PROMPT May 9th

Write about language - What languages do you wish you could speak? What’s the most pleasant sounding accent? What’s the funniest word in the English language (or your native language)?

English is my native language. I never gave the funniest word much thought. We could use the Mary Poppins word, but I really don't even want to try to spell all that out. Here is a good one for us writers, onomatopoeia. When I was a kid in school and we first learned about this word, a few of us kids got into trouble for making fun of the word. Lol We came up with a few different ways to make fun of it as you can only imagine.

What is an interesting language is medical terminology. That has got some doozies in it. If you ever get a chance, take a glance at a medical dictionary, you will see what I mean.

I have learned a few Spanish words. I don't know enough to carry on a full conversation, but am able to pick up on certain words as I hear people talking.
I wish I could speak it better. I guess I should start trying to learn more Spanish words.

I wish I knew Greek, Hebrew, and Latin to get a better understanding of the Bible and related literature. It would be interesting to be able to read it in its original language.

I have always liked hearing the Australian accent. It is very similar to the English accent. A French accent may be a close second favorite.

If I had to listen to a language with no interpreter, the Japanese language is interesting to listen to. My roommate and I used to watch the Ninja Warriors competitions before they had an American Ninja Warrior show. I always found that interesting and kind of comical to listen to as you could hear the changing emotions in the commentator’s voice.

Prompt:
Describe Hell.

Answer:
Hell is not a place you want to go. It is designed as a place for punishment for the devil and all his followers. The Bible often refers to it as a lake of fire. It is a place of eternal torment and torture.

Write about your favorite outdoor activities to do in the summer. Are there any activities you haven’t done that you want to try?

I love to go swimming and sliding down water slides in the summer. I would love to go to a water amusement park. I have to be careful though because I sunburn so easily.

I love to go on walks outdoors. While I am walking, I love to take pictures of nature that I see along the way. I love to appreciate the flowers, birds, trees, and other plants and things I see. I love looking up at the sky. There is so much to be thankful for and beauty to be seen.

If I had more money, I would love to go on various vacations or trip to see and experience everything possible. It can be fun experiencing new things.

There's dialogue and there's monologues. Dialogue is conversation between people whereas monologues tend to be one person speaking similar to a speech or a rant. Let's take this opportunity to discuss your name. What makes it unique? Is it a family name? Is there a story behind? Have fun, be engaging.

My name is an interesting one and fun. My mother’s paternal grandmother was named Marvilla Adaline. My Dad’s mother’s name was Mildred Ruth. My parents named me Marvilla Ruth, after 2 awesome women. I wish I knew where my great-grandmother got the name Marvilla. No one else in the family has had it. You can’t say her parents didn't know how to come up with names. She had a sister named Gertilla, and they weren't twins. 🤷‍♀️ Marvilla in Spanish (an alternate spelling, Maravilla) means marvelous. The Biblical meaning of Ruth is friend or friendship. Thus my username, Marvelous Friend, is the actual meaning of my real name. 😊

. Share a regret that you have.

My regret is a bad relationship I was in for 3 years too many. This was one of those relationships where if it didn't kill you, it makes you stronger. Fortunately, it didn't kill me. I became stronger and learned a lot from it the hard way. The man was emotionally and verbally abusive. I think he was too afraid to get physically abusive with me when he found out one day that I will fight back.

I loved my dad, but he had a temper and attitude. When I was a teenager, his idea of discipline was to hit me, choke me, get me on the floor and repeatedly hit me wherever he could find a good place to do so. When I got old enough to move out of my parents house as an adult, I swore to myself that no man would ever beat on me like that again, at least not without a good fight.

My dad finally stopped beating on me when I told him that as an adult, I would file criminal charges against him if I had to. I didn't want to, but I would. He believed me. Besides, as a preacher, he certainly didn't want that.

Anyway, the man decided he was going to throw a set of keys at me and hit me with them, and was surprised when I threw the keys back at him and nailed him with them and made it perfectly clear that it would not be tolerated. I told him that he may be stronger than me but I wouldn't go down without a fight. He was a bit afraid to push his luck after that.

