My journal and blog
My name is Billie Gail Stanley-Lackey-Turknett. I am a Christian fiction writer and I write poetry. I am currently working on two books. One called My Brother's Keeper about three brothers back in the western days that struggle to make it through their own personal journey and helping their mother through her own struggles as well. Their dad is lost in the war and another man is plotting to steal their ranch and their mother.

The other about a lady that has been put through hell during her childhood and through her first marriage. She accepts Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior but has to learn to forgive her abusers fully and completely.I hope the book's title will remain "Forgiven" but, you know how some places are. They like to change the titles.

I am a member of The East Texas Writers Guild and I have been able to meet writers and read their work. I can't wait to be in that minority one day.

The song below is one of my all time favorites because of all the changes I have gone through with my sons. I love them heart and soul. Some changes were good and some weren't. I don't regret a second of it all though.
{link:<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/A6i1ywioIm0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>}

I am a Sinner saved by His mercy and grace. I am married to Bobby Turknett. I live in the tiny town of Slocum, TX. I have three sons. Marshall Lackey, Otis (Odie) Lackey III who is married to Courtney Bohannon-Lackey and they have one son, Kason, and one son on the way, Tucker. Then there is Cheyenne Lackey who is married to Danielle Willeford-Lackey and they have one daughter, Abbigail. I have two brothers (one passed away) Bobby and George Stanley II who is married to Rebekah Stanley and they have four kids together George Stanley III, Madison Stanley, Matthew Pendley, and Nate Stanley. My sister, Kimberley Stanley-Bailey lives in Michigan with her husband, Kevin Bailey. They have three daughters together. Jessica Stanley-Robbins, Robin Bailey, and Casey Bailey. I have a wonderful Mom, Susan Gail Lamb-Stanley-Lawhon and a great stepfather, Briggs (Skip) Lawhon.

I attend Evangelistic Temple in Palestine, TX and I have a ministry called Assisted Living and Nursing Home Readers program where I go into Assisted living centers and nursing homes and read to patients. I believe in paying it forward. These unique people did so much for us in this country and we owe them something for that.

I am a poet but, I have a lot to learn and a lot of growing to do. I am studying several books and watching a lot of youtube videos to get a grasp on what it takes to write right. I also joined this site to learn all I could about writing and it has been a struggle learning how to get through this site but, I am sure I'll get it all down soon.

Everyone here has been so helpful and I am grateful. I hope that I can manage to become half the writer some of the people here are. I will feel accomplished if I am able to do just that with my writing.

Thank you for reading and I hope you will read more in the future.

Write about the last light of the day. Take this in any direction you want.

The last light of day can be beautiful, but it can be terrible to drive in. I have seen wrecks from the blare of the sun because of its angle. One of my best friends, years ago, was killed by a driver when they didn't see him crossing the road when his car was broke down. He didn't see her either apparently. He was hit so hard that he was taken clear out of his boots. I hate driving during this time of the day/evening. The sun is red orange and sits just over the trees and sometimes just below the tree line. It blares at the drivers and it makes sure it is your only focus, taking your focus off of the road. Even sunshades don't help the driver. I know there is nothing that can be done for it, but it is good to be able to complain about it to someone.

Who can say at what point dying begins?

The minute you begin to live you begin to age and die. A lot of people look at it like this... You begin to die the minute you stop living or when you give up on life. You can be any age and die, but if you are not living this precious life that God has granted you then you are not living at all. A lot of people live a dead life in their houses, trapped behind the walls and doors, ignoring everyone and everything. Not having anything to do with family or friends, not celebrating holidays, birthdays, or anything like that. You are a dead man breathing air, but dead nonetheless. It is a sad situation, but many people live this way.

If you could be any age again for a week, which would you choose?

I'd be twenty one again and I'd pack up all my stuff and leave my husband for good. I'd hope it would stick for the me in the past. I'd have tons of photos taken of my boys and me and bring them back to the present with me. My house flooded once and all of my bags were packed in the area where it flooded and all of my photos were ruined. I have no baby pictures. I'd start my old self on writing classes and poetry classes or books, so when I got back to my present self I'd be smarter in that subject than I am now. If I ever had a genie I know what I would wish for. To go back in time and know what I know now. I would want to be filthy rich, and I would want the world to love and follow Jesus Christ. Those are my three wishes.

