Sudden Noise

Your heartbeat drums loudly, thumping in your chest, pumping fiery currents through your veins. Your ears, nervous and deafened, hear nothing else but the rush of blood. Acting quietly, you slip the backpack from your shoulder and place it on the tabletop, resting the silvery device beside it. Unzipping the pack slowly, silently through the internal noise, you are about to transfer the prize inside when something pierces your eardrum from outside. You freeze until you know its source.
