The Final Surprise

I’m not wrapping this in ribbons.
This should come as no surprise.
There’s no box of hidden contents
to indulge your greedy eyes.
No card of thoughtless meaning;
no fumbling with the ties.
This truth, now so revealing
after all your gifts of lies.

I’m not wrapping this in ribbons.
This present I will not give.
No token of my affection,
just disdain that now goes with.
No trophy for your conquest,
I no more believe the myth;
and free of your entwining
is the future I will live.

I’m not wrapping this in ribbons.
My truth is trimming free;
exposing your unravelling
and now surprising me.
Plain honesty is my comfort
and at last your gift I see.
I realise your true nature
and can finally be free.