On this day in 1851, Herman Melville's Moby Dick was published in New York. Moby-Dick is now considered a great classic of American literature and contains one of the most famous opening lines in fiction: "Call me Ishmael." Initially, though, the book about Captain Ahab and his quest for a giant white whale was a flop.

Prompt : Call me....choose your name and tell me about anything you want. Write a story, a poem or tell me about something that is going on in your life but please begin your entry with Call me.

Call me Nano because that is what my grandchildren call me. That is what is on my car window in the back, and that is what is stitched across my bag and shirt. I was Nano long before I ever heard of NaNoWriMo and I had never heard of another grandmother being called Nano either. I did look it up on this website for names for grandparents and it was there, so I know someone somewhere on the planet is being called Nano like I am. I just think it is unique, interesting, and different.

Everyone has their method of madness to overcome writer's block especially those of you doing NANO, what's your secret?
I hear people talking about morning pages, or writing about the goals for the day. Then I hear other people talk about taking notes ahead of time for their writing. Do you do silly writing games like word clusters or word associations? Do you look at pictures? Listen to specific music. Or do you just force yourself and hope for the best.

I have found that if I get up and walk around, listen to some spiritual music/Christian praise and worship music then I am a little more creative. I like to write in a journal, but I am a procrastinator and forget or just get plain lazy about it. If I go through family photos I am able to write poetry about family and if I listen to the Christian music or read the bible I am able to write about Jesus Christ. Sometimes I do force myself and hope for the best. I have a test coming up in the Poetry pen and I believe I will have to force that one because I have been trying to write it and it has just been happening. I don't know what I will do about it. I pray it turns out half way decent, but I am pretty sure it wont.

Facebook use to be a big deal to me for a short period of time and now everyone wants to know where I am. I am too busy writing to worry about Facebook anymore and I am sick and tired of the cheap shots people take at each other and the gossip on Facebook to want to hang around on there much anymore. Do any of you feel that way anymore? The kids and even some educated adults can't even spell properly either. They abbreviate everything and I don't know what they are saying. It really urks me and I feel left out of the conversation. I make sure everyone knows what I have to say and say it clearly. I only wish others felt the same way. Lucky for me most of the people on my Facebook feel that way, but I do have nieces and nephews that are a little immature and don't feel that way, but what can I do? I can't delete them. That would start a world war.

Prompt: You open your front door one morning and find a black leather glove laying on your porch. Why is the glove on your porch? Who does it belong to? Have fun. Be creative.

It would belong to a man that knows about my antique rifle that I own that is worth quite a lot. It is from the Spanish war. He was trying to break in after my husband left at four a.m. for work. The gun is in my safe in my bedroom, but my husband locks the doors and I have a yapping dog that would wake me if someone tried to break in, so that is why the glove was left behind. My dog startled him.

If you could go back in time to when you were in your teens or early twenties and change your career focus, what would you change it to? Knowing what you know now.

I would start training to be a writer a lot sooner than my forties. I have so much to learn and would have caught on a lot easier had I picked it up then. I will always regret that. I read so many wonderful novels and I just don't see that kind of stuff coming out of me, but I am trying. It would surprise me most of all if I ever wrote a book that hit it big. I have learned a lot just by joining this site. I plan on reading as much as possible to learn as much as possible, so I can write that book of my dreams.

What does the word "productive" mean or look like for you? How has your definition shaped your work-life? Your personal goals?

Productive means to be busy getting something done that you need or want done. I have not been productive. I have been a slacker or a procrastinator. I get nervous and get up and walk around while writing because things are not going quite like I want them to be. I feel like I am getting nowhere fast, so I will do something else for a while. I need to sit down and slog through it to get it done one way or another, but it is not so simple. I am new to this, so I am not sure if all writers have this problem or now, but I sure do. I get blocked. I have a decent plot, but getting there is the problem. I think I have it all down and can write it all out just perfectly, but then when I do it I find that I get stuck. So no, I am not real productive right now, but I am working on it.

