Written for Monty's Traditional Poetry Contest - looking at life
The Journey's End

There comes a time when the roads we travel
are lost forever, somewhere in the mist of days.
A time comes when there is no looking forward,
we are lost somewhere in a soft lingering haze.

The roads I have traveled, hearts I have known
are but a memory, when memories beckon me.
I am drawn into a metamorphosis of who I was
so many long years ago, youth setting me free.

Oh, I have known the thrill of passion, love lies
in the ruins of a shadowy past, when sunlight
warmed our bodies; strange to remember that
which lasted so fleetingly, on this lonely night.

I have left footprints in the sand of time and yet
when I look back, they have been washed away.
The ocean seeks its revenge on the unwary soul
and waves roll in at high tide, come what may.

I shall not ponder the outcome of this life now,
yet I will follow it through the twists and turns
around the next bend in the road before me.
Life begins, is lived, and ends as the fire burns.

Why waste my time in reminiscing? It's unfair
to have the visions of yesterdays I cannot mend.
I will look homeward, to a deep sleep coming.
I have reached my goal of the journey's end.
