My journal and blog
My name is Billie Gail Stanley-Lackey-Turknett. I am a Christian fiction writer and I write poetry. I am currently working on two books. One called My Brother's Keeper about three brothers back in the western days that struggle to make it through their own personal journey and helping their mother through her own struggles as well. Their dad is lost in the war and another man is plotting to steal their ranch and their mother.

The other about a lady that has been put through hell during her childhood and through her first marriage. She accepts Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior but has to learn to forgive her abusers fully and completely.I hope the book's title will remain "Forgiven" but, you know how some places are. They like to change the titles.

I am a member of The East Texas Writers Guild and I have been able to meet writers and read their work. I can't wait to be in that minority one day.

The song below is one of my all time favorites because of all the changes I have gone through with my sons. I love them heart and soul. Some changes were good and some weren't. I don't regret a second of it all though.
{link:<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/A6i1ywioIm0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>}

I am a Sinner saved by His mercy and grace. I am married to Bobby Turknett. I live in the tiny town of Slocum, TX. I have three sons. Marshall Lackey, Otis (Odie) Lackey III who is married to Courtney Bohannon-Lackey and they have one son, Kason, and one son on the way, Tucker. Then there is Cheyenne Lackey who is married to Danielle Willeford-Lackey and they have one daughter, Abbigail. I have two brothers (one passed away) Bobby and George Stanley II who is married to Rebekah Stanley and they have four kids together George Stanley III, Madison Stanley, Matthew Pendley, and Nate Stanley. My sister, Kimberley Stanley-Bailey lives in Michigan with her husband, Kevin Bailey. They have three daughters together. Jessica Stanley-Robbins, Robin Bailey, and Casey Bailey. I have a wonderful Mom, Susan Gail Lamb-Stanley-Lawhon and a great stepfather, Briggs (Skip) Lawhon.

I attend Evangelistic Temple in Palestine, TX and I have a ministry called Assisted Living and Nursing Home Readers program where I go into Assisted living centers and nursing homes and read to patients. I believe in paying it forward. These unique people did so much for us in this country and we owe them something for that.

I am a poet but, I have a lot to learn and a lot of growing to do. I am studying several books and watching a lot of youtube videos to get a grasp on what it takes to write right. I also joined this site to learn all I could about writing and it has been a struggle learning how to get through this site but, I am sure I'll get it all down soon.

Everyone here has been so helpful and I am grateful. I hope that I can manage to become half the writer some of the people here are. I will feel accomplished if I am able to do just that with my writing.

Thank you for reading and I hope you will read more in the future.

Prompt: How do you communicate best? Speaking or writing?

Writing because I get too nervous. I begin to trip over my tongue and stutter. I forget things and peoples names. I forget entire conversations right in the middle of the conversation if I get nervous. I get tripped up very easily and tend to try to repeat the same point that gets stuck in my head to get my point across when I get in situations like that.

Prompt: When you think of succulence, do you think of a food, person, plant, or something else. Tell us what the word brings to mind.

Honestly? This is a little embarrassing and I am not picking on any one race or size people, but I think of bigger black girls when I hear this word because they place themselves in this category. They are big, sexy, and proud of it. I know it goes for plants and other things like fruit, but that is the first thing that pops in my head. *FacePalm*

Is laughter the best medicine? Do you believe it really makes a difference with stress and our health? Share some laughter with us.

I do believe laughter is the best medicine. It brings the depressed out of their funk even if it is just for a little while. It helps people who are in the hospital with serious injuries and other medical conditions feel better and it brightens their day. It may not "medically" make us any better, but we are better for it.

I wish I could share some laughter with you. I have a dry sense of humor and don't get most jokes. I don't laugh at most things and when I do laugh it is at odd things no one else laughs at. I don't know what to share with you. I am thinking. Oh, I have one.

What Price a Sermon?

One beautiful Sunday morning, Reverend Barnard announces to his congregation, 'My good people, I have here in my hands three sermons......
A $100 sermon that lasts five minutes
A $50 sermon that lasts fifteen minutes
And a $20 sermon that lasts a full hour.

