A terminal for all blogs coming in or going out. A view into my life.
Started July 1st 2019 for contests, etc. as other blogs are filling up and have other purposes.

Ferry boat between Solvorn and Ornes across the Lustrafjord i Sogn og Fjordane.

I'm starting a new blog because
BOOK
L'aura del Campo  (13+)
Online journal capturing the moment and the memory of moments. A meadow meditation.

had over 1,200 entries and that was getting close to full. I don't want to trim it by deletion. I did that once, much to my dismay. Will be used more for poetry.

BOOK
Hoarfrosts from Hell  (GC)
Anything I'm not happy about or that I don't want in my main blog!

is still hidden from the public and will remain so. It's more personal and full of angst. Was used for 30DBC for May 2020 and now used for Blogville.

BOOK
Enga mellom fjella  (13+)
Enga mellom fjella: where from across the meadow, poems sing from mountains and molehills.

was full... until the number of entries was increased. A mixed blog, mostly stories.

I'll be linking to

Flash Fiction  (GC)
Short 300 word, more or less, "stories" .
#2190336 by Kåre Enga in Montana
is where I put my flash fictions. Maybe someday I'll figure it out and have enough good ones to publish. Ratings vary and some are hidden from view.

I've started an appendix (I no longer have one personally) to keep track of my Space Cadet journals for Space Blog. It's a work constantly under construction. Mind the mess.

Make a list of the top five most important virtues and why.

*Garlic* *Onion* *Vamp* *Eggplant* *Tomato*

Zooming with Zombies? No *Vamp*vamps*Vamp* only look dead at times. They are never ever really dead dead.

[Ajo *Garlic*] Name a favorite virtue.

[Thoom *FlowerW*] Kindness.

[Meadowlark *Bagr*] Inclusiveness.

[Bawang *Yinyang*] Good blood.

[indistinct] We're not talking lunch time ... please.

         [Bawang *Yinyang*] Okay. Cleanliness.

                   [Meadowlark *Bagr*] As in?

[Bawang *Yinyang*] Clean body, clean mind, clean soul and ... clean blood.

[various] *Laugh* *Shock* *Shock2* *Rolleyes*

[ Czeszniak *Bookstack*]. Generosity.

         [various voices] Cookies! Yeah, cookies!

[Ajo *Garlic*] Friendliness. I think Thoom is right about kindness and Meadowlark about inclusiveness but everyone here has been my friend. I can depend on you to be truthful and still supportive.

[Bawang *Yinyang*] Yep. Fangs are for real. No faking it.

[ Czeszniak *Bookstack*] And here are some virtuous gingerbread men I made this morning. Time to bite off their heads!

*Garlic* *Onion* *Vamp* *Eggplant* *Tomato*

Me: truthfully there are many virtues (not to be confused with values) and it's good to strive to be virtuous while realizing that everyone has their own struggles. I use https://virtuesproject.com/

Day 2 of being Awake:

mKoda didn't wake up. I will miss her. She was an engineer and seldom spoke much. She was alone, far from others of her kind.

Once I asked her about being young, like that awkward stage between childhood and adult.

She laughed. "We have so many stages, so many rituals and some stages are short or long for some. When I was [...] I felt stuck."

She obviously needed someone to listen at that stage. Would I have listened?

"The Elders accept that we kKuttaa need diversity. It's what helps us interact with others who are almost stranger than you." kKuttaa do not wink ... was that a wink?

"We are not a tourist hot spot. We're just too damn hot!" kKuttaa do not chuckle ... but believe me translated into Human the colors whirling in her eyes were definitely laughing.

"I like you. Four ears and one mouth. You listen well."

My turn to b.b.blush.

"We have little to trade, but the Elders encouraged me to leave and find my way, perhaps meet others like me. As much as they loved me there was no place for me in our societies. Believe me when I say this pained them deeply. We seldom travel. So I left and after visiting a few worlds realized that I'd never fit in. So I signed up on a starship ... and fell in love with the work and the emptiness and even the crew. I may be alone, but I've never felt lonely. And NO ONE ... I mean ... [in a whisper] no one here is 'normal'." I swear she looked harder into my eyes.

