The Fiery Thief
7 June 2006

Dawn stretched across the horizon, bringing light to what was left of Steve Chan and Marcy Ng’s burnt home. Just the night before, they were in bed, discussing what their future would be like. After several hours of slumber, they heard neighbours yelling: “Fire, fire! Get out of your house! Fire!”

Thinking it was a sick joke, Marcy went to the window with an intention to scold the neighbours for yelling in the middle of the night. From the window, she saw thick grey smoke filling her lungs and choking her.

“Steve… fire….” Marcy turned to her sleeping husband, wide eyed and startled.

Steve regained his composure quickly. He grabbed his wife and climbed outside the window, to a pipe leading to the ground floor.

In a haste panic, they only thought of saving themselves and not their belongings. They saw neighbours shouting and putting out the fire.

Hours later, Steve and Marcy knelt before their charred home, having lost the compass in their lives- their everything.

It was thus far they had struggled in life. Steve and Marcy had gone through objections in their marriage, ran away from home and start anew in an unknown land, only to see their home consumed by flames. The irony was, only their home was totally destroyed right to the ground while the other houses in the neighbourhood were partially saved from the fiery slaughter, although their lost were still great.

Did God really hate Steve and Marcy so much as to kill every hope they ever have had?

The couple were new to the neighbourhood and jobless. As the neighbours were mourning their lost, Steve and Marcy walked hand -in –hand, left the neighbourhood, their hair unkempt and their faces black with sooth. They became beggars.

Author's Note:

Thousand apologies. I've been such an idiot. Obviously, this is like my first time creating a book at Writing.com- well, besides my blog and another private item that only has one sentence written out. No wonder I couldn't find any static item ID anywhere. So much for my Writing.com common sense. Well done, Ely. *Pthb*
