Artists need a way to release themselves; to get going; to get the juices flowing. That's what I want this collection of journal entries to be: a place where I can say what I want without fear of retribution. I don't always feel like I have enough time to say what I want to say. I'll just have to try and be persistent and consistent.
Good Morning from Middle Tennessee! It is 59 degrees with slightly overcast skies. Today, I want to write about taxes. The word "tax" comes from the Latin word "taxo." Its root is the same as the word "taxatio," which means a rating or value or appraisal. Hmmm...makes sense. Taxes are monetary charges that governments impose on individuals. The concept of taxing income is a fairly modern innovation and presupposes many things: a money economy, reasonably accurate accounts, a common understanding of receipts, expenses, and profits, and an orderly society with reliable records. For most of the history civilizations, these preconditions did not exist, and taxes were based on other factors. Taxes on wealth, social position, and ownership of the means of production (typically land and slaves) were all common. Practices such as tithing, or an offering of first fruits, existed from ancient times, and can be regarded as the precursor to taxes. They lacked precision.
