| I'm trying to better understand views. I can see the number of writing.com members that have viewed an item. But there are many more views. Where do they come from? How would someone, not a member, see my work and view it? When I check the stats, as others have pointed out, most of them come from an unknown source. But some come from writers.com shop, google, etc. I just can't figure out how they stumble upon this work. Thanks, Dave |
Looking up random stuff.

Essentially, any member of WDC can review any other member's work. There are some limitations involved. Items, including stories, can have access restrictions placed on them by the author. Example: one such restriction may be for Only Preferred Authors and higher, which is a level above your current Registered Author level. You would not be able to read/review that item. Other items may be unrestricted--any member might read and/or review. The author sets the access restriction, which determines who may read his/her work. There are literally hundreds of reviews done daily by WDC members. If you are unable to open an item you click on, the author has probably set that item at a level above your access. Also, if you can read an item, but cannot review it, the author has restricted review access. If an author's item is set to Make PUBLIC, allow EVERYONE!, then anyone (WDC member or not) can access and read that item. There are several entries under the REVIEW category in "Writing.Com 101" |
Good lesson, ruwth. |
| Yes. Thanks all. I do appreciate the answers. I think my main question was answered. I'm intrigued that the site shows 731 members but 25,608 guests. So, I'm assuming those guests represent the 98% of my views that are from "non-members". It sounds like these people are just random folks looking at the site but not actually signing up for an account. Thus, they can't actually review or interact with me. The decision point is this. Is it better for me to restrict my writing to members only? Less views but maybe more serious interactions. Or, leave it open to the public - more views but no real insight as to whether people are actually reading through the material. In any case - thanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate this forum. Dave |
Second, if you ever decide to publish some of your works, you might consider restricting those items. WDC is considered a peer-to-peer writing site--not a publishing site. But I've heard that some publishers don't want works that have been on other sites, including WDC. I personally leave a number of items unrestricted so family members and non-members can read to entice folks to read. |
| Thank you, Ja-Ja-JINX. Good insight. I can take a selective approach. Dave |
| Greets, There's currently a very large bot DDOS bot attack going on for about the last day or so. It's generating many thousands of fake concurrent users... I'd guess of the 25,000 at least 23k are just attacking the servers for no good reason. As has been discussed in this thread, setting restrictions to "Registered Users+" is one way to better ensure the views are coming from "humans" if that's something important... Best, ~~SM |
