Where in the world would you like to visit the most? Assume you are not worried about money in any way. While you're traveling, give me a status update on January so far. Smooth sailing, or turbulence?/c}

Status Update

It's been an exciting and stressful January, which isn't unusual. January, and the beginning of the Gregorian year, is always either exciting or stressful, but normally not both simultaneously. I think the problem this year was the move from the two-bedroom to the one-bedroom apartment. Encountering mice in the "new to me" apartment didn't help the stress. In December we caught 9 mice in the sticky glue traps, so far this month we've caught 9 more. I'm sure there are more because I hear weird and unidentifiable noises at night.

Travel Destinations

The only places I want to visit are the Baha'i Temples   across the world and the Baha'i Holy Places   on and near Mount Carmel in Haifa, Israel. The Mashriqu’l-Adhkars, Arabic phrase meaning “The Dawning Place of the Mention of God"3. The Temples are Wilmette (United States) Santiago (Chili) Panama City (Panama), Kampala (Uganda), Langenhain (Germany), Sydney (Australia), Apia (Western Samoa), and New Delhi (India).

“We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.” -Ernest Hemingway
What are your thoughts on this quote by a writer many consider a master? Who are some other writers you admire or consider masters?

An Apprentice in the Craft

All living authors are apprentices in their craft because they are still practicing and learning. As long as an author keeps writing, that author is till learning through research, observation, and contemplation on humanity or their latest project. Only after an author passes on to the spiritual plan can the person's writing be judged to determine if that individual was a master of the craft.

Who do I consider masters of the craft? The author who wrote in English, and whose works I can read without worrying about the quality of the translations, are Arthur C. Clark, Isaac Asimov, Edgar Allan Poe, and H.P. Lovecraft to name a few. There are other authors, such as the Babi poet Tahirih, whose translated works I have read. Tahirih was a master of the craft of mystic poetry. Since I cannot read either Arabic or Persian--her native languages--I have to read the translations of her poetry, which means I have to consider the quality of the translations, and most of those are good.

DAY 2248: There are things known and things unknown and in between are the doors. Jim Morrison
Let this quote inspire your blog entry.

The Mighty Door

The Word of God is the Mighty Door
giving both the seeker and the believer
access to the knowledge, wisdom, and mysteries of the universe.

I had an epiphany last night when I was reading a prayer for forgiveness, which was revealed by The Bab. The last sentence of the prayer says: "Thou art the Sovereign Ruler, the Mighty Door, the Exalted, the All-Loving."4 The Holy Spirit is the revealer of the Word of God through The Bab, Baha'u'llah, Christ, Mohammad, and others. In order for humanity to unlock the mysteries of the universe is through prayer and meditation on the sacred scriptures. In order to discover the mysteries, I need to meditate on the writings of The Bab and Baha'u'llah.

Day 1855: “Anytime you get two people in a room, who disagree about anything, the time the day, there is a scene to be written. That’s what I look for.” Aaron Sorkin
Does a situation like what Aaron Sorkin describes upset you or do you take it as a chance to write it in a scene or a story? For that matter, can you think of similar negative situations you have used or plan to use in your writing?

Disagreements

There is nothing wrong with disagreements. The problem comes in when individuals are so emotionally attached to their opinion that they do not want to listen to what the other person has to say. People can disagree without arguing, shouting, and curing each other out. When a disagreement occurs the best way to resolve it is to calmly listen what the other person believes and why. After listening to each other, they need to come to a conclusion about what to do, and how to go about solving their problem. If, at anytime, the discussion descends into an emotional argument about who is right or wrong, the people involved need to agree to disagree before going about their business or going their separate ways.

Open your local paper or browse online for a news story headline that grabs your attention and share it with us. Try to venture outside your comfort zone and read a story you wouldn’t normally read or even one from another country!

The article I found most interesting and scary was James Watson: Scientist loses titles after claims over race   on the BBC News   home page. I find it scary because there are people who will agree with, and use, Dr. Watson's "unsubstantiated and reckless"5 views as gospel. While genetics does play a roll in intelligence, it is not the cause of any differences intelligence between blacks and whites on IQ tests. The difference are caused by other factors that have little or nothing to do with genetics or skin color.

Dr. Watson did a great service for humanity in 1953, when he assisted--Maurice Wilkins and Francis Crick--in discovering the double helix structure of DNA. However, Dr. Watson does a great disservice to the human race by holding to outdated and narrow views of skin color as being a determinant in intelligence. Since 1953 several new discoveries about DNA have proved that humanity is a single species. Two of these examples are those about mitochondrial6 and y-chromosone7 DNA. Both of these discoveries suggest that humans today are descended from two individuals who probably lived in Africa. New discoveries push back the date of our common ancestors, and some show that there is Neanderthal DNA in some of us.