Prompt: Do you use flashbacks or flash-forwards in your fictional and true stories? How or why, do you think, they are important, if at all?

I think they are important, but I am not experienced enough to really use them really well. I get mixed up enough staying in the present much less going into the past. I wish I could write my first book with another author, so I can get some experience, but then you can't get a lot of recognition that way. Or maybe you do. I don't know.

3 Books or series you’d bring with you to a deserted island.

I just recently read a three book series called A discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The book of Life. They are outstanding reads. My other series I'd take is the Outlander series because they are outstanding as well, but in a different kind of way. The third book is a hard one to choose since I have read so many good books, so I will just chose Fingersmith which is a new book I just read and it is good. It has several twist and turns that I think you will like.

Prompt: November is National Peanut Butter Lovers Month. Are you a peanut butter lover or just an acquittance? What is your relationship with peanut butter?
Alternate Prompt: November 10 is Forget-Me-Not Day and United States Marine Corps Day. Chose one or tell us about a November holiday in your section of the world.

Peanut butter cookies are my favorite cookie of all time. Every time I visit Subway I get some of their peanut butter cookies and when I find the time I bake them, which is not often. I normally burn every cookie I bake because my stove and oven is gas and I have never gotten the hang of cooking delicate things on it or in it.

Ingredients

1 pound dry ziti pasta
1 onion, chopped
1 pound lean ground beef
2 (26 ounce) jars spaghetti sauce
6 ounces provolone cheese, sliced
1 1/2 cups sour cream
6 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

Step-by-step View
Directions

1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add ziti pasta, and cook until al dente, about 8 minutes; drain.
2.In a large skillet, brown onion and ground beef over medium heat. Add spaghetti sauce, and simmer 15 minutes.
3.Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish. Layer as follows: 1/2 of the ziti, Provolone cheese, sour cream, 1/2 sauce mixture, remaining ziti, mozzarella cheese and remaining sauce mixture. Top with grated Parmesan cheese.
4.Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until cheeses are melted.

Prompt: Write about an experience that led you to change a deep-held opinion or belief about what life is.

If you wish to generalize instead, write about some of the reasons or ways people may change their opinions and beliefs about life.

My son changed his belief in God to no God at all after he had a bad experience at a church. That is why it is so important for Christians to watch how they act. People, like my son, don't realize we are not Christ like. We are striving to be Christ like and there is a huge difference. What happened was this. The pastors daughter started dating a black guy and the church threatened to cast pastor out over it because they are prejudice jerks. I visited that church a few times and they are a bunch of rich people that look down their noses at the rest of us. Anyway, the black guy is my son's best friend and since they all turned like that it showed my son that Christians were no better than the rest of the world, which we aren't, but we have got Christ there to forgive us of our sin and to make us a better person.

My son met a guy shortly after that little episode at the church that was an atheist and my son soaked up everything he said because he was disappointed in the church at the time. Now my son is an atheist and I am very upset about it. I try to leave him alone about it, but I do talk to him about it from time to time. I hope he comes around and comes to his senses before it is too late. I am praying for him to be returned to Jesus' flock.

Just because a set of people don't act the way you want them to act doesn't mean you have to give up on the entire human race. I try to tell him that, but he has made up his mind. I am at a loss.

It is easy to overwhelm yourself on WDC and I have done that a few times. I am at that point now just a little. I had to back out of a few forum challenges I wanted to be a part of because I just didn't have the time. I am no longer a "newbie" technically, but I still feel like I am in some ways. I know my way around WDC now and can review quite nicely, but there is still so much more to learn. I even ran my own challenge and auction and they turned out nicely. The thing I want to say here is not to overwhelm yourself too much and if you feel like you have then just back out of a few things. No one will get upset with you. They have all been there.

I read and study words I don't understand which is a lot. I don't remember what they mean later because of my memory problems or use them in a sentence, but I like to be able to understand it in a sentence if I were to run across it again. That seems to trigger some tiny memory of once knowing it.

