An award-winning author, a young boy's masterpiece, and a lesson learned. by David C
The items word count, from the items settings shows 2,057 words. However, the word count I have from Microsoft Word (where the story was originally written) shows 1,893 words. This is a pretty significant difference. It matters particularly because I'm entering into a contest which requires 2000 words or less. Can anyone tell me why the writing.com tool word count is higher (and seems inflated).
I checked in both Word and WdC and got 1885 words for this piece.
Okay, certain things are counted as words in WdC that are not in Word, with em-dashes being the main one. If you put spaces around punctuation or don't put required spaces around punctuation, this can also affect the word count.
But using WdC's count (just the story, not the title or any other notes), Word 2010's count and the Teacher Tool word count, this is 1885 words, so you are fine.