As for skin color, that is the results of our ancestors migration out of Africa. In colder climates a lighter skin tone assisted our ancestors to survive. Humanity is a single species, which had physically adapted to the various climate across the planet. This adaption is revealed in our genetic code, which holds the key to our future adaption and medical discoveries that will help the race survive.

Besides the craft of writing, are you an artist in any other medium? Sculptor, singer, dancer, painter?

No Other Artistic Medium

Unless I'm in the shower,
singing isn't my cup of coffee;
I'm tone deaf,

I could be a world class procrastinator,

Attic Adventures

An attic,
even an empty attic,
is a spicy room
for your muse.

the temptation of entering
because you will find all sorts
of intriguing,
frightening,
and disgrace
things concealed
in the cracks and crevices
of an attic
floor or wall.

Don't let rumors
of a haunted attic
defraud you
from the adventure of
finding a nineteenth century steamer trunk
from a boat across the Atlantic or Pacific,
a train across the country,
or a square of silk

Tell us the story of your name. How and why was it chosen? You can choose to talk about your real name, your WDC username, or even your handle if you like! *Smile*

I have written about how I chose my handle several times. After contemplating this entry (all night), I decided to post two of the poems I wrote about my handle. I decided to use the meanings of my middle and first names because I always wanted a nickname and never had one. I wanted something that was personal to me, and thought that the meanings of Florence and Neva would do just fine. In addition, at the time I joined writing.com I was a bit shy about using my real name. I added the "Globe" this past December and have decided to keep it for a few more months, at least.

Secretly,
I know my name
is Prosperous Snow.

Snow
raindrops frozen
in their descent through to earth.

Prosperous
my soul’s inner reality.

My real name is Neva Florence. I was named after an aunt, one of my Father's sisters, and my maternal grandmother--whose middle name was Florence. I never knew my Aunt Neva because she drowned before I was born. I like both Neva and Florence, as well as Prosperous Snow.

Secretly, I know my name is Prosperous Snow.
The meaning of my middle and my first name.
It sounds better and makes more sense this way
Than Snow Prosperous.

Snow the unique results of raindrops frozen,
Prosperous an ability of my soul.
These are my secret names;
This is my inner reality.

Prosperous Snow the names my mind gives to my soul.
The name I use in addressing my true self.
The name written on my spirit's journal.

Tell us about the pet you had for the longest amount of time or the one that made the most significant impact on you. If you have never had a pet (I’m sorry), what pet would you want?

I don't have any pets, or my own, at the moment. That doesn't mean I won't have any in the near or far future because I have learned that events, people, and animals in a person's life changes. I don't plan on having any more pets, but that doesn't mean I won't, because I refuse to tempt fate by saying "Never again."

Throughout most of my life I've had dog, cats, and both at the same time. I've written several short poem about "Cats I Have Known (19 short poems) and "Dogs and Cats I Have Known. There other other poem in my portfolio about the animals that have been in my life. Right now I have two teddy bears (Do Teddy Bears count as pets?) called Christmas and Christmas Eve. Several of my neighbors have dogs, which wag their tails when they see me.

"Skeezix, the dog I remember fondest, was actually my grandparents' dog. His mother, Patsy, was the dog that belonged to my siblings and me. I have fond memories of Patsy, but her son is the dog that made the biggest impression on me. Maybe it was because he would let me hide in his dog house, inside the garage, until Grandpa caught me and stopped me because he though Skeezix had fleas. I don't remember ever getting fleas from Skeezix

How is your online persona different from your real world persona? How much attention do you pay to your personal privacy when communicating with others online?

I'm not sure there is much of a difference between my online persona and my "real world" persona. Most of my online social life revolves around writing.com, and staying in touch with family and friends through Facebook. My "real world" social life revolves around spiritual services at the Las Vegas Baha'i Center, doctors' appointments, and talking to my sister and/or other people on the phone. If I had an easier way to get around--I take the paratranset bus--I'd probably go out more.

DAY 1849: “I am still committed to the idea that the ability to think for one’s self depends upon one’s mastery of the language.” Joan Didion, Slouching Toward Bethlehem: Essays What are your thoughts on this subject?

Mastery of language is important, but it isn't as important as asking questions about their own learned prejudices, dogma, and preconceived opinions. A person can master the language without having to ask the important questions about their opinions and the opinions of others inside and outside of their social circle. Human beings were created to use their minds, rather then accept--without question--the opinions of others. Knowing how to use the language helps in phrasing a logical and precise question; however, the biggest help in asking questions is overcoming fear that the question will give an unwanted answer.

DAY 2242: “There is a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt.” ― Erma Bombeck What do you think?

