Rocket Science That there boy’s so lazy, just one thing will get him goin’ and that’s my pappy’s remedy for all those that be ailin’ so. Light a fire underneath his butt, guaranteed to get him movin’, never seen him run so fast, same principle as rocket science. Meander The river is a living thing, looping like a snake; it slides off the slip-off slope and makes a cut-off bank, so writhing across the plain, ever changing and inconstant, mocking our attempts to use it as a bound’ry. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 02.14.22 Prompt: Slope, boundary. Note: The use of the Mississippi as a boundary between states has led to some odd anomalies as the river has changed its course over the years. Tiny slices of one state now find themselves on the wrong side of the river, making a complete nonsense of cartographers’ drawing of lines. |
Log of the Rover Opportunity Imagine the loneliness of me, cast upon the arid sands of Mars to wander, a friendless spider, across the scorching waste always seeking moisture, sampling dirt and dust, fruitless, ever obedient to my orders. I welcome the final storm. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 02.13.22 Prompt: Mars Rover Concludes 15-year Mission. |
Who Needs Nobel? The memory of Darwin, evolving with the ages, speaks too of those who star in the award for less than sages. So here’s to those who volunteer to keep the gene pool pure; the Darwin Award from all their peers will be their prize for sure. Supermarket Warrior You served me well, you, with your constant desire to turn left, one wheel twirling uselessly, while the others squeaked in approval. Caged no more, in a watery grave you lie. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 02.11.22 Prompt: The Stray Shopping Carts of Eastern North America: A Guide to Field Identification by Julian Montague. |
Slough The serpent in molt, casting his former life to the wind, and careless of his ruffian past, repeats his crimes in rebirth, having learned nothing. His cast, silvered and transparent, bears no witness to his deeds, returning to the dust. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 02.10.22 Prompt: Molt. Note: ‘Slough,” in this context, is pronounced “sluff.” English does love the “gh” ending. |
Jellyfish The jelly fish is a smelly fish, when cast upon the shore. Don’t put it in your bellyfish, you won’t be wanting more. But, if you see them in the sea, diaphanous and bright, beware their streamers floating free,, those strings can really bite! Line count: 8 Rhymed abab For Express It In Eight, 02.09.22 Prompt: Jellyfish. |
Moonshine How bright the nightly moon doth wax! It guides us so into our tracks, the poet sings of silvered nights, the lover claims romantic rights, the spaceman fares from here to there, the farmer tells the time of year, and, strange to tell, the lunatic is led to speak in terms emphatic. Line count: 8 Rhymed aabb For Express It In Eight, 02.07.22 Prompt: Lunatic. |
Fields of Concrete The man of the city, so wistful of the time his ancestors tilled the hard earth and sang songs of the seasons, has no past and sings no songs, tills only plastic and paper in the dreams of others.