I don't like to have to be that way or for that side of me to come out. I am afraid of that part of myself. I have had to let the monster out so to speak at times though because unfortunately not every will treat you right. My big fear is that one day I will have to let that side out and will really harm someone to defend myself or someone I love. I am usually good at restraining myself for the most part, but I have had a few close calls. I am afraid to fight not because I am afraid of getting hurt, but because I am afraid of the damage I can do if I go into a blind rage. I will not fight unless I mean it. I could be angry enough to kill. Maybe I should not have shared that on here, but that goes along with my regrets in life. This is one of my weaknesses in my flesh. May God help me to control it.

Convince us your Mom is the best Mom ever. At what point in your life, did you realize how unique your Mom is?

I can't say my mom was the best mom. She even admitted that herself. I knew she loved me and I loved her. However, we had a close but strained relationship. Unique, my mother was definitely that. I probably realized it when I was about 8 and saw her and my dad arguing. I thought at that point, I was acting more mature that she was, and she punished me for throwing fits. I honestly think she had some undiagnosed mental issues. I won’t go into detail here on that. I loved my mother though, fiercely. The relationship we had is hard to explain. I don't feel she understood me, but I understood what made her tick. I didn't always agree, but I understood why she did some of the things she did based upon her belief system and experiences she had told me about. She could be very sweet one moment and a hell-cat on wheels the next for lack of a better way to explain it. My mother was unique to herself. I don't know how else to explain it without getting too personal here.

For my blog

Take UP Your Cross

Prompt:
Write about who God is to you.

Answer:
God is the creator of everything, Heaven and Earth. He is all powerful and everywhere. There is no place I can go to escape his Awesome presence, not do I want to. He is the perfect picture of love, full of mercy and grace. He is kind, forgiving, humble, long-suffering, meek, and righteous. He is to be adored and feared at the same time. He is a jealous God. He wants all of my love, reverence, and devotion. And why shouldn’t He get it? In reality, I want that from Him. He is able to give it even though He has many children. He loves us all equally. He does not discriminate or chose favorites. He makes sure everything works out for my good, even the worst things that happen in my life. He sent His Son Jesus to pay the penalty for my sins so I could have a relationship with Him. Jesus willingly sacrificed himself for me. Then God sent the Holy Spirit so I would not be left alone and comfortless. He provides all my needs. I could probably go on and on. He is my everything. I love my God, and He loves me. 😊

PROMPT May 7th

In your entry today, write about dreams. Do you dream often, or do you rarely remember your dreams? What is the strangest or most memorable dream you have ever had?

Now this is a subject I can write about. I have a lot of dreams. I am a very vivid dreamer. I dream in color. I sometimes even hear music in my dreams like the background music played in a movie or TV show. My dreams are often very animated and realistic. I have had many memorable dreams. Here is one of them I wrote about recently.

#2248289 by Marvelous Friend

I have had prophetic dreams. I recently had a dream that told me it was time to take a stand in regards to a situation I was facing. I have had dreams tell me when someone died or was going to die. I have had dreams that told me how to reunite with people from my past.

I usually have strange dreams after I swallow Tylenol and go to sleep. One of the strangest dreams I had, was of being in a very long race on an indoor track with other people slithering around like snakes.

Scripture writing - 2 Corinthians 10:3-6

Scripture:
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

Observations:
Verse 3- our battle is a spiritual one.
Verse 4- Therefore our weapons are spiritual too and powerful.
Verse 5- Our weapons help us stay in line with God's will for us.
Verse 6- We should be ready to defend our faith and God's righteousness at all times.

Application:
We have powerful spiritual weapons to fight the hardest spiritual battles to keep us in line with God's will for our lives. We should always be ready to fight the good fight.

Prayer:
Dear God,
Keep us and guide us as we fight the good fight of faith. Teach us to use our weapons well and to be always ready to take a stand for you.
In Jesus's Holy name,
Amen

“At last came the golden month of the wild folk-- honey-sweet May, when the birds come back, and the flowers come out, and the air is full of the sunrise scents and songs of the dawning year.” ― Samuel Scoville Jr

and write your reports (entry).

This is a case where actions speak louder than words. We need to be aware of what actually matters most. When you really think about it, true love doesn't pursue what can be gained for one’s self. It pursues relationship and the well being of another person.