Now, we'll take the collection and see which one I'll deliver.'

Prompt: You are a pumpkin sitting on a porch. What sights do you see? What are your thoughts?

I see parents dressed up as the tin man and Dorothy and they had their little daughter dressed up as the good witch walking up the side walk to the house I am sitting at. I see three young boys, brothers is my guess, dressed like rock stars, coming up the walk to get loaded with candy. I see two little ghost past by with a young mother walking close by coming down the side walk, but they pass us by. I guess they had plenty of candy or it was getting late. Either way, it was getting late, and the crowd was thinning out. The hostess was sitting in a chair on the porch in her wicked witches costume. She had a large green nose with this huge wart on it with hair growing out of it. Her whole face is green as well. I do believe she is the one the house fell on in that movie. Here comes two more little tots. One dressed as a frog and the other as a snake and they are painted green as well. Green is a popular color on Halloween as well as black.

Prompt: Explore the idea of manipulation. Is it ever okay to manipulate someone? What if they never find out or get hurt by it? What if it's the manipulation of consumers by a company?

Manipulation is never okay and it is ever present in today's market and in the world in general. It is underhanded and devious. Today's industry can't seem to market their wares without some type of manipulation and that isn't American. It just bugs the crap out of me and it should bug the crap out of each one of us. Our kids don't have a chance and just think of what our grandchildren will be subjected to. They are getting more ignorant everyday and the Nation's industry is getting more manipulative everyday. They are trying to suck you in and make you do things that you would not normally do.

I feel pretty strongly we've all heard a train whistle whoo-hoo wailing in the distance. Maybe a baby cooing in their crib or somewhere. What about the high pitch screech of a fire-truck? Sound fills a void in our writing, don't you agree. They invite the reader in to share the experience.

1.What in your opinion is the best sound of all? 2. What is the worst sound of all. 3. Finally, Share an experience about a sound that truly moved you.

1. Subway sounds because it shows movement and busyness. 2. Rats and mice eating or rummaging through stuff make my skin crawl. 3. Silence can be deafening.

Prompt: Do you believe in destiny?

I use to believe that our lives are predestined. God has laid it all out for us even though He gives us choices. He knows what choices we will make. This is called “fatalism,” and it is not biblical.

What is biblical is that man was created to make moral choices and that he is responsible for these choices. The Fall of Man was not a predetermined event in which they were hapless victims of a Puppet-Master God. They had the ability to choose obedience or disobedience. They knew what the result of their decision would be, and they were held accountable.

Prompt: Write one or more Murphy's Law for Writers or Writing. For some examples of various Murphy's Laws see Murphy's laws site All the laws of Murphy in one place

http://chrismcmullen.wordpress.com/2013/04/27/murphys-laws-of-writing/

(1) You are more likely to be interrupted when you’re in the middle of a very deep thought. Silencing your phone, sending the kids out, and disabling the doorbell simply inspire Murphy’s creativity.

(2) Your muse will abandon you whenever you need her the most. But don’t worry: She’ll return as soon as you become too preoccupied to write.

(3) Your best ideas are most likely to come when you don’t have anything to write with or to write on. You’re also likely to be frequently interrupted between your moment of inspiration and the moment you’re able to jot it down.

(4) Whenever you correct a set of typos, you introduce some new ones.

(5) The fewer words you write, the greater the chances that there will be a glaring typo.

(6) Your worst typos are most likely to occur in the most prominent places, such as the first paragraph of the book or the book description.

(7) It’s much easier to see somebody else’s mistakes than it is to find your own.

(8) Not checking your preview or proof is like waving a large red flag with Murphy’s name on it.

(9) If you’re not sure about something that you’re writing, but don’t take the time to check, it will probably be wrong. However, if you do take the time to check, it will probably be right.

(10) The more people who read your writing, the greater the chances that there will be an embarrassing mistake in it. Presenting it to a large audience via PowerPoint improves the odds.

