October 18, 2018, 30DBC Prompt

Make a list, ten items long, you pick the subject.
Write something about that list that helps us understand why you chose those things.

Okay, I can do that.

#1 - Dale Earhnhardt Sr.
#2 - Gordon Downie
#3 - Gordy Howe
#4 - Adam Petty
#5 - Stevie Ray Vaughn
#6 - Buddy Holly
#7 - John Lennon
#8 - John Belushi
#9 - Robin Williams
#10 - John Bonham

You might have noticed I like to write from a humorous standpoint. So, what's funny about today's entry is... given the opportunity to take this prompt where ever I want, I chose to go to a sad dark place. Funny.

All the people on my list have a few things in common. They are all people whom I have never met. They are all people who meant something to me, and they are all people who have died, some in extremely tragic ways. They're all people who's death deeply moved me.

Yesterday (October 17) was the first anniversary of Gord Downie's death. Mr. Downie was the front-man for the band 'The Tragically Hip" He died of brain cancer at age 53.

So... This one goes out to the ones I love, the ones I knew, and the ones I never met. Maybe one day we'll all get together somewhere on some plain of existence. Until then, thank you. Rest in Peace.

October 17, 2018, 30DBC Prompt

Share a list of your top 5 favorite books and give us a short blurb on each.

My wife befriended a lady who lives nearby, while she was doing some shopping in town. This lady decided to drop by our house to visit, unannounced.

Side note... We live pretty much in a wooded area near a lake. A couple years ago I came up with this idea of putting a few rubber snakes around the perimeter of the house to see if they would scare off rodents. I think it worked. We don't have any rodent issues. So I figured... why not place a couple other rubber or plastic guardians around to scare off other unwanted pests, like ants, raccoons, spiders, skunks, etc. I figured nasty looking flying things like bats or really big bugs. So I added some of those to the security team. Then I thought, dinosaurs! I added 7 or 8 plastic dinosaurs. Nothing's going to challenge a T-Rex, right?

Anyhow this lady showed up at the door, and when Leslie (my wife) greeted her - the first thing she said was, "Oh my!You must have grandchildren."

Leslie said, "no."

The lady motioned to the plastic creatures and wondered out loud, I just thought because of the toys.

"Those are Joel's," Leslie tells her.

The lady looked at me and tilted her head; gave me a hard look.

The lady came inside and said to Leslie, "Oh you collect stuffed animals."

No, those are Joel's.

When the lady entered the living room and saw my bookcase adorned with several monkeys,(stuffed, plastic and handmade, one monkey is a hand puppet that flies) a few toys, and a collection of Dr. Seuss books she looked at me and said, "Yours right"

"Yep"

"Hmmm mmm ... i n t e r e s t i n g."

Let's just say that my favorite 5 books are not going to be found in the classic literature section of any bookstore or library.

You wouldn't think I was very well read unless I told you I was, which I am, but you wouldn't believe it, and I don't care.

I like to read the bible, old and new testament, including other religious books.
I like to read reference books. Encyclopedias and almanacs.
I'm looking at some of my books on the bookcase. I think I already said too much.

October 16, 2018, 30DBC Prompt

Share a list of your top 5 favorite songs and tell us why they’re your fave.

It would take me months to figure out which are my top 5 favorite songs. My list of favorite songs is so long it's scary.
I'd never be able to narrow it down to the top 5, besides, in a couple days it would change.
Here is my best offering to dutifully respond to today's blog prompt.

#1 My top favorite song is whichever new song I'm currently learning how to play on guitar. Right now that song is
'You Ain't Going Nowhere' - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

#2 My second favorite would probably be the previous song I learned to play, which would be 'I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing' - Aerosmith
Aerosmith is among my top 5 bands, which is also a very long list.

#3 My third favorite song might be the blues genre if I can say that. It doesn't matter. It's all good. I've been playing the harmonica now for 26 - 27 years. I've logged about a million hours of jamming along to the blues as performed by some of the legendary bluesmen (and blueswomen.)
Over the past year or two, I've been jamming to my favorite blues songs, while playing both guitar and harmonica, which has opened a whole new avenue of musical indulgence. A few days ago I discovered that I could play along with a favorite blues classic of mine.
'Smokestack Lightning' - Howlin' Wolf

#4 Pink Floyd is one of my favorite bands. If you don't like Pink Floyd, but you love poetry, try this... Just read the lyrics to any of their music. You might discover a new source of amazingly constructed poems.
'Wish You Were Here' - Pink Floyd

#5 I'll have to go with two of my favorite songs from my childhood 5 and 5a.

