It was a long day, and it had lost one of itself... again. This was becoming tiresome. Death of parts it could grant, but losing parts? Unacceptable! Always a magical aura, then loss of self. Someone was separating bits of itself away, and it will find out who and why.
Est was a fairly new Shrin, formed when a group of year old Shir came together in the root of an old tree. It's mind had formed then and in the last five years it had held onto it's sense of self, and even managed to poach of a few new Shir to increase it's numbers and thus it's mind. It had built itself up to fifteen bodies, at least until recently. Now it was eleven. It knew of no other Shrin nearby, just un-bound Shir, and this wasn't poaching. It would recognize if someone was taking bodies from Est.
Two of itself were skirting it's boundary, close to the border with the hated fey. Those flighty creatures could unfortunately easily evade Est, and the few vague memories carried over through it's Shir from an old hive didn't help much. It had attempted to spin webs to catch them, but the fairies could easily spot it's webs and avoid them, and they were far smaller than an individual Shrin body, making it very difficult to sneak up on one without being seen, even at night. From overhearing some of the other speaking creatures nearby most seemed to think Fey were good eating, but Shrin had so far not managed to catch one! Infuriating!
One of it's sets of eyes noticed movement, and saw at first just a Fey, flitting through the trees, then a larger being walking alongside, almost as large as a Shrin body, if just as spindly as a Fey. Est had not seen a creature such as this before and wondered if it would taste as good as Fey? No, it should go with what it knew was food. If the Fairy kept talking with the creature Est could catch it... finally!
