Norma's Wanderings around a small section of Montana |
PROMPT March 20th What are your favorite movie genres? Share some recommendations with your readers! Classic movies on TCM are my favorites. I like Casablanca. The African Queen. Citizen Kane. Gone with the Wind. Guess I have to watch these movies before everyone finds issues with genders, racism, feminism, slavery or some other issues. Off topic: Seen in a post in the Roundup Facebook swap and sell: Have some things that clip into some things and miscellaneous man stuff Some things you point some things you pull back somethings cover things Makes you wonder what this is all about. The best part is there were multiple postings from women saying they were interested in this. Curious. Maybe it’s a secret message from a spy ring. I'm guessing it has to do with guns. What about you? |
PROMPT March 19th How are you different now than you were in the year 2010? What have been the most significant changes in your life in the last ten years? I’ve been keeping track of things that happen in my life. Accidents, surgeries, babies, new addresses, jobs, that sort of things. So since 2010, we moved from Gardiner, MT to Roundup, MT. We gave up the job in a motel as managers to a home with no jobs. We retired. From a pretty good gig with housing and an income for nine months to no income but social security. But our house is paid for. I had a car accident when we first moved here. Not serious, but still an accident. Then last fall I hit a deer. Little bugger. Annoying but still another accident. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September of 2012. Now that was a life changer. We dealt with that in Gardiner. I spent the winter of 2013 recuperating from the surgery. But you know, somehow you figure things out and go on. I was blessed that it was a benign tumor. In Roundup I had an incident where I hit my head on a fence walking the dog in 2018. That you wouldn’t think would be a big deal. But when you have metal plates in your head, it can complicate things. I developed a spinal fluid leak which required more brain surgery. So I go back in the hospital to repair that leak behind my right eye. Heck of a deal. Two brain surgeries. But they were both successful. Last year I had cataract surgery on both eyes. So now after wearing glasses for over fifty years, I only have to wear reading magnifying glasses. So liberating to not have to grab the glasses first thing in the morning. As I list all these accidents and surgeries, I am amazed at God’s grace in my life. There have also been many births, grandchildren. But also the death of my father, my husband’s mother and father. So this Covid-19 mess is just a bump in the road as far as I am concerned. I’ve been through a lot worse. |
PROMPT March 18th If you were hired to show tourists what life is really like where you live, what would you show them or have them do? I guess I would first show them the museum across the street. It gives folks a realistic view of Roundup, Montana through the years. From beginning to boom to bust to boom to bust. Then I would take them to my friend Mary Jane’s little farm and show them a sheep/cattle/chicken ranch. It’s kinda down in the dumps unfortunately since she does all the work herself. Her husband disappears most days doing his own thing in Roundup. Don't ask. She also does a big garden for selling at a farmer’s market in Billings. But last year with the virus, she was stuck here at a flea market in Roundup. Then I would maybe take them with me on a Meals on Wheels day. We would do the rounds delivering meals, sit with the saints as we eat the meal we just delivered and chat with others, then go to my house for a bit. After a rest, we would go to my church for a prayer meeting. And after some time with the Lord we go to a thrift store to volunteer and have some fun. A full day for sure. A few days in a small town in Montana would be filled with volunteering, meeting friends, church, a few homemade meals, and if it’s nice weather, we'd enjoy a nice visit on the porch swing as we ponder life. |
PROMPT March 17th Pretend that you have found a four-leaf clover that will bring you extraordinary good luck for exactly one day. Write about your lucky day. A four leaf clover! Wow! And here’s another. This yard is full of them. Good thing I waited to mow. I stepped on three more. Wait, I looked closer. They are made of thin paper. I leaned down to look. A little face looked up at me. “What are you looking at?” The face stared at me. I was speechless. “I’m talking to you! What are you looking at!” A tiny elf jumped around. It went from blade of grass to pebble and back again. I knelt down. “I have to tell you, I’ve never seen an elf before so I have to get down to your level. Can I take your picture?” I took out my smartphone. “Put that evil thing down. Get out of my face. Leave me alone. Take a blasted clover and go.” The elf scampered up my pant leg, then up my shirt. I tried to dislodge the little bugger but it stuck like a burr. Soon I had an elf staring straight into my left eye. It spit in my eye. “There, you now have the luck of the Irish. Now leave.” It flew away with little wings. I wiped my eye with a sleeve, picked up my phone, then mowed my grass with the four leaf clovers. |
PROMPT March 16th What lesson do you remember most vividly from your childhood? Good question. And I wish I had a good answer. Maybe piano lessons. They were in a drafty room up the road in a lady’s home. I think my grandmother paid for them. Because they led to band. I played a flute in band for six years. Junior high into high school. For a shy person to be in a group setting like that was a big deal. Maybe I could also add sewing. I was in 4-H. I did sewing. I entered a pitiful dress in the county fair. I can almost remember what it was. But it led to a life-long ability to sew for fun and practical uses. Everyone should know how to sew. Will everyone add do what you’re told? Be nice? Behave? Obey your parents? Don’t talk back? I haven’t read the other responses yet. I was a bit of a rebel. I fear I wasn’t an easy child. We’ve been doing some talks about child-rearing on our church’s radio program. I’m the one that always has the horror stories. The other ladies never seem to have rebelled, talked back, or in turn had rebellious children that gave them grief. But then I remember something I’ve seen, “Well behaved women rarely make history.” Pulitzer Prize winning historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich wrote that. I think I’ll take that as validation. |
