A dwarf wizard uses his magic to save himself and finds true love. 300-word flash

Averting Disaster

Colby the dwarf, was climbing a mountain path; using a branch he’d found to assist him. He hummed a tune he’d heard last night in a tavern. The song was called “The Happy Wanderer.” He began to actually sing it.

This proved to be a huge mistake, as it caused a large stone to come rumbling down the mountain toward him! Being a powerful wizard, he thought quickly. A mound of straw soon covered him, and further magic deflected the rock, so it landed behind him.
“Well, that worked,” he muttered between sneezes. Since he was hale and hearty, it never occurred to him he might be allergic to straw. His nose swelled up and was so red he could light his way with it!

Feeling miserable, he stopped at a shelter he came across. His eyes were watering so much, his vision blurred, so he was startled to hear a female voice say: “Oh poor soul! Let me help!”
Colby let himself be led to a chair near the fire. She wiped his eyes and nose. When he could see again, he smiled at the female dwarf.
“Thank you, it’s just allergies I didn’t know I had,” Colby said.

“I have just the thing to help,” the woman said after introducing herself as Dulcie. The wizard introduced himself too and the pair took to talking as Dulcie prepared the remedy.
She made him inhale repeatedly from the warm mixture in the pot on the hearth. Soon his nose was normal and he’d stopped itching.
Knowing a good thing when he saw it, Colby escorted Dulcie on the rest of her journey. Surprisingly, it was back to his home. They married soon after and set up an apothecary that featured Dulcie’s own medicines and his magic as needed.