(11) After submitting revisions, if you quickly thumb through your book, your eye is very likely to spot a typo.

(12) The more frequently you check your sales report, the more likely you are to be disappointed.

(13) The more frequently you check your book reviews, the more likely you are to be disappointed.

(14) You’re much more unlikely to see a sale post on your report while you’re spending money.

(15) A good review is 100 times more likely to disappear than a bad review.

Writer's Workshop Wednesday: Sean Haldane is a nominee for the post of Professor of Poetry at Oxford University. He said, "I now think poetry has more capacity to change people than psychotherapy." What do you think about this statement? You can read an interview with Dr. Haldane here .

I would not think so. Psychotherapy is specialized and uses a variety of techniques to help a patient recover. Poetry can move you in one direction or another, but can't heal you. I don't see this being the case at all.

War Chest Tuesday: Is there a particular number that has any special significance to you? Maybe it's an old address, a jersey number, or a date...take us down your memory lane and tell us about why that number means something to you.

My special number is 7 because it is God's special number as well. It is biblical as well and there is research to back this claim up. I will post that here in just a second, but I want you to understand that even if it were not God's special number it would be mine because I have a connection to it. I like to buy things in sevens or buy things with seven on it. I am not one of those people that have to count seven steps and then count seven things or have things in lines of sevens. I just like that number. Here is some of the research on it. There is plenty more out there if you are interested in reading up on it.

•The number seven symbolizes God's perfection, His sovereignty and holiness. God created earth - seven days; One seven-day week is a reminder of our creator; God blessed the seventh day, making it holy (Exodus 20:8-11)
Answer The number 7 is important in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. It seems that numerology was so important that representing an event or series of events with the number 7 helped prove that the story was true. The number 7 was of special importance in the Zoroastrian religion, where there were 7 creations, 7 regions of the world, 7 Amesha Spenta (who became the 7 archangels of Judaism), and so on. This would have a great influence on the evolution of numerology in Judaism. However, the number 7 was already significant in Judaic numerology, indicating some earlier influence.

Some examples of 7 in the Old Testament: the first creation story in Genesis, written during or just after the Babylonian Exile, has seven days; Noah took every clean beast and every bird by sevens, and in seven days it rained; Jacob served seven years for Leah and seven years for Rachel; Egypt had seven years of plenty and seven years of famine.

Luke's Gospel demonstrates that Jesus was predestined for greatness because great men occurred in multiples of seven generations starting from Adam, Enoch at 7, Abraham at 21, David at 35 and Jesus at 77, while Matthew demonstrates that Jesus was predestined for greatness because there were 14 generations from Josiah to Jesus, just as there had been 14 generations from David to Josiah and from Abraham to David (14 being 2 times 7).

There were seven heavens and the apocryphal Ascension of Isaiah had the Son descend into the lower world and then re-ascend to the seventh heaven.

The New Testament has the seven loaves and fishes; seven devils exorcised from Mary Magdalene; forgiveness seventy times seven. Also, Revelation has seven churches and many symbols are seven fold, usually because of the 7 angels (archangels).

Prompt: Do you think it is possible to heal on our own, or do we always need to reach out for the comfort of other people in order to fully heal?

I believe we can and do heal on our own if we are strong enough in the first place, but if we aren't then we won't. God did not make man to be alone, but to live together, to help each other out, to help heal each other, to love each other, and to marry and reproduce. When we have that partner or friend with us then we have a care taker that helps get us food and water that sustains us while we are too weak to get up to do it. We need rest when we are that sick and we can't be out hunting down food for broth or soup. That is what our partner is there for.

Prompt: There's no such thing as fair. Agree? Disagree? Tap out a few words about it.

Depends on how you look at it. Say you go for ice cream one day. You buy two pints. One for you and one for your friend. Your friend pays you back every penny he owes you for his pint, but are you square? No. Why no? Because you are out the gas. Now if he goes the next day and does the same thing in reverse are you even? Depends on what he is driving right? Say he drives a little Toyota and you drive a jacked up SUV. You are still out more gas, so you see, you are never really square. That is going a little too far though. I'd say that if you pay for yours and I pay for mine then we are square or it is fair.