The line is thin, and sometimes it is completely invisible. I believe, the main reason for this is because we're human, and most of our emotional reactions are based our own perceptions and personal experience. Each individual human being see the world through their own experiences and learning. Human beings base their perception of reality on personal experience and on instructions they receive as they mature.

DAY 1848: Psychologists claim that some people feel they don’t deserve to be happy. Why do you think this is and what may be the reason or reasons some people feel this way to undermine their own happiness?

Happiness

Everyone deserves to be happy. Each individual has their own reasons for being either happy or unhappy, so I can't say why someone else would think they didn't deserve happiness. One problem may be the duality of human nature, since human beings have both a physical body and a spiritual soul, we have two natures. The ego, which is part of the physical, and the soul/spirit, which goes beyond the physical nature into the spiritual realm. Happiness is a spiritual attribute that comes from the soul and is part of the spiritual nature of the human being. Unhappiness is part of the physical nature because the ego doesn't find joy in anything except feeding its passions and desires.

God! Refresh and gladden my spirit. Purify my heart. Illumine my powers. I lay all my affairs in Thy hand. Thou art my Guide and my Refuge. I will no longer be sorrowful and grieved; I will be a happy and joyful being. O God! I will no longer be full of anxiety, nor will I let trouble harass me. I will not dwell on the unpleasant things of life.

O God! Thou art more friend to me than I am to myself. I dedicate myself to Thee, O Lord.
‘Abdu’l-Bahá89

Whenever I am unhappy, I recite or read the above prayer reveal by 'Abdu'l-Baha, and my mood changes. My mood changes because I have placed any situation that is making me unhappy in God's hands. The things I like about this prayer is its emphasize on being the joyful and happy. Human beings will always be unhappy if they focus exclusively on their material/physical natures. However, focusing on God--by whatever name the Unknowable Creator is called--will bring happiness.

You and several friends are marooned on a desert island. Everyone is looking to you to lead. What are your first actions? (List at least 2 please)

First Actions

*BulletBr* Demand a recount.
*BulletGr* Find out if anyone has any phobias. It helps to know who's going to go screaming into the ocean if they see a spider or a spider monkey.
*BulletO* Find out if anyone has any allergies. I don't want anyone dying because the cook put coconut in the serpent stew that was eaten for lunch or dinner.
*BulletP* Find out who's on medication and how much medication is left. I need to know if they're going to run out of meds before we're rescued.
*BulletB* Find out if anyone is experienced at cooking from scratch. Since there are no cans or can openers on a desert island, we need someone who can cook a snake or a fish, after we figure out how to remove the skin or the scales.

What was the biggest news in your life from last year?

The big news, in my personal life, from 2018 is the move from a 2-bedroom apartment to a 1-bedroom, followed by finding 9 mice in the new "to me" apartment. I'm settling in, going through hard copies of poems, and finding all sorts of things I forgot about. I'm transposing the poems to "Poem Experiments, "Devotional Poetry, and "Memories of Snow. I'm attempting to get back into my writing and reviewing routine. Moving, and all the stress associated with it, has cause a slight problem is writer's block.

Throughout most of December, with the exception of the days I was without internet, I managed to post a gratitude list in "Writing in Snow. On the days I didn't have an internet connection, I made a list in a pen and paper journal, I decided not to post those. Instead I started out fresh when the internet was restored. There wasn't any other stressful or spectacular news from 2018.

DAY 2239 Prompt: January 5 is National Bird Day. Do you have a favorite bird? If so, what is it? Why is it your favorite? If you don't have a favorite bird, tell us about the birds in your area of the country or world.

The Nightingale and The Dove

I have two favorite birds, the nightingale and the dove because they are spiritual symbols. In the Old Testament, His Holiness Noah released a white dove to determine if the floodwaters had subsided. In the New Testament, a white dove--symbolizing the descent of the Holy Spirit--descended from heaven when John the Baptist baptized His Holiness Jesus Christ. Nightingales were in the Najibiyyih Garden10 in Baghad, in the spring of 1863, when His Holiness Baha'u'llah declared His mission to His family and followers. In some of His Tables and revealed works, Baha'u'llah refers to both the Nightingale and the Dove.

I bear witness that thou hast hearkened unto the melody of God and His sweet accents, inclined thine ear to the cooing of the Dove of divine Revelation and hast heard the Nightingale of fidelity pouring forth its notes upon the Branch of Glory: Verily there is none other God but Me, the Incomparable, the All-Informed.

In the 1930s, Shoghi Effendi13, the grandson of 'Abdu'l-Baha14, predicted, what we now call, the worldwide web or internet. The worldwide web, which is still in its infancy, has the potential of uniting the entire planet. The Web, like humanity, is experiencing growing pains. Like a human infant, it has the potential to do both good and bad, the potential for both unity and disunity. I believe its potential for doing good and unifying humanity outweighs its potential for evil and disunity. Over the next few decade both the web and humanity will mature beyond its present form.

