I regret not advocating for myself while I was in college. I grew up with zero emotional support from my family, so I didn't have dreams or think I had many choices. I was an Italian major, and when my classmates started talking up their plans for their semester in Italy, I was gutted. I had no money and knew I'd never be able to go. Around the same time, I was offered a job in the university library where I was doing my work-study, so I dropped out of school and took the job. Knowing what I know now, I'm sure I could have gotten a scholarship to study abroad–I was at the top of my class and my professors had told me I had a gift for learning languages. My professors would have helped me if I'd talked to them. But asking for help didn't even cross my mind. Someday I'll make it to Italy.