We talked some more but I'll always remember her parting wisdom that day:

"I will tell you the most profound lesson that the Elders taught me at every stage I went through, 'Love yourself so that others may love you too.'"

A Wing woke me up. Surprised at the stardate. A bit of a nap this time. There'll be a party in a few days to celebrate the 'new year'.

Time flows different when one travels between the stars. It washes over us like a planet's storms or fog. It cleanses. The Wings have been in charge for 147 days. Seems like a good night's dream to me.

Cook has been busy making restorative soups that 'don't taste bad' (his words). He tries so hard! So many different preferences. At least Kat is purring and that's always a good sign. Her dreams must have been tranquil.

We'll take this break. Having the entire crew awake makes it seem crowded. At least it will be a festive few days.

"Why can't they listen to experts?"

"Like you."

"Yes, like me."

I listen to the raised voices as 90210 and Cook intervene.

We're a starship of experts!

Too bad they didn't think of hiring a chef ... but I'll never say that out loud. If it weren't for Cook we'd be in far worse condition.

The Wings have made it clear that it has been a boring uneventful passage and that they only woke us up because it was time. In a couple weeks we'll be approaching a star system and they plan to be fast asleep.

Someone has decided to play music. An old tune about binary planets where one shines on the other. Sounds like a love song, the kind of embrace that's tranquil and soothing. 90210 is actually smiling. Kat is purring softly. Cook stops for a minute and closes his eyes as if he can see the music. The room quiets until the last note lingers then fades.

In 1969, Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon. Afterward, people commonly complained, “If they can put a man on the moon, why can’t they ______.” How would you finish that statement today? LISTEN TO EXPERTS

Do I boycott? Kinda.

At the moment I'm not doing business with two bakeries that are a block away.

My reason is simple. They both wanted customers to call in, place an order and pay with credit card. I realize that Gen Z might not understand so let me explain ... not everyone has a smart phone ... and there is this old fashion way of paying for things called cash. It really works! And it's not as easy to get hacked or have your account compromised when you pay with cash nor do you pay extra charges. It also keeps one from going into debt. When you run out of money you do without! Simple concept. One that your grandparents (my age) still can't cope with though. *Rolleyes* The more things change ...

So ... until I can walk up and order ... no.

That may have already happened by-the-way, but with no seating, and therefore no place to chat, why would I want a coffee when I can make it at home.

It does sound like I'm whinging but if a business cannot provide a service then they lose a customer.

But these 'draconian' rules don't apply everywhere. Outside the casino next door the semi-drunks are still spitting in each other's faces outside. (Inside they have to wear a mask.)

I'm leery of "boycotts" though. Too much is made of minor incidents or unproven incidents (especially in a gossipy neighborhood). I can only get so outraged before I ask is this worth my energy? If a company intentionally hurts me, my friends or others? (Looking at you Chicky-poo.) I will consider taking my business elsewhere.

I also prefer local over chains when it comes to food and beverages. But that's not a boycott as such. I see no need to go to Starbucks or McDonalds when we have perfectly good coffee and burgers made locally.

Mostly I'm boycotting people in general due to lies, self-centeredness and stupidity. There's no sign that that will change anytime soon.

Have you ever boycotted a company or product? If so, tell us the story. If not, what would a company have to do for you to boycott its products?

Describe your sense of humor. Is it dark, sarcastic, slapstick, silly, or something else? Do you have any favorite comedians? What always makes you laugh?

I'll answer this seriously, as myself.

N.o.t.h.i.n.g always makes me laugh.

Chuckle? Guffaw?

For sure, but I've been to MFA readings where everyone just giggles at every inside joke. And I'm left wondering ... why?