Everyone has practical tips they feel make it easier to write, let's compare notes. Maybe we can help each other be more efficient. What rituals do you have that keep you focused and on track with your writing?

I have a chart on every character that I hand write because I memorize that better than typing it. I know that sounds odd, but it is just how it works for me. I keep things such as, hair, eye, and skin color. I keep body style, nationality, sexual preference, speech style, slang used, and all sorts of tidbit that comes up with each character and each character sheet is different for each character. It all depends on what needs to be known per character. Using these sheets on every character will help you to stay organized and will help to keep your story straight when you have a ton of characters you are writing about.

It's Creation Saturday! Remember, this can be a poem, a short story, or anything else you'd like...just be creative!
It has been raining a lot here and then it cooks you, so I thought I'd play with that Frozen song a bit. I don't feel creative tonight. I have a 6 week old that has been crying for a while now (just laid him down) and a three year old running around, so all I want to do is get through this and get some sleep.

Let it rain, let it rain
Don't hold it back anymore
Let it rain, let it rain
Don't hold it back anymore
Let the storm rage on
The rain never bothered me anyway.

We are going to do a little word play with this prompt. Open a page in the dictionary or a book and write down the first three adjectives you see. Now, tell us about someone you know who personifies these traits in some way.

Strong, serious, and sufficient.

My husband personifies these traits in one way or the other. He is strong and sure. He is funny, yet serious when he needs to be. He is self sufficient and sufficient for me and those in and around us. He has proven himself to be true time and time again. He is a man born out of his time. He is an amazing man.

You've been to this place before but you can't remember how or when. The stars are so bright that they are almost blinding you. That familiar blue flash grows louder and louder and your body pulsates with pain. "Not again", you say but you aren't quite sure why. Write about the events leading up to this scene.

I leave Wal-mart and head for the drug store to pick up prescriptions. I am feeling tired, but nothing I can't drive through or so I think. I get my prescriptions and drive out on Hwy 287 headed home and turn on to Hwy 2419, and there is where the problems come in. I am driving down the long hill and the next thing I know I wake up in pain and confused. I see my brother running at me with this look of horror on his face that I will never forget.

Write a blog entry, or story your choice in which each sentence starts with the next letter of the alphabet starting with A.
For example ~ A orange cat joined out family. Boldly challenging the older cats, he has quickly made his presence felt. Clearly, the older cats are not going to take this lying down.

The good news is there are only 26 letters in the alphabet so hence only 26 lines to have fun with.

A boy and his horse galloped in the field. Buster was the horses name and racing around barrels was his game. Cathy was the boy's sister and she had a pony herself. Duster is the ponies name for Cathy's pony. Everywhere Cathy and her brother went they rode Buster and Duster. Frank was the boys name and he and Cathy were twins with twin ponies. Groundwork is what pa told them they had to learn first before they could ride in the rodeo on Duster and Buster.

Henry was the neighbor who was in love with Duster and Buster, and he wasn't allowed to have a pony which made matters worse. "I will have Duster and Buster before it is all said and done, " Henry stated one day when he was fed up with the twins riding the ponies in front of his house. "Just watch and see if I don't have them," Henry said. "Keeper Kent should buy you a pony Henry," said Cathy one day as she passed by and witnessed one of Henry's fits for the ponies. "Loser!" exclaimed Henry and he ran off to tell his mom something mean Cathy didn't say. Mom called them in one day and talked to them about not riding past Henry's house anymore. "It is causing too many problems with that family and we just can't have it anymore, so don't ride down that way anymore." "No problem Mom, we won't." Now they had a much shorter route to take when they went riding all because Henry was being vindictive and mean spirited.

