed
with healthy meals
and loving family.

The Tin Can Navy roams the high seas
in search of submarine enemies.
Bouncing around on rolling waves,
we tried to send our foes to ocean graves,
while defending our liberties.

We went without the luxuries,
endured despite a few miseries,
because of challenges the crew braves
in the Tin Can Navy.

Our many nautical odysseys
to distant places provided the keys
to great adventures a young man craves.
These days, I ride nostalgic waves
across a sea of memories
from the Tin Can Navy.

Everybody needs a hero.
I struck it rich,
was granted two.

My mom and dad were there for me
through good and bad,
no matter what.

They guided me along the path
past obstacles
to my future.

Up and down steep hills we went.
We did struggle,
but here I am.

sandy, crowded
swimming, surfing, burning
tides, dunes, streams, trails
hiking, camping, puffing
rocky, steep

The train of time
keeps on rolling
down the tracks,
past birthdays,
graduations,
weddings, retirement,
and obituary.

Still,
the train of time
keeps on rolling.

I remember when you and me,
sitting under the apple tree,
launched destiny with our first kiss,
and thus began our years of bliss.

Our wedding vows with family,
taken under the apple tree,
secured the bond to last through years
of laughter, arguments, and tears.

Our kids enjoyed their revelry,
running around the apple tree,
as they matured into adults,
making us happy with results.

So, here we are again, you and me
buried under the apple tree,
together for eternity.

Buffalo soldiers
made their mark in history
showing bravery
and tenaciousness in spades,
despite racial prejudice
and native unrest.
For years of loyal service,
we still salute them.
