Here we are again, nearing the end of another year. How has yours been? Did it bring you everything you wished for? Have you achieved everything that you had hoped to achieve?
I’ll be honest, mine hasn’t been the best. At the beginning of the year there was a bad storm that knocked out our power for several days. It was 7°C in the house (that’s 44.6°F) and just… not the best experience of my life. There have been a lot of health issues in my family. My sister-in-law passed away. My own health hasn’t been what one would hope for. I’ve felt uninspired when it comes to my writing, or anything creative. It’s been one of those years that I am glad to leave behind.
It hasn’t all been bad, however. I’ve written some nice items at the beginning of the year. The wildlife has been wonderful – lots of teeny tiny baby toads, hares and hedgehogs in my garden, plenty of pheasants, and my garden woodpecker brought its mate along. There were roaming sheep and I have petted several calves. My husband and I are slowly doing up the house. The Formula 1 season was actually reasonably interesting. I’ve got some wonderful new books. And on a spiritual level, whilst as always I am still searching and questioning, I’ve definitely prayed some more and felt more of an appreciation of the good, rather than merely get caught up in the bad.
I am not one of those people who is stoic or heroic in illness. I know people who have suffered greatly but never complained, still trying to do their best and be their best and keep a smile on their face. I’m afraid to say that that’s not me. When I feel ill I am a little rain cloud of doom and gloom. Nobody will ever call me brave for how I carry myself when I am ill. I’ll readily shed a tear when I need to have my bloodwork done! Still, whenever I feel miserable I look ahead, at all the things that I look forward to. Things that I want to experience. Because rain cloud or not, I’m not one to give up.
I already know that I face some things next year that I am not looking forward to. There will be medical tests that I absolutely dread. It’s all the more important, then, to find the good. To give myself something to get enthusiastic about. For example, the new Formula 1 season should be interesting because of all the changes, plus my favourite driver – Valtteri Bottas – is making his return after a year’s absence as an active driver. HBO’s adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms looks interesting. There’s a new season of Bridgerton. Hopefully, the new season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be out – yes, I am one of the people who actually enjoys it. We’ll get the house done. I’ll no doubt enjoy the wildlife again, and the lambs, and the calves. I’m planning on meeting the local alpacas and might make a trip to the coast. I will do my very best to let the good outweigh the less good.
Which is all we can try for, isn’t it? It’s not always in our hands, of course. Sometimes life just takes over and all we can do is try to survive the ride. As much as it is possible, though, whatever happens, we can look forward and find those spots of light that matter to us. Whether it’s looking forward to the next year, the next month, or even tomorrow, there’s bound to be a little spot of light.
A cat’s purr, a smiling child, the dog wagging its tail. The birds that visit the feeder. A beautiful sunrise, or sunset. Playing our favourite songs, watching a comfort show, or picking up a good book. Playing that beloved old game again. Picking up pen and paper and writing a poem, or a story, or working on that screenplay that’s been at the back of your mind. A stroll in the woods. Finding some silly memes. That first cuppa of the day…
Spots of light may be big or small. They may feel impossible to find, but they are out there. Sometimes we have to create them for ourselves. That’s how we discover that we, too, are spots of light – for ourselves and for others.
It’s nearly the end of the year, then, but not the end of things to look forward to – not by a long shot. There’s still so much to see, and do, and experience. Who knows what 2026 will bring?
So what are you looking to the most? I bet it’s something wonderful.
Until next year,
Kit