Yes, I was reading again, another blog I follow. What is point of view? How do you find that perfect voice in your story? Do you agree with how the author explained it? Do you prefer a particular tense when writing?

For a new writer, such as myself, it is difficult to determine tense or POV. I struggle with it and I am always getting reviews that tell me to correct the problem. I get frustrated because I think I am doing it right when the entire time I am doing it wrong. I agree with the author, but getting that on paper correctly is a lot harder to do than say.

How I Use Facebook

I use FB to communicate with my friends and family. I also have two groups on there. One is a prayer group and the other is a family only group. I don't get on there everyday like I use to because it got to where it was all I did while online and I have a lot more to do online or on my computer than that. I also repost Christian issues from around the world and share photos. I have several friends, but I know 99% of them, personally, one way or another. If you ever want to add me to FB just put in Billie Gail Turknett or billieturknett@windstream.net

Today is National Bittersweet Chocolate Day. In case you are not sure what bittersweet chocolate is, its a chocolate liquor to which sugar, cocoa butter and vanilla have been added. It does have less sugar and more liquor than semisweet chocolate however, the two of them may be interchangeable when baking.

What is your favorite chocolate recipe? Do you use bittersweet chocolate? Semi-sweet? Milk chocolate? We would love to know how you use it, if you want to share a recipe.

I like to use milk chocolate in my cookies and found this recipe online a while back and have been using it ever since. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

How to Make Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies

Things You'll Need

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 sticks butter
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 large eggs
1 2/3 cups chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

2 Sift the baking soda and salt with the flour.

3 Put the butter, sugar and brown sugar in a large bowl. Beat until smooth and creamy.

4 Add vanilla extract. Stir until combined.

5 Add eggs, one at a time. Beat on high speed until completely mixed with the batter.

6 Mix in the flour, 1/2 cup at a time.

7 Add chocolate chips, and if desired, chopped nuts. Stir them into the batter with a spoon rather than the mixer, so they will keep their consistency.

8 Drop dough on cookie sheet, one tablespoonful for each cookie. Alternately, you can bake a large birthday cookie by evenly spreading the entire batch of dough on a large cookie sheet. Line the cookie sheet with parchment paper for easy transfer to a large dish or pastry board for decorating.

9 Bake individual cookies from nine to 11 minutes. A large birthday cookie may take a few minutes longer until it reaches a light golden brown.

10 Remove cookies from oven and let them sit on the cookie sheet for two to three minutes until they firm up a little. Then transfer the cookies to a wire rack to finish cooling.

11 Decorate with icing, if desired, after the birthday cookie has completely cooled.

. an interesting blog today about finding your authentic writing voice. The author suggests a writer list the first three things that come to mind when you're asked to describe yourself/your writing. Read something you wrote recently. Do you hear any of those descriptors? You should, if you're writing openly. What do you think of her advice?

First three things would be; rushed, nervous about mistakes, and slow. I am a slow writer because I try to fix my mistakes as I go. I have gotten myself into a fix a few times, but I don't want to make a mistake and have to go back through the story and rewrite parts of it. I am more of a reader than a writer and I see my writing style in some of the books I read. Right now I am reading Fingersmith and I really like the writing style in it. It has short choppy sentences, but it wouldn't do for the book I am writing and I am already a few chapters in.

Prompt: Everywhere I go, I see Christmas sales and decorations. Do you feel the marketing and consumerism of Christmas has gotten out of hand?

I believe that it has gotten out of hand. It has lost all of its meaning as well. People don't stop to think about the real meaning of Christmas, Jesus. They have taken this gift giving and made it something ugly. We are supposed to give in memory of Jesus and the gifts He received at birth. I don't even know where we started with the gift giving either or if it is the right thing to do, but we do it none the less. It has turned in to a thing where you have to buy expensive gifts or nothing at all. Children don't want something from your heart. They want the latest toy that has come out no matter the cost. Jesus has to be weeping over the traditions of today.

Prompt: "Nothing is impossible when the word itself says I'm possible." Audrey Hepburn Do you agree with this statement?

