Still mussing and fussing over her new costume, the lovely 10 year old Erica exits the curtained changing booth looking precious in her ballerina costume. A simple armless white tight-fitting leotard with spaghetti-straps, a practically transparent tu-tu (also white-tinged), and ballet-slippers with light pinkish leggings that come up to her knees, she is an adorable dream to see.
Timidly, Erica creeps through the creaky door into a dark hall. She guesses she must be below or behind the rest of the carnival now, as the usual sounds of the rides, and random kids' screams and laughter, and all the other happy sounds seem murky and faraway.
Though her slim, flawless legs shiver from nervousness, Erica creeps on down the hall, trying doors. While her tight slippers make hardly a sound, the wooden floor creaks in places, and she whispers in her tiny voice for her brothers, like-aged Richard and older stepbrother Paul.
Whatever the case, it sounds to Erica like she's getting closer - not further away from - the carnival sounds outside, and that's where she wants to be. The sooner out of this weird side-attraction they got dumped into, the better.
