I stumbled on this yesterday and it reminded me of this thread http://www.stevelaube.com/changes-in-culture/ When you talk about slang having the potential to date a story, you've got a great point. But this takes it a step further, talking about things that today's 18-year-old won't even remember compared to someone only 15 years older who may be trying to write about them. This is another list that you'd have be careful of if you didn't want to date your story. But, for instance, if your MC is starting college in the year 2010, they didn't watch the original airings of Rainbow Bright or Scooby Doo growing up. I thought this said a lot about 'talking younger'. I would suspect that nearly half the cultural things I remember from my childhood didn't even exist when Lorien was the same age. And I have to know that if I write from the perspective of a teenager. To me, the only kids that had pagers were drug dealers in high school, and now a large portion of 10-year-olds have cell phones. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |
