The net is like reality writ large. It's an opportunity to be more honest than you would dare in real life and a chance to lie through your teeth without payback. I am gullible enough to believe most folks online take the better opportunity, but aware that there are those who take the other route. As regards responsibility, I guess I'm fairly irresponsible in that I use the freedom from penalty to say more than I would normally. And I think (and hope) that the majority of people are the same. There have been a few that I've met who have completely pulled the wool over my eyes, but it's also highly probable that many more have done the same without ever being exposed. It's the reason why I don't like the idea of allowing people to see what you look like. It's terribly disappointing to find out that someone you "know" is vastly more ugly than you imagined. But I'm wandering off the point (and considering using these reflections as the subject of a blog post), mainly because I'm unsure what is meant by "responsibility." If it means taking the rap for one's actions in the online world, then no, of course our behaviour is affected. If there ain't no cat, naturally the mice will feel free enough to let their worst (and best) aspects be on display. What else is new? |