On one of short riding trips away from Henry's house they were caught in a hail storm of rocks. Peter, Henry, and Paul were pelting them with rocks. "Quit it guys! You are going to make our horses throw us!" Rocks hit them all about until they were able to get away, but they were worried about the ponies being hurt, so they got off of them and walked them home. Something told them that this would not be the last they heard from these three hooligans. The very next day the same thing happened. Understanding for Henry is long past over with now. Very much so did they want for him to get into trouble, but what could they do? Wait and let him get caught in his own trap by taking the parents along on the next ride and having them ride just a little ways back from them so they could see what happens. Xenial should be top priority here. "You, Cathy, tell mom and dad our plan and I'll tell Keeper Kent." "Zoom was born today kids and we are going to give him to Henry as a good faith friendship gift, what do you think?"

Prompt: Do you have any bad habits you really need to break? What would it take for you to change them?

I am a procrastinator and that is a definite bad habit to break. I recently picked up smoking again, after ten years, due to stress. I hate the smell, taste, and overall appearance of smoking, but I'm stressed out. I have decided to lay them down again though because I have grandchildren now and they see me smoking and, like my children, saw me smoking and some of them started smoking.

I have bone spurs in my feet and other problems with my bones in my back and feet, so exercise is excruciating and so I get limited exercise. This means I am fat and this makes me so very sad. I want to exercise and I bought an elliptical, so I wouldn't have to walk on the thing. My feet just sit on the machine while my legs do the work. It works for me. Now if I can just lose the weight that walking on this thing promises me that I'll lose by walking or gliding on it.

Prompt: Write about times when you've felt good about your writing, such as when a great idea zipped into your mind. Now, look at what you have written, how do you feel. Would you save this for inspiration, later? Why or Why not.

When I was in my early twenties the poems just flowed from me like water from the faucet. Now, I can't get them to come no matter what I do and my writing sucks because I can't get this grammar and punctuation down. I had a stroke at twenty one and I have not been able to remember things anymore. I had a tough time getting through college, but I made it, but I sucked in English. I was an excellent writer, or so my professors told me, but I just could not get the punctuation down. I am taking the comma sense class here on WDC and I barely make it through and failed my third part. I am wondering what I am doing here. I am forty four and I can't even write a paragraph without having several issues with it.

Prompt: Who was your favorite first lady?

Lady Barbara Bush is because she reminds me of the Queen of England. She is so regal and poised. She is a true lady. She is 'everybody's grandmother' and she has keen wit. She is completely devoted to her husband whether he was right or he was wrong. She loved children and believed in educating our children and believed in creating libraries where everyone's child could go to learn for free. Because of the death of her daughter "Robin," from leukemia, the first lady is quoted in saying "Because of Robin, George and I love every living human more."

The piano because it can be played in any genre of music from rock n roll to soul, to religious music. It moves me like no other piece of musical equipment anywhere. I have watched grown men and women groove to the music of Elvis Presley and I've watched ballerinas dance across the stage on their toes to the music this instrument produces. It is in a league of its own.

Fingers can tiptoe, dance,
or prance over the keys
They can strum or drum,
make a or a melody
Sharps, Flats,
you name it,it plays it.

Would you rather be on Gilligan's Island or Survivor?

Gilligan's Island because it seemed like so much fun there. Survivor, you get money for if you win, but there is no fun in that. Gilligan was always in trouble and I'd like to hang with him for a day or two to see if I could get into some trouble myself. The professor was a handsome devil and I would like to give him a massage. The old couple were a hoot and the girls seemed as sweet as Texas tea. I loved the Captain as well. He seemed like a huge teddy bear.

Peter Rubin says, "The story is not what happens, the story is who happens too." By this he means, readers need to be engaged in the lives of the people they read about before the author thinks about the plot/story. Do you agree?

Which is more important having really interesting characters or a really exciting plot?

Interesting characters. I have read a many a books that had crappy plots, but great characters that I got invested in and stayed invested in and would not put the book down until I finished it because I was invested in their lives. I say invest in your characters every time.

Do you think First, Second or Third person makes the characters more realistic to your writing.

