Brothers
WC: 294

I proofread my brother’s term paper, marking it with red strokes.

“Come on Allen, it’s not that bad, is it?”

“Well no, but you have some errors.” I always try to be diplomatic with Charlie because of his temper. “Their names aren’t spelled that way.”

He had typed Cane and Able instead of Cain and Abel. “It’s C–a-i-n and A-b-e-l, not--”

“I sounded it out.”

“So you didn’t read the reference material?” I knew he hadn’t. Charlie always takes the easy way out.

“I looked it over. Anyway, I know the story from Sunday school.”

“That was what, fifteen years ago? Your memory’s a little cloudy.”

“Yeah, how?”

“Well for one thing, Cain didn’t kill Abel with a knife.”

“Sure he did.” He pressed the button on his switchblade. “That’s how I would do it.”

I scooted my chair back a bit.

He closed the knife and slipped it into his pocket. “Only kidding, Al.” He inched his chair closer. “So how did he do it?”

“The Bible doesn’t say, just that Cain assaulted him.”

“Will I pass?”

Unless the changes I suggested were made, he would get an “F” and flunk the course.

“If you make the changes, you’ll get an okay grade on this and, depending on what your other work reflects, you might just squeak by.”

“How ‘bout you fix it for me?” He smiled wide. “That way I know I’ll get an A plus,” he said, his face frozen in a grin as he reached into his pocket.

I had spent most of my life bailing out my older brother, running interference for him. Knife or no knife, I had to let him stand on his own.

“Not this time, Charlie.”

My brother pressed the button and said, “Knife it is.”
