A Journal to impart knowledge and facts
July 22, 2015

I'm going to start today to record on a daily basis whatever happens to strike my fancy. So, it is a very cool breezy day. I just posted 5 short book reviews to The Monthly Reading Challenge. I'm suppose to put away some winter wood today from the woodpile outside but I'm playing hookey from work to write so starting this blog will get done.

I'm having a daily fight with a flock of English Sparrows that are trying to take over my barn. They are making a terrible mess so they have to go. I have destroyed several nests so far they don't leave but they get out of the barn when I am around. I'm just starting the fight so I guess I don't know how far I have to go to discourage them.

I'm trying not to spread myself to thin on WDC because I find so many things that are interesting here and I am trying to work on a new story. I really enjoy sitting at my desk with a cup of tea and reading blogs on WDC.

You and several friends are marooned on a desert island. Everyone is looking to you to lead. What are your first actions? (List at least 2 please) will award a MB for his favorite entry today. *ThumbsUpL*

owl for signature use For every Book of Job, there's a Book of Leviticus, featuring some of the most boring prose ever written. But if you were stranded on a desert island, what book would better reward long study? And has there ever been a more beautiful distillation of existential philosophy than the Book of Ecclesiastes? 1. Take an account of everyone's talents and knowledge: This has to take in account health, abilities, and emotional stability, because of however we ended up there.

2. Look for shelter, sources of food, and water: If it's necessary we may have to build shelter.

3. Questions I'm asking:
Is there foliage? Are there trees? How big is the Island? Is there just sand? There are seven oceans: which one are we in?
What brought us here: pirates, plane crash, or a boat wreak? Were we picked up and dropped by the whirling winds of a tornado? Were we dropped by a magical ship? Will it return for us?

4. We have to find ways for recreation early in the time we are marooned. Minds busy with things they like are more inclined to stay for the duration of the imprisoning.

5. So, do we have baseballs can we make bats or balls from the surrounding environment. Do we have working technology. Can we build solar electricity to keep the tech charged.

6. Is the Island a good place to build a palace to live in permanently, even if we find a way to become not marooned. Maybe we would like to come back some time for a vacation. *Laugh*

See Ya! Maybe we can grow wings and fly home. Are we sure we want to go home? Maybe we should build a new and better society. *Bird*.

What was the biggest news in your life from last year?

owl for signature use *News*

There was not very much change here. This fall I brought a new kitten into the house. The kitten was neutered and had all her shots, by the time real cold set in. That was big enough so I knew I would not be doing visits to the Veterinarian during the winter, when roads can be bad.

A plus is how well the older cat we have and the kitten are getting along. The older cat was rather sedentary, but now, she plays like a little kitten and the two of them work mischief together. It's nice. Another plus, my dog sometimes gets involved, when the kitten chases him or he chases her. All in fun no fighting. Keeps the household joyful and companionable.

Write about a time you learned something new. Use and highlight at least 3 words in your entry that are not part of your normal vocabulary and provide your readers with definitions for those words.

“Dance is the hidden language of the soul.”

For me, this is not a piddling (means insignificant or small) request. Which, time should I write about? I learn something new every month.

Years ago, I took one semester of Spanish in a college class. It was a discouraging class. We had to use a lab with ear phones. It was before Logitech. There were large speaker type machines attached to the earphones and everything that came out was garbled. After a few days of labs the teacher asked the whole class how many were having trouble understanding the sounds coming from the ear phones every hand went up. It never did get straight.

When I bought my first Kindle Fire I found Duolingo. Duolingo is an app that helps you learn languages for free. For me it was bane (this means annoying or able to cause you trouble). Because, while I still like and use this website it often could not pick up my voice from my head set. Other students had trouble they reported as well. On the other hand, I learned a lot of Spanish words on Duolingo simply, because of the rote memory lessons so, it is not a loss.

