Haircut

The kitchen floor,
cold, hard and shining,
and her locks , golden red,
strewn like winnow in the wind,
randomly scattered,
around the template bowl,
stark evidence of a haircut,
home styled but free.

Sooner or Later

Procrastination,
though inevitably my resort,
leads ultimately to completion,
but promptness
yields both completion
and contentment.

True leisure
requires peace of mind.

Mourn

Wasting time in YouTube,
I was seduced by too many videos of home,
seduced and reduced to mourning
those narrow, shaded lanes,
damp roads promising rain later,
clouds playing in a laundered sky,
a thousand accents in the thronging streets,
and I am left bereft.

Massive

The French have a word for it;
a massif is a large raised plateau.
They have one called “le Massif Central”
(no prizes for any translations),
but the truly massive massif
is Africa - it being one enormous
plateau with edges nibbled
by erosion to a coastal plain.

Message in a Bottle

Set forth upon the waters,
adrift in a bubble of air,
our words issue forth,
seeking an ear
in the currents of the sea,
hear me, hear me,
in the bubbling hubbub,
an ocean of voices.

For Instance

Instant oatmeal, instant coffee,
instant gratification on the run,
instant reward for instant opus,
instant meal in instant making,
instant life in instant’s dreaming,
instant desire meets instant thought,
instant moments rattle on by
to end in instant insignificance.

Under

Under the spreading cedar tree
the shade of branches held aloft
speaks of shelter cool and dim
in warmer climes of brightest noon.

Acacia thorns and toughened green
hold the pulsing midday heat
in broiling sway beneath blue skies
horizon storms hail the end of thirst.

From the ‘Tache

Would it be brash
to make a dash
to raise the cash
to buy the mash
for corned beef hash?
It seems too flash
to make a splash
and risk a clash.

Bat photo upside down.

Stab

In Heavy School one day
two students had their say
“So, d’you like it?” asked the one
“Not me I’m nearly done,”
came answer from the other,
“Goin’ back home to mother.
These furry pants do itch,
and square shoulders are a bitch.”

“I can see you’ve had enough,
but it makes you look so tough.”

Bats hanging in a tree.

Bats

“Come here often?”
“My favourite hangout.”
”Why’s that then?”
“People hold together here,
similar point of view.
Don’t like it? Drop out.
No one calls you batty.”

“I could fall for that.”
