Horror does not have to be gory or supernatural. I recall one of the most terrifying scenes I've ever read was in Stephen King's "The Running Man", when the main character, trying to escape a burning building, gets himself hopelessly stuck in a sewage pipe. Arms pinned to his sides, there appeared no way to go forward or backward. In my opinion, that is the best kind of horror... Something that triggers a primal fear response in the reader. The best horror is also frequently suspenseful, and works best not in what it shows, but what it doesn't. Nothing the author creates can be as terrifying as what the reader imagines is making those vile noises down some dark corridor. Its the same reason the best horror films seldom show the monster in all its glory until the very end, because it can never be as scary as the viewer imagined.