I also found and downloaded a group of language lessons for Spanish on the web that are in my music library. I use them to learn how to learn a language. The lessons explain how to add endings to words and pronounce words that become Spanish from the English version of the word. It was a fortuitous (fortuitous means random, by accident) find. I don't speak Spanish but, *Laugh* I can now read the Spanish directions that come with any new appliance or other purchase.

Quote:
“ Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things.” – ..

I will continue to study Spanish and how to learn languages. Everything I do is on a low budget and I'm not against the real meaning of the word free. Now, I have the app "Drop" on my phone. I found it on Google. It is a fun and interesting way to study language.

Highschoolers graduating this year, in May 2019, are as old as the first iPod. Make a prediction for how technology will advance in the next 18 years.

Animals have come to mean so much in our lives. We live in a fragmented and disconnected culture. Politics are ugly, religion is struggling, technology is stressful, and the economy is unfortunate. What's one thing that we have in our lives that we can depend on? A dog or a cat loving us unconditionally, every day, very faithfully. Jon Katz

The first 30 years of a new century bring about a lot of new advancements. Nothing seems to just stay the same day by day.

I don't know about prediction. Seriously, if you want a change you have to look at things in a different way than a crowd might.
If the crowd is running south. Turn around and run North. Or, veer off and run south West.

Probably the new super computer will be small enough to fit in your pocket. Education will be more wide spread as long as the information age keeps expanding.

In that view, WiFi will become easier and cheaper for everyone. I hope to see the day when rural people have WiFi hookups with the ability to use any amount of tech products they need.

Surveillance of homes will be easier and will affect crime in lots of ways.New types of surveillance, policing techniques, and online education will become more respected so, a drop in some types of crime can be expected. New policing techniques will help catch and identify criminals faster.

Robotic cleaning of homes will be a rage soon. Which, I hope will drop prices of Irobots and other types of floor robots.

Homes are going to see a rise in electricity type heating. Companies that supply electricity are going to continue to invest in solar and wind energy.

Small solar panels that hook up easily are going to come on the market and be really cheap. You will be able to take them with you anywhere to run your computers, kindles, and phones.

More wide spread electric automobiles.

Maybe robots will deliver mail and packages.

It may take time but I think medicine and health is going to go through an overhaul. More walking and biking trails may help a social change as people begin to communicate face to face and one on one.

Fewer dogs will be available as shelters get the over populations under control.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? How do you recharge your batteries?

Quotes: Reference: http://wisdomquotes.com/introvert-quotes/

Extroverts sparkle, introverts glow. Extroverts are fireworks, introverts are a fire in the hearth. Sophia Dembling

Be a loner. That gives you time to wonder, to search for the truth. Have holy curiosity. Make your life worth living. Albert Einstein

I'm an introvert. I was an introvert before people made this word mean something. On the other hand I've always enjoyed family and church get togethers because it is an opportunity to listen to conversations and learn about the lives of more extroverted people.

I' m reading True Places by Sonja Yoerg. It's a story about a little girl found in the woods, who has been living there for 16 years and does not understand society as it exists today. It's environmental but, I see a lot of introverted experiences as the characters reveal themselves.

Over the years, I have used lots of different ways to recharge. As a young girl I had a part Shepard part collie dog that was given to me by my brother. I would take long walks with this dog across the neighboring fields and woods. I also think purring cats is a sound that soothes the soul. In earlier years, I also liked to take a horse back ride over fields, woods, and roads. Wandering on horse back can be soothing, adventuresome, and exercises the body as well as the mind. Exercise helps me sleep and a good sleep recharges batteries. Now, I do mindfulness, yoga, walk my dog, read a good story, write something, play with the cat or play music. These are things I do to relax and enjoy day time hours.

In this frame of mind I found a new App on Goggle for my phone. It's called Eye Care Plus. It is easy to use. There are exercises for your eyes which rest them and if used a few minutes a day helps them stay healthy.

Happy Trails!

I’m 24 today! Write about your most memorable birthday. My favorite entry (or entries ) today will receive a Birthday MB!