I also detest most 'funny' Hollywood movies. I prefer deep to shallow, real bittersweet to ha-ha-ha lies. I'm not fond of anything that portrays an America that only existed in someone's warped Pollyanna imagination; less so when it demeans people for laughs. No, I do not have the humor of a 12 year old boy. Even at that age I was serious. Maybe that's why I don't understand those who insist on saying, "America, Love it or Leave it." Maybe they believed those lies ... that everything was a joke that could be fixed by coming home to dinner on time to join mommy and daddy and sis. And all those cliche endings that were wrapped up neat and happy was how it was supposed to happen in "Real America." As if ... reality didn't exist. As if ... anything that couldn't be laughed at shouldn't exist.

I didn't like American Horror (let's be afraid of our own shadows) either or Let's Kill Everyone (let's be afraid of everyone else). Foreigners wonder about our paranoia and racist xenophobia? Look no further.

And all of this was served with a side dish of laughter.

So yes, I laugh, but not evey day over every little thing. I do watch some comedies ... like "Young Sheldon" if it's available when I fly. But a 1970's laughtrack? *Rolleyes*

Mostly, I'm naturally silly, but that's just the way I am on a good day.

The only thing humourous I wrote recently:

From Missoula with Love

When once an old man from Missoula
bought tickets for Hilo to hula
along came an illness
that threatened to kill us
and now he's stuck home with his moolah.

He shuffles alone in his slippers,
drinks cold coffee black for his jitters;
he dreams of a Kona
and cries out, Ramona!
if only to hula and kiss her.

Ramona grinds wheat by the kilo
then stretches and butters the phyllo
with stiletto at hand
twirls her gold wedding band
and longs for her lover in Hilo.

"From Missoula with Love (15 lines). It received an Honorable Mention in June's Humorous Poetry Contest. It's as funny as I get.

We approach another suspicious rock.

Wing Sheima has received a report that there's nothing living on it but the Landers want to take a look. She hands the ship over to Commander Tom. Another joke I'm told but as a Kla he just barks orders. Apparently one of the orders was to wake me up.

Quip: Wake me if there's anything exciting! I'm taking a nap.

90210 smiles: Me too.

Me: I need something to wake me up!

Cook comes by (when does he sleep?) and hands some sleepy-time tea to Quip and 90210. Whatever he gave me tastes vile and seems to wink at me. Cook just laughs. As do the others. *sigh*

o________________o ----------0O0O0---------- o________________o

Me: How shall I help, Commander?

Commander Tom: The Landers want you to join them. There's an interesting anomaly they want you to see before they disect it.

There's no oxygen so here I go again wrapped up like a ten day old slab of tuna.

Lander Gomo the Kla: I want you to look before anyone says anything to you. What do you see?

Me: More like what I don't sense at all. Wrapped up like this I can't smell, can't touch, can't hear. Do you hear anything?

Gomo: No.

Me: it looks like someone intended to settle here. But there's no oxygen! And these artifacts look far too Gqarian, and that one over there vaguely reminds me of Klingon designs. And this one [pointing to my left] is Vulcan. I swear. All of those species breathe oxygen. Any signs of sulfur? I don't see any.

Gomo: No.

Me: And what is that over there ...

We went towards it. Looked like a pod or coffin. It wasn't empty.

Me: Vulcan or Romulan?

Gomo: Yes. There's no signs of life, very little that anyone who came here lived here for long.

Me: That looks like an escape pod.

Gomo: There are 41 more.

Me: Not enough for a colony ... unless it wasn't meant to survive. This place is older than that box?

Gomo: Millennia older.

Me: An escape to a myth someone had heard about or a penal colony left without means to survive?

Gomo: We found this. [he hands me a tablet] Translated it say "Freedom or Die".

Me: They chose both. The sought freedom and died.

Gomo: You may be right. There are two bodies of your race, one of a time-traveler like Guinan, another a Vulch ... and a dozen Gqarians. We found remnants of Grass.