The problems the internet and humanity are experiencing today concerns the selfishness of leaders in every country who do not comprehend that their security and wealth depends on their cooperation with other countries. When you look at the Earth from space, you see a single planet with mountain, rivers, valleys, and cities. With rare exceptions, the boundaries you see are natural barriers--such a mountains and rivers. However, when you look on a glob or human-made map of Earth see the artificial boundaries indicating nation-states.

Once the majority of the human race realizes the interconnectedness of the planet's climates and the human species itself, the internet will reveal its potential of good in uniting the communications systems of the planet. If we continue to look at the present condition of the planet, and certain aspects of the internet, we will become discouraged and terrified for the survival of humanity. At present, many are still focused on the dogma and superstitions of the past that segregated humanity into color, religion, nation, etc. We have to raise our eyes and minds from their present focus and see Earth as it is viewed from the moon or the international space station.

I am not going to attempt to predict what the Worldwide Web or technology will be like in eighteen or eighty-one years. Because no matter what I predict, it will have changed beyond anything I can guess. Only God and His Prophet-Manifestations know precisely what will happen over the next few decades of the twenty-first century. Some of the changes have been revealed to us because we have the duty to help bring them to fruition. Some have been concealed from us because of God's love for humanity.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? How do you recharge your batteries?

Introvert or Extrovert

Am I an introvert or an extrovert? I enjoy socializing in small crowds with people I have something in common with. I enjoy taking to stranger when riding the bus or going to a entertainment event or movie. I enjoy large crowds when I'm having fun. I don't like large crowds when I stop having fun. I socialize with whichever hairdresser is cutting my hair at Supercuts, and I enjoy talking to the manager at Supercuts. I enjoy talking to the customers. I just don't like being in crowds when I'm not having fun or socializing withe people.

How do I recharge my batteries? Writing poetry, reading, prayer, meditation, getting my hair cut once a month, and socializing with people I have something in common with.

Write about your most memorable birthday.

I have the birthday blues,
and you would have them too
if you special day
was only special to you.

Perhaps that poem is a bit of an exaggeration; however, that is the way I felt when I was growing up. I do not have a twin, so sharing my birthday with siblings, who never shared their birthdays with me, was traumatic. Traumatic may be an overstatement, as well. I wrote a single paragraph about this subject 22 years ago, I discovered the paragraph in some papers I was going through. I copied the paragraph into "Memories of Snow on December 28, 2018, under the title "Birthday Presents: The Main Reason I have Christmas Issues.

All my birthdays are overshadowed with this issue. I know my parents were trying to be fair; however--as an adult--I think being fair with all the siblings can go too far. I would have, just once, like to have a birthday that was memorable because I did not have to share the present opening with my siblings. I know my mother did something special with me ever year, because she told me she did and Mama would not lie about something like that. The problem is, as hard as I try, I cannot remember any of those special things Mama did with me for my birthday. Perhaps that is because those "outings" occurred before or after December 24, which was my birthday.

I did get some memorable presents from both my mother and my grandparents. All of the memorable presents will dolls, which I really did not mind because they were always dolls I had admired or ask for. I received three dolls that hold special memories. A Betsy Wetsy, a doll as tall as a three year old, and a black doll. My grandmother bought the black doll because I saw it in the store, and wanted one just like that one.

I am forever grateful to Grandma Mary, who bought me--a little white girl--a black doll. Having that beautiful doll taught me a lesson about prejudice that I will never forget. After Christmas, I took the doll with me to play with some of my friends. One of them ask me "Whose baby is that?" I replied "It's mine!" Her reply was "Oh, you adopted it!" Instead of saying "her", "baby", or "Mary" (the doll's name) when she referred to the doll said "it". I did not think the doll was an "it", the doll was Mary, my baby.

What is your opinion of New Year’s Resolutions? Do you make them? Do you keep them?

New Year's Resolutions

New Year's resolutions are wonderful inventions because they are inspiring, creative, encouraging, ego-building, frustrating, and ego-busting little demons simultaneously. In order for them to succeed properly, people need plans on how they are to be achieved. People need to reevaluate them either every month or every three months. In addition, it is wise to rename them. Do Not call them New Year's Resolutions because that raises fear in an individual's subconscious mind and suggest an excuse when they aren't accomplished. After all, they were just New Year's resolutions and New Year's Day is past.

This year, instead of making resolutions, I created a "Goals To List", with eleven items on it. Nine of those items I will reevaluate between March 2 and March 20. At that time, I will change or throw out any of the nine items that I have either accomplished (reasonably well) or no longer excite/enthuse me. The only items on that list I will not change are the two spiritual items. Those two items are (1) place everything in God's hands each morning and (2) bring myself to account each evening.