Quotes:
"The bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is its engine." ~ John Howard
"I thought of that while riding my bicycle." ~ Albert Einstein in reference to the Theory of Relativity.

Red Dragon

My dad gave me a brand new Schwinn bicycle for my birthday, when I was a child. I spent my days riding it up and down the road in front of our house for years. It was my imaginary horse before horses came into my life. How old was I? Maybe I was 8 to 10 years old. I don’t really remember. I was still riding it when I was a teenager. I always took care of it and appreciated it. I had to stop riding it when one of my cousins removed the wheels and sold them. Today I ride a Walmart special, that K bought for me.

The Schwinn Company was founded in 1895 by Ignaz Schwinn with Adolph Arnold as his financial backer. The company still makes quality bikes with innovative designs. You can find the companies website online. The Company began in Chicago, Illinois and now is known all over the world. Although, the price of a Schwinn is high the bikes are known for their long lives. On the web Schwinn calls itself America’s most famous bicycle brand. When the company was first formed bikes were the rage. They caused a lot of changes in the country. Women's clothing was modified so they could ride bikes comfortably.

Because I remembered, I went out and bought Schwinn bicycles for my three sons, in the 1980's. I still have one of them in my barn (son’s bicycle) and I rode it for awhile. Schwinn bicycles are the best. They were made with real metals that don’t rust. I don't know if they still are or not. The brand name must count.

Automobiles came along and then the bicycle took a backseat to the Ford. But, even today, you never forget your first bicycle.

What is your opinion of New Year’s Resolutions? Do you make them? Do you keep them?

Quote:“Just because the dates change, does not mean you have to change. The continuous path towards self-improvement is a timeless process.”
― Brittany Burgunder

Personally, I don't worry about New Year's Resolutions as a way to attempt to stick to a motivation. Although, I think it can be a way to set yourself on a path to a new learning experience. I love to learn new information or achieve a new physical skill.

Throughout any given piece of a year I might attempt to learn something new. One year I was into dancing steps so I learned some hip hop, ballet, and other steps. I don't use the steps much but, it led me to yoga which I use a lot.

I learned to crochet about 40 years ago. Last year, I tore an older afghan apart built some new motifs for it, and then went to the app store on my kindle to get a"stitch counter" app and a " How to crochet" app which taught me a new stitch about putting together the old and new motifs into a bigger and better afghan.

I also have the failures I can remember. I started on a path twice so far to learn Spanish. Each time I get started I progress. The last time I tried, I learned more about how to learn a language, than actually learning Spanish. I also learned, that one of the draw backs to completing language learning is, if you are isolated and don't have a partner to speak the language with, it"s a bit intimidating.

From a psychological and sociological point of view, tiredness and stress can interfere with completing resolutions. Posting your resolution in a place where you remind yourself of the goal may help keep you moving toward achievement. Or, setting an alarm to go off at a special time may force the achievement to move forward. Rewarding yourself with a good feeling every-time you complete a lesson, or read a page in that book, or try a new recipe even if it flopped, will move you toward the goal. Be goal oriented. Repeat like the "The Little Train That Could" I can do it.

If you fail, it really isn't a failure. You tried. Try again. Approach the goal from a different type of emotion. Try again.

Writing is especially a place that needs experience of all kinds in order to write items that will be found informative or entertaining to readers. One of the items a writer looks at is the audience they are trying to please. What does that audience look for as they decide to read an article?

Actors often go out and work a job that they are going to play on stage or in a film. Experience is important.

Research is important. Research the subject, that is about your resolution. Research will help you stick to your resolution because you will know more about the subject, whatever it is: quit smoking, dieting, yoga, mindfulness, research makes the journey smoother.

I think, if you set a resolution and stick to it even if it begins to seem irrelevant, you may not reap the rewards of the new learning experience at once. However, down the road of life, when you are stuffed full of knowledge, you may be dancing with happiness that some of those goals you set worked.