'Dominique' - The Singing Nun - One of my earliest childhood memories (I was 3 or 4 years old.)
Weekday mornings, after my older siblings left for school, this song would be played on the am radio station CJOB. I was compelled to put a red plastic bowl on my head and run around the coffee table as fast as I could while listening to this song at full volume.

'Aba Daba Honeymoon' - Debbie Reynolds - No wonder I ended up with a monkey for a muse.

Speaking of my monkey muse, Andre the Blog Monkey, I received a postcard from him. Shits about to get real!

October 14, 2018, 30DBC Prompt

Write a list of at least ten things that make you smile and why.

[Embed For Use By Upgraded+]

THINGS THAT MAKE ME SMILE AND WHY

*BurstBL* People who smile at me first. A smile is infectious - pass them around.

*BurstBL* Babies. Who doesn't smile when they see a baby?

*BurstBL* When my children or family members are enjoying themselves.

*BurstBL* Puppies and kittens. They're just so cute.

*BurstBL* Stupid people make me smile because it's not polite to laugh.

*BurstBL* Finding a golf ball. This is a new one I discovered this summer.

*BurstBL* Watching hockey. Seeing a player make a nice move or score a goal makes me smile.

*BurstBL* Getting back home after a long or troublesome day.

*BurstBL* Playing or listening to music. It's one of my favorite things to do.

*BurstBL* There are times when I'm just smiling involuntarily, and times when I smile just to get a reaction.

October 13, 2018, 30DBC Prompt: If you could have a/n [inter]national day to name and celebrate however you wished, what would you do?

Why can't I have a/n [inter]national day to name and celebrate however I wish?
If I can't have a/n [inter]national day to name and celebrate however I wish, then who can?
Where do these days come from?

I think everyone should be allowed to make their own National Day.
You know why they can't?
Not enough days to go around.
But don't worry; I'm not just going to point out a problem without also offering a solution.

How to make it so there is an unlimited number of days to go around.

I got this!

International Day of the Destruction of all Calendars, Clocks, and Devices Which Measure the Passage of Time.

A bit self-explanatory. *Think*

The day after this everyone will be able to have their own day. It can begin when they say it begins and will end when they say it's over. New days will begin and end all over the world on a more less random basis.

The best part about it... Nobody gets old.
Downside... 30 Day Blogging Challenge will have to change their name.
But don't worry; I'm not just going to point out a problem without also offering a solution.

Continual Yet Segmented Blogging Challenge

Thinking too much about this may be a waste of time.

October 12, 2018, 30DBC Prompt: October 12 is National Savings Day. What are some things you have saved up for? What would you save up for if you could?

When it comes to saving money I'm good at spending it. Thank God for the insufficient funds I invested in quite some time ago. My bank keeps sending me letters about how they are the only monies in my account at sometimes.

When there's something I want bad enough, I'll find a way of getting it, even if it means going in debt.

I've never had excessive amounts of money available to me. Spending it faster than I can make it might have something to do with that.

There have been times that I have saved up for a specific purchase. One of those specific purchases was a balsa wood model airplane with a rubber band powered engine, which actually flies. (assembly required) I was seven years old and the purchase price was $1.17. It took me weeks to save the exact amount. I'm planning to write more about this in a future project.

Leslie and I opened a joint saving account earlier in the year. I'm under strict orders to only make deposits. I think we're saving to buy a snowmobile; Leslie might have other plans. So this too may become a future story to write about.

As much as I'm trying to avoid doing something about Andre the Blog Monkey's Blogging Banana Bar being haunted by MOLLY MUGGINGSFUCKINGWORTH I guess I'll have to go over there and look into some form of a cleansing of the place. After all, They are my sponsor.

Enjoy the weekend.

October 10, 2018, 30DBC Prompt: Today is National Leif Erikson Day. What was the best adventure you ever had?

Leif Erickson was the first person I learned about from history, who I recognized as a real person, who actually lived in the past.

What struck me was... I learned that Leif was the son of Eric the Red, hence the name Erickson. (literally, Eric's son.)
So it occurred to me that Leif and I were the same, someone's son. Therefore, he, like me, had to be a real person.

Not like some dead president, scientist, or explorer who was probably just 'made up' like Santa Claus or Jesus.

Anyhow, [sigh] Good to see Leif get a National Day in his honor.

As for my best adventure, I don't think I've had it yet. I've had many adventurous journeys and experiences, but nothing really jumps out at me as being the best.

One of the best vacations I've taken, thus far, would be our trip to the East coast of Canada. I could say it was an adventure, but it wouldn't make for very interesting reading.

Not that anything I've written, thus far, can be considered interesting reading.

Yes, I would have to say that my most adventurous times are still ahead of me, and I'm off to discover them right now.

Have a great day!