I think this is supposed to be "the world itself" instead of the word, but I believe that, but I am saying that to myself right now. I am doing the Nanowrimo and I keep telling myself that my book is impossible to write. At least it is by me. I am new to this and I have a lot to learn. I feel like I have jumped in over my head and should have waited a another year to do it. Maybe then I could write the book. I have to keep reminding myself that nothing is impossible and that I can always edit the book and make it better. It is just difficult. All of my work on WDC has errors and I am constantly being told what to fix. I just don't think I have it in me sometimes and other times I do.

Prompt: Do you think music is a universal language that can connect people across the world? Why or Why not?
Alternate Prompt: Write about your favorite quote. Please include the quote if you chose this prompt.

I do believe music is a universal language that connects the world together. Look at all the singers from all over the world that fly all over the world everyday for concerts and sing to crowds that don't even know what they are saying. Although, I believe, English is the language that links us all. Americans got lucky there, but during the forming of our country we could have been selected to speak German instead of English. It all worked out for the best. I think so anyway. Back to the music... We don't have to know how to speak a certain language to be uplifted by someone's music. Look at Beethoven's music. It is known all over the world and it doesn't have a single word in it.

This quote speaks for itself. I love it though and wish to live by it.

“If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.” Charles Spurgeon

Prompt: The year is 2214 and your computer's dusty hard drive shows up at an antique store. Write a note to the buyer what they will find in there.

Dear sir or madam

This computer holds the memories that my mind can no longer hold. I cherish them and would like to keep them. You will find a family on here that is close and love each other through it all. We will be in you debt if you would return the hard drive to me at:
I have three grandchildren's photos on this machine, three sons, a loving husband, my extended family and friends who I hope to never forget. If you return it to me, I will be able to remember all over again and keep them close to my heart forever.

Don't you just hate it when you are not finished with something (like this) and when you sit still to get busy finishing it up, you realize you forgot something and have to get back up again? I did that yesterday about six times before I finally decided I'd not get up again for any reason. It is frustrating to say the least.

Let's talk " Many of us associate keeping a diary with our emotionally volatile teenage years. But new research suggests that recording our run-of-the-mill, daily experiences, rather than just our highs and lows, could bring us unexpected joy." Do you agree or disagree? Do you keep a diary ?

I love keeping a diary, but I find that I can't be completely honest with it though for fear of someone reading it. I am a hit and miss kind of diary keeper anyway. I will do it for a while and then slack off some and then start back up again. I really need to keep one and be honest about how I feel about certain situations, but I also fear that my children might read it after I am gone and think less of me for some of the feelings and thoughts that I have. It is a hard one for sure.

Let's talk about Brittany Maynard's "Right to Die" decision? What do you think about having the choice? Is it the easy way out? Or it is more important for the person to maintain their right to die with dignity?

I understand where she is coming from and I think I'd want the same right to die as she did, but I feel like God allows sickness into our lives to strengthen the family unit. Your illness can bring someone to the Lord the second before you die. It is all apart of God's greater plan. It is difficult for me to decide if this is the right thing to do because of my faith and belief that God is the ruler of the earth and all of its inhabitants, and he makes all those decisions. Not us. I watched my father die of lung cancer, so I know what she was trying hard to not have to go through. It is the most difficult situation to be in for sure. I just pray that she has found peace and is resting in the arms of Jesus right now.

We just finished Maleficent and I have to say that it is not all they led you to believe. It was supposed to be magnificent, but it fell a little flat. There was not enough staging, there was over acting, too dark (probably to hide the graphics), and the characters didn't fit the actors and actresses that played them. It was meant to be funny, evil, and good all rolled into one, and I guess it was, but it fell flat on the funny part. I do like the fact that there were NO curse words in it. Hollyrude can't put a movie now-a-days without fillers like curse words in it to make it interesting. Maybe it is just me, but I like shows where humans do most of the stunts and there is less graphics because it makes it look too fake. I guess that is what they were going for in Maleficent, a magical place, a dark dangerous place, and a mad man for a king or two of them rather.