Me: So they didn't come here to die, but they did.

Gomo: And that's not all, but I'll have Commander Tom tell you the rest. You'll think more clearly when your body isn't stressed.

Me: Stressed?

Gomo: I'm a Xeno like you. I know the signs. Now go back to ponder on the ship.

o________________o ----------0O0O0---------- o________________o

Commander Tom: See these?

Me: More pods?

Commander Tom: Some look like they tried to leave; others look like they couldn't land. There are a couple hundred of them. What do you think?

Me: They chose freedom, from whatever I don't know. But they also chose death.

DO NOT BE AFRAID

The message instilled fear in everyone on the ship. The Medics treated those who felt the pain in their body. The Psychs did the best they could for those who were losing their mind.

There was no way to turn it off.

We had approached a large brown rock. No atmosphere. No signs of life. Looked like an asteroid.

"Maybe it's a ship disguised as a rock," the second in command suggested. "Not likely," Quip spoke up. As a Xeno-Mechanic he'd seen a few.

"Always butting in?"

Quip: "That's me." [I rolled my eyes. Here we go again] "Yes, it could be inhabited and maybe once it was. The inside is hollowed out. But it's no ship. Not going nowhere. Lost in space." [that got a chuckle]

"Cook, bring Quip some tea ... strong tea ... to shut him up!"

"Nope. Not shutting up. We've scanned everything, sent a probe. Nothing but relics, very old. It's abandoned, maybe a way-station once or a mining colony now mined out."

And then the message started. We tried to shield our ship and ourselves.

Phylym, a Psych, was the quickest to figure it out. "We must leave immediately," was all he said, holding his head.

The commander ordered an immediate departure. "5 minutes and we leave," he barked over all systems.

An hour later we were far enough away.

"What was that," the commander asked Phylym. "When Quip told me we weren't under attack it all made sense. We were attacking ourselves."

"How?"

"We all have shadows within. It's an impressive way to defend absolutely nothing."

Quip: "oh, I wouldn't say that. We have three harmless artifacts to puzzle over. That should keep the Historians busy until our next destination. They won't have time to bore us with the details of the wars of Zeta-Beta-Eta-whatever."

"Something to be thankful for."

[we all laughed]

Prompt: "What are we afraid of if not ourselves?" What do you think?

Cook woke me up again. 90210 wanted to have a chat. Since she's in charge I can forgo my nap. But I needed something stronger than soup to wake me up. Cook just shrugged and said, "you'll just go back to bed again and complain about not being able to sleep". He has a point.

90210: I'm not worried, but I needed to chat. What do understand about the Green Star?

Me: Kat knows better. Her people have a bitter history and Humans are her specialty.

90210: I know, but no one wakes Kat from her Kat-nap. You could die in her dreams.

Me: [laughter] A fate worse than Death itself... You're human so what don't you understand?

90210: I expect them to be swayed by compassion.

Me: Or logic, or rational behaviour. The humans I've known can be chaotic but like any other species they are capable of forming healthy connections and means of communication. These humans seem to have had it bred out of them.

90210: It could be that. It was hard to tune them out and so important that no one else could tune in. I can command a ship but not a planet of lunatics or a crew infected by their insanity.

Me: Kat chose well.

90210: Thank-you.

[sipping tea / sipping soup / lots of sipping]

90210: I needed to hear that. Not just from anyone, but from a fellow Xeno.

Me: You're a hero you know. The quiet kind that no one notices because there's no need to rise to the occasion if the occasion doesn't arise. Kat will tell you that you did well.

90210. She already knew when she handed control over to me. Not one ruffle in her fur. I'm always amazed by her. She said I'd do fine because she knew I would. All I had to do was make it happen. So I did.

Me: Ah, motivation. The fear of having to wake her up.

[we both laugh]

90210: There was that.

Personally: we can be anybody's hero on a given day. There's a misperception that heroes need to be larger than life. Also ... didn't know about 'edit points'.
