What a beautiful and heartbreaking story. I really like how circumstances come full circle for Tricia and she is there to help another "little red haired girl." I also love seeing how you so often drop a little bit of yourself into stories or characters. Reading this I couldn't help but remember how you found my old Trixie Belden book in the attic at grandma's and we had to buy the whole set after that. Books were always a strong love of yours and it shines through in this story.
One typo I think ... Settling Kasey on the couch, she wrapped a throw around, continuing to comfort her best she could. I think there should be HER after around???
Other than that, another touching story and keep writing!
The description in this story just pulls the reader into the characters world. I could see the small town and holiday decorations so clearly and Patrick caught my interest right away. You do an excellent job of describing him, facial expressions, body language and moods. It really sets the tone and makes the reader start to feel with him. Anyone who has experienced writers block has to sympathise.
The ending threw me for a complete LOOP! I won't say anything else here but I loved it! Great twist and cliff hanger ending.
As a mother ... this hit home hard. I do not know a parent amoung us who hasn't had to turn their back for those few moments and trust the hand of God to keep our little one safe and yet we blame ourselves for even the most minor skinned knee. When tragedy like this strikes there are no words that can sooth a parent. No words of it being time, a better place, or with God is going to sooth the agonized sense of loss, guilt, and seperation of a parent. You do an incredible job here of showing the crippling pain with your gift for words. I pray this is a pain you will never experience.

Great description here. It is easy to see how a Law enforcement officer could be pushed to that limit in this age of bowing to the politically correct and smarmy lawyers. I am looking forward to seeing where you take this!
You know that I am a huge fan of your writing. I love your unique sense of style! "On the Chance" is like nothing of yours that I, or anyone else on WDC I suspect, has read from you and yet I loved it! You wove a bit of your trademark angst in, keeping it to the heart rending emotional variety, and of course your descriptions were as breathtaking as ever and yet YOU ... Mara ♣ McBain penned something rated E for Everybody! Quite the feat for someone who once told me they couldn't write anything under 18+!!!
I love the poignant romance of this short story. Some great descriptive moments that played out like a movie before my minds eye,
She leaned forward, her forehead and freckled nose pressed to the glass.
Tears prickled behind hazel eyes, threatening to give free rein to the gnawing emptiness inside of her.
The soft sob of her breath fogged the chilled glass as the dam broke. Tears fell, blurring the winter landscape to a dreary gray.
This was a very poignant and soul searching piece. I think that many people will be able to relate to wanting something more from one who has been a good friend for many years only to worry that moving to the next level will somehow damage the closeness or make things awkward if things dont work out. Great job

OMG I thought it amazing the first time but THIS is unbelievable. I love the emotion between them as well as their passion. You captured Gibbs perfectly, his sense of duty, the special accountability he holds himself to. It is completely in character that he would be unable to forgive himself for not protecting one he felt responsible for or loved. You did an amazing job of using familiar and loved characters to create a world of your own. Awesome job. Write on!
I hope that the celebration the United States witnessed that night can continue and it is something that can be built on. Too many people I know are terrified that while the majority can except a black president that it only takes ONE to throw Americans into complete chaos again.

Great looking contest. You certainly didn't skimp on the prizes and it seems to have paid off as you ended up with a lot of entries and a good showing of the WDC's horror power houses! I am not sure horror is my genre but maybe I can try to whip something up for the next round.
It is shamefully true that I would have more confidence in an organ grinder monkey than in any of the blaphamous blow hards they have paraded out as presidential hopefuls. The belief I have in them ranks up there with the tooth fairy! Excellent job at an accurate AND entertaining look at politics.
It is interesting that this childhood meeting and crush developed into something that was an attraction for you for life. I don't think that a lot of people realize how imortant it is for children to just be listened to. It can make all the difference in the world.
What a fascinating murder mystry you have going on here. It seems completely real like something ripped from the headlines and in fact even after reading this I am still not sure it is not until I go up and look for the title of fiction. Amazing creepy job of bringing intense realism to your work. I couldnt find a thing I would change.
*Laughing my butt off* This was a really cute story. The car itself is adorable and I really love the way you bring it to life with a name and all. The car humiliation factor was a new one for me but I can see the poor things point with antlers and a red nose. Cute story for the sentence provided.
I think this contest looks like a lot of fun. I like the no holds barred aspect so a writer can really let it all hang out. I am working on another contest right now but with the extended deadline on this one I think I may be able to do both if I can get steamy enough for this one! LOL
