| Brothers I always protected my kid sister. It never mattered that we had different interests. Like that Samantha was everybody’s pick for baseball since she was old enough to pick up a bat. I loved English and history. Samantha hated both. She kept her distance from school. I knew she just couldn’t wait to get home and play. Did I mention she was amazing on a skate board and at climbing trees? A lot of kids thought she was weird, but they didn’t dare say anything bad around me. They knew I’d always protect her. Truth was if it had come to a fight, she would have had a better chance than me. Luckily it never got that far. I graduated a year before Samantha. We kept in close touch my first year away and I was glad I could still somehow protect my kid sister. I worried how she would do in the work world, but she was happier than she had ever been in school. She worked driving a UPS truck and seemed to like it. She even made a few close friends. I was glad, because as a pre-law student I was crazy busy. My sister and I mostly e-mailed and FB’d. When we saw each other at Christmas that first year of law school, I knew. She had changed, and not like I would have predicted. Her voice was deeper and she had facial hair. She didn’t need to say much and my only question was what name I should use. “Sam is just fine,” he said. He didn’t need more. Sam knew I would always protect my kid brother. |
