| Evie got up at dawn, hoping to catch her father before he left for work. Dressing hurriedly, she descended to stairs just as her father closed the door on his way out. Sighing, she decided to talk with her mother, maybe she could win her over. After all, Josie was her sister. Finding her mother in her sewing room, she greeted her with a kiss on her cheek. "Good morning, mother. Did you sleep well?" "As well as can be expected, considering your fathers' tirade about your relationship with Josie," was the cynical reply. "Mom! Can't you see how important this it to me? Evie wailed, plopping down next to her mother. "Now, Evie, you really cannot believe I would countermand your fathers' wishes, do you?" "I don't want to cause trouble, mom. I just want to see the house I designed and support Aunt Josie." Evie tried to temper her tone and at least sound reasonable. Laying down her mending, she said, "I know how much this means to you and to Josie. Maybe I can talk to your father and see if he will lrt you go for a short time." Evie sprang to her feet and gave her mother a big hug. "Oh, mom! Will you really?" Her mother smiled, "I will. Just do not be upset if he still refuses." Just then, Phoebe entered the room, "Refuses what?" "Never you mind, Miss Nosey!" Evie really did not want her sister talking about this situation to anyone. "Mom, I am going to the bookstore. We are going to start the inventory today." Evie got her coat from the hall tree and closed the door carefully. She had a little skip in her step as she walked to three blocks to the bookstore, imagining what the party would be like and who might be there. |
