An iron ring guards the way to the portal.

Gateway

A trap set most plain
in the path from the abyss,
the iron ring invites
unwary travellers on
with a glimpse of the shining portal
beyond.

Yet who will dare the sudden grip
of those jagged metal jaws?

Memory

As the day dies down
in the lingering twilight,
old age sits toying
with the pieces of life,
fragments of the jigsaw,
the puzzle of years,
as the sun goes down
and the picture’s complete.

A Basket

A tisket, a tasket,
I’ve lost my little basket,
so sang my father,
though he never went further
and I never learned,
or even discerned,
what caused his great loss
and made him so cross.

Haunted

The house is empty now,
drained of life and living,
the dark night filling the spaces
once bright with joy and laughter.

Now a shadow lingers on,
boards creak and cobwebs drape,
uneasiness guards shuttered lips,
and fear engulfs the soul.

Yo Ho Ho

“Aye, aye, my eye” I said
as the captain came on board,
bejewelled with golden thread
and ceremonial sword.

“Stand easy man,
I’m no better than you,
my name is Stan,”
he said as he eyed the crew.

Zero

Zero is to modern math
a burning flame, the one true path,
there was a time when we had no nought,
from India we had it brought.

Now the Romans are over the hill,
they never knew the wonders of nil;
the number of our nothings grows
until we’re swimming in a sea of dough.

Capgras Insurance Scheme

Capgras Insurance Scheme,
replacement of like for like,
it’s not so as you’d know
that this Johnny’s not your tyke.

He looks just the same,
in fact, he’s a double,
the only difference being
he’s demonstrably less trouble!

A surreal painting of butterflies and pancakes.

The Butterfly Ball

Tiddles disguised as a butterfly
attended the butterfly ball;
I should have warned and explained why,
they bake with pollen - that’s all.

Their pancakes are really petals,
not suitable fare for a cat;
the tea is made from a nettle,
and the flour is just flower and that’s that!

Leather

Leather belt
makes my midriff melt
leather couch
makes my legs go ouch
leather shoe
makes you all go ooh
leather life
is a sign of strife

for the cow at least
(it’s a useful beast).

River

The river is a wondrous thing,
it makes a ge-o-grapher sing,
that such a mighty, moving throng
of droplets joined in current strong
should start as little raindrops frail,
or snowflakes mild, or stinging hail,
united on this parchèd earth
to flowing symbol of rebirth.