I am still new to the whole writing thing and I still get them mixed up when I am writing, so I am not the best person to be asking that question. I think for me it would be third person, but I am not quiet sure if I am right or not.

Last question, he indicates the hook is what makes your writing relevant. What do you think?

I'd say the hook has a lot to do with it, but sometimes just telling a good old fashioned story goes a long way. No guns blazing, murders, adultry, etc... Just telling a story or like a slave girl and her mistress in the Civil war. Sure it has guns in it, but not up front in the story. It is quite boring talking about two girls living in a house doing nothing while the slaves pick cotton and you are trained to be a mistress of your own home some day until the war changes everything that is... Anyway, it doesn't necessarly hook you right up front. Sometimes you have to invest some time into a book to find that golden nugget.

When is too much of something not a good thing?

Chocolate is good for you in small doses, but listen to this:

Theobromine and Caffeine
Chocolate contains the chemical substances theobromine and caffeine, which are stimulants. While theobromine affects the central nervous system less than caffeine, it stimulates the heart much more than caffeine. Both of these substances can temporarily increase energy, but if abused they cause sleeplessness, anxiety, tremors and restlessness.

Phenylethylamine (PEA)
Chocolate also contains phenylethylamine a chemical that the brain releases when we fall in love. However, it has been proven that phenylethylamine is quickly metabolized, and may not significantly affect the brain. But whenever it combines with dopamine in our brain, it does act as an antidepressant.
On the negative side, phenylethylamine may also cause headaches because it dilates vessels in the brain.

Chocolate can make you obese if you eat too much of it and will rot your teeth. It will give you acne and make your face oily. It is all from a bad diet and eating a lot of chocolate is having a bad diet. It all starts well and good, but can lead to a negative and bad diet. Simple things like eating a piece of pie can become bad if your slices become larger over time and it normally does if you let it gets away from you.

Prompt: When was the last time you dedicated a day to yourself? If you have, share the details and their effects on you at the end of the day. If you haven't, why not, and would you if given the chance?

I haven't had a spa day or anything like that. I have had my nails done and I always feel so fake afterwards because they look fake. I like them to look real when I get them, but I have tried out a few different styles because my daughter-n-laws or mom or someone like that will recommend it, but I never feel good about it afterwards. I need to take a day and just relax, do nothing, get a massage, my toes done, my nails done, my hair done, my eye brows and lip waxed, and anything else that might pop up.

The only thing that I have done that remotely comes close to having a day to myself is when I sat and did nothing all day long except read books and I was in heaven. That is a day to yourself there. If you are a writer, then you are a reader, and you understand what I am talking about.

We are all creatures of habits... what is your morning ritual? Tell us the first five things of a typical day. ( let's skip the morning necessity *Blush* )

I get up to my phone going off because that is my alarm clock and I take my morning medication. I make a glass of orange juice if I have the oranges and if I don't then I pour me a cup of juice. I then sit on the couch with a book in my hand or the remote or I get online and visit WDC until my medication kicks in. I have several issues that cause me to not to be able to move around very well in the mornings until my medication kicks in, so that is why I do just about nothing until it kicks in. After that, it depends on what is going on that day.

Prompt: “Becoming a writer is not a ‘career decision’ like becoming a doctor or a policeman. You don’t choose it so much as get chosen, and once you accept the fact that you’re not fit for anything else, you have to be prepared to walk a long, hard road for the rest of your days.” – Paul Auster Do you agree or disagree with this quote. If you have no opinion about this quote then write a story or a poem.

I agree with it. I agree that you are born to it or you have to work real hard for the rest of your life at it. I am one of those that feels the need to write, but I lack the tools (knowlegdge of grammar, punctuation, etc...). I am taking as many classes as I can and I am not doing as good a job in them as I had hoped I would have done, but I will continue to study for the rest of my life.

Do celebrity endorsements of particular products influence your decision to purchase and/or use them? Would you be more likely to lean toward a different brand than your usual if the company were to use a spokesperson more to your liking?

No. I try out different products and stick to those that work. It doesn't matter who is the spokesperson is for that brand.
