Contest or Activity

Here on Writing.Com, a contest, as the name says, is always going to be a competition amongst the participants. Specifically, to be listed on "Writing Contests @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window., the contest has to be a writing competition. The entrants will have their work seen, possibly reviewed, graded, and compared to the other entries. The one that finds the most favor with the contest judge(s) gets first prize. Prizes can be anything that's contained within the site. Typically Gift points, Merit Badges, and Awards.
The official site contests have the highest gift point prize with a whopping 1 million gift points going to the first prize winner.

Contests are a great way to get egged on to leave ones own writing comfort zone and foray into new genres, try to write longer (or micro) fiction, or poetry. The way most contests are set up is that the writer is off the hook to do more right after submitting the complete entry.

Activities are a way more open in their definition. They are to be listed on this Plug Page: "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window..
Activities can revolve around a bunch of different things. Often, the topic will be writing. But there are also forums set up for chit-chat. There is a forum that helps members with daily accountability for self-chosen goals.
It's possible to have contests that aren't about writing. For instance, if someone creates a photography contest, it would go onto the Activities Plug Page.
Other typical activities are a variety of fundraisers. Raffles and Auctions are activities that are designed to collect gift points for groups, to pay for contest prizes, sometimes a member will run a fundraiser to get help with their membership renewal while having fun with it.

Taking part in activities is a great way to meet new people. The more open and interactive nature lends itself to get connected with other members on a more personal level.

BOTH Contest & Activities usually have a set of rules to follow. Read them, understand they apply to every participant including you. In case of questions, the best place to ask is the person who owns the contest or activity - unless otherwise noted.

What kind of contest or activity would you like to see on the site? Have you thought about hosting it?