PROMPT March 15th What’s your favorite board game or card game to play with friends? Gosh, it has been forever since I’ve played a game of any sort with friends. Hubby and I stay home most of the time. We don’t go out. We don’t have any close friends who host card parties or game nights. I remember Saturday night games with hubby #1. We would gather at a church member’s home and play Rook. I got to hate that game. I never could figure out the rules. Some people got into the game so far that it didn’t hold any fun for me after a while. I do like Scrabble, but no one to play that with me. Yahtzee is fun. Monopoly to me takes too long. I never was good at card games. I remember my father playing cribbage with friends. Never had a chance to learn that. If we can have it, there is now some discussion about safety, we are planning a Bingo night this Friday to benefit the Women's Auxiliary at the hospital. Advertising has already been done, but now the hospital CEO is worried about the virus and all. Whatever. Fine time to express concern. We may still hold the event, just not state it is sponsored by the hospital. We're meeting about this tomorrow. I am so annoyed by all this virus hullabaloo. So most of the time I play silly solitary computer games. |
PROMPT March 14th In your entry, make a list of your favorite words to say. Then describe why they are your favorites and include a pronunciation guide for your readers. Brownie points if you can use your words in a sentence. Hmm. Favorite words? All words are favorites. Where is the dictionary? I used to read the dictionary as a kid. Part of the reason my sister called me weird. Back then, I read everything I could get my hands on. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, books in a day, cereal boxes, newspapers, National Geographics, anything with words. Back before the internet folks, printed words were food to me. I devoured words. I was in a spelling bee once. Came in second. I was berated by my father for losing ‘to that girl’. I was so shy, it was a wonder I was on stage at all. But, whatever, I still have that little trophy to being brave in the 7th grade. I still like to spell. It is something I think I have some skill doing. Speaking of spelling bees, have you ever seen the movie “Akeelah and the Bee”? Good little story about overcoming obstacles, especially as a black child in a poor family. And then it goes deeper into learning, getting past the snubbing at school if you are smart, and how you have to learn words. How the origin of words matter; the Latin, the Greek. It also shows how a community can band together to help raise a child. Watch it. I will enter a contest and use the required number of words. If I win the contest, then those words will be my favorites. But I do have a Bible verse I am particularly fond of for the words it contains. 1 John 4:8 “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” |
PROMPT March 13th What traditional ethnic food dishes from your culture does your family still enjoy? Tell us about how the recipe was passed down and what modifications were made over the years. No ethnic dishes were harmed in the kitchen when I was growing up. I can’t remember one dish that was not main-stream, mid-west boring food. Meat and potatoes, fresh corn and tomatoes in summer, pork chops, ham, chicken, roast beef, meat loaf, the usual meat items. Mashed potatoes, rice-a-roni, canned vegetables. I think somewhere along the way Chef Boy Ar Dee pizza in a box was introduced. Perhaps spaghetti once in awhile. Maybe chili or soup now and then. The monotony of it all is mainly why I try to mix up mealtime. I hate to serve the same thing all the time. I always try to have a fresh salad at our main meal. I used to hate left-overs. I now try to embrace them, even change them up a bit to make them more appetizing. I know some people even throw them out. As a person who has seen hunger in her life, I think that anyone who throws food out is wasteful. Food is precious. We need to treat it with respect. That might sound a little goofy, but think about it. Our bodies are the only possession we really own, no one can take it away from us but God. So why not give your body the fuel it needs to operate the best way it possibly can. The whole Covid virus crisis has given us a reason to take care of our bodies the best we can. It can start by eating right. |
PROMPT March 12th Imagine you had to create an art piece for a gallery or museum. What would you create? Maybe I would incorporate a multi-media collage. Perhaps I could call upon all the crafts I’ve ever dabbled in, knitting, crochet, embroidery, photography, batik, sewing, writing, and then somehow insert some live plants. I couldn’t look any crazier than this. Michael Landy in Great Britain took a few years to destroy all his possessions to refute consumerism. Then he took all those possessions and made an art installation. Then destroyed it. He named it ‘Break Down’. https://web.archive.org/web/20140503015726/http://lostart.production.screenmedia... And then I heard today about an auction for a digital only artwork - something about bits, blockchain, digital only. The masterpiece sold for about $70 million. Amazing. When I look at his ‘work of art’, I think, “I could do that!” And then I think “What crap!”. Another crazy idea of art. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/11/most-expensive-nft-ever-sold-auctions-for-over-6... |
PROMPT March 11th What qualities do you look for in a friend? Are there any qualities you avoid? What qualities about yourself do you think make a good friend? I find that a friend is someone that I can trust with a secret. A friend is someone I can call with a request and it will be done. I don’t have many friends. I have never had many close friends. In fact, I have one really close friend, someone I trust with my life. This person knows me, all my good, all my bad, all my secrets. My husband. I avoid people that are ‘drama queens’ and skew everything and every conversation back to them. People that can’t keep a promise won’t be my friend for long. They may be an acquaintance, but not a friend. I also won’t waste time with people that don’t show respect to me or others. As a friend to others, I think I am kind to most people. I am reliable, I keep my promises, I have a pretty good sense of humor, and I will be there for you. You call me and I will try my best to do what you ask of me. I will respect you and your opinions. This is what friends do. |
