Rules for the Game of Life

Rules for the game of life,
simple steps for starters,
here’s how to avoid the strife
and never join the martyrs.

Do not rise and leave your bed,
keep opinions quiet,
try not to hear what sages said,
and run away from riot.

Right Away

Yes, I’ll do it,
just as soon as I possibly can,
but first I have to clear the decks
and get everything spick and span.

Hang on a mo though,
I did promise Uncle Joe
that I’d definitely visit him soon,
so you must wait till tomorrow.

Stop!

Creation is a funny thing,
it sticks and then it runs;
the trick to make it really sing
is knowing when it’s done.

Overworking will spoil the piece
and take it much too far,
lets inspiration wilt and cease
and underworking scar.

An apparently effervescent roulette wheel!

Faites vos Jours

I can tell you without preamble,
I have no desire to gamble;
my tastes lie in other directions
and my wishes in various sections.

The casino leaves me just cold
and, if I may make so bold,
I can say without any regret,
there’s no magic for me in roulette.

Oh Cinnamon

Oh cinnamon,
once a rare treat,
as time’s gone on,
it’s much too sweet.

Here in the States
it’s over-used,
the craving sates
and sweet tooth bruised.

Clayton Road 1954

A horse in a field,
there’s a thing
that digs deep to the memory
of a boy transplanted briefly
to a land both damp and grey,
on his way to an unfamiliar school,
hand in pocket searching
for the sugarlump for his friend.

A Blessing.

A June Croon

Oh, the merry month of June,
if it hadn’t been so soon,
I wouldn’t be so old,
if I may make so bold.

For then I would be born
on some much later morn,
the years they would be fewer,
and I, with them, much newer.

Upside Down

They lived happily ever after
though that may appear even dafter
than this tale which reaches its end
with story itself not yet penned.

Adventure’s not in the middle
it’s saved as sort of a riddle
and strangest in this silly rhyme
the ending’s once up on a time.

Line count: 8
Rhymed aabb
For Express It In Eight, 02.22.24
Prompt: Write an out-of-order poem.
Note: “Upon” is written as “up on” to force the reader to stick with the rhythm. It’s called poetic license.

It’s Only a Paper Moon

It’s only a paper moon
and all the world’s a stage
a firehose for the monsoon
and virtual the rage.

But you can keep the play today
the author’s not Old Bill
it doesn’t matter what they say
just take the devil’s pill.

Prompt: Take the phrase “It’s Only ___”, replace the blank with a word or phrase, and make that the title of your poem.

Cup

The cupped hands that hold fresh water
clear and cold from the stream
dripping with the gift of life
and special to each one of us
our personalised cup
that lifts the quenching liquid
sweet and limpid
to our lips.

Free verse
For Express It In Eight, 02.20.24
Prompt: Write a poem about a cup.
