We have a tower (group of) three female giraffes right now: Stella (14), Abby (9), and Bea (4). Stella and Abby are mother and daughter. I probably shouldn't say so, but Abby is my favorite - I've watched her grow up.
For years, I had to watch the giraffes from a distance. Even though I was a member, something that came with the privilege of feeding them, the way the exhibit was structured kept me from getting close to them in my wheelchair.
When COVID restrictions were finally lifted, I got a huge surprise - White the Zoo was closed, the exhibit had been remodeled, allowing me to feed them for the first time. A short metal gate was the only barrier between us, but I was never afraid, and neither were they. I was absolutely thrilled - Not then, nor ever have they been afraid of my chair. When Stella reached down and stripped the Acaicia branch I was holding, I felt her warm breath on my hand - In that moment, the world could have ended, and I would not have cared......