Use these words in your entry today: discourage, bark, mountain, hard, merchant, diagram, serve, and, stable.

I guess I will have to write more than one sentence for this one. Lol The Merchant drew out his diagram for his plan to serve his customers. He could hear the dogs bark as he thought it over. It seemed like a stable plan. Hopefully the hard track up the mountain did not discourage business.

Take UP Your Cross

Prompt:
Should we point out other people's sin to them? Why or why not?

Answer:
I have not been one to like pointing the finger at anyone. Well, at least I haven't since I was a child. 😊 However, the more I read the Bible, I am beginning to think we should let someone know when we believe them to be in error out of love for them but with a humble attitude. Our sin effects other people rather we realize it or not. Our thoughts and actions, good or bad has a ripple effect.

I can't think of the exact chapter right off the top of my head, but I have been reading in Leviticus lately. It speaks of someone witnessing a sin and not telling about it, then it became sin for them also. Ouch! We must be careful what we witness, what we say, and how we say it.

PROMPT May 6th

Write about a community service or volunteer experience you’ve had in your life that made an impact on you.

The volunteer experience that impacted my life the most was when I volunteered to clean a church weekly. I would get together with a couple other ladies and we would all do a thorough cleaning of the Church building. We would all work at it until it was all done. I found it to be enjoyable since all of us ladies had time to talk to each other while we were working. I always had a sense of accomplishment when it was done. We kept that building looking good. I will never forget the fellowship and comradery we had with each other. I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

The history of postage stamps is fascinating. Do you remember how much the first postage stamp cost you used to mail a letter? Did you write a letter or mail a card? Have you ever collected stamps?

Postage stamps were 25 cents when I began to use them. I mailed cards and letters both. I have never collected stamps but I knew someone who did once.

This Is What Heaven Means To Me.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=eIydtsFBiJ8&feature=share
This song is an oldie, but a goodie. I was listening to this song last week, and I began to think about it.

Write about what Heaven means to you.

Answer:
It is a place I look forward to going when I physically die. My body will die, but my soul is destined to spend eternity with Jesus. Some days, if I spend too much time thinking about it, I get a bit homesick for my heavenly home. I know Jesus is preparing a place for me there. I wonder what it will look like. We know there are streets of gold and a crystal sea in Heaven, and pearly gates. I am sure it is beautiful with many colors pleasing to the eyes. I will get to see loved ones who have gone before me, and there will be no more pain or tears. It is a place filled with only love all the time. Sometimes I can hardly wait to go there.

PROMPT May 5th

If your job gave you a surprise seven day paid break to rest and recuperate, what would you do with those seven days?

This is a difficult question for me to answer because I am not working right now. When I did work, I would probably take a couple days to get caught up on house work. I would take at least one or two days to rest, and the rest I would probably do things I had been wanting to do but just hadn't had time to do.

Prompt:
Who is your favorite character in the Bible? What is your favorite story?

Write about your answer to these two questions and tell us why they are your favorite.

Answer:
I have several favorites. It is hard to pick just one. I guess if I had to pick just one aside from Jesus because we know the whole Bible is all about him, I would choose Solomon. When I was a kid, it was David and the story of David and Goliath. Now I guess you could say my favorite story is the story of Joseph.

2. Walk 30 minutes a day for a minimum of three days.

3. Go grocery shopping.

4. Rest a little.

Scripture writing - 1 John 4:1-6

Scripture:
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

Observations:
Verse 1- Don't believe everything you hear. Test it.
Verse 2- Every spirit that confesses Christ is come in flesh is of God.
Verse 3- Every spirit that does not confess Christ came in the flesh, is not of God.
Verse 4- We are of God, and they have already been defeated. Greater is the Spirit of God that is in us than the spirits in the world.
Verse 5- They are of the world. The world hears them because they speak the same things.
Verse 6- We are of God. God hears us. Anyone not of God does not hear us.This is how we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Application:
We need to be able to discern between the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. These verses tell us how to tell them apart.

Prayer:
Dear God,
Thank you for giving us discernment. Thank you for never leaving us alone. Let us always remember to test the spirits so we know what is truth and avoid confusion.
In Christ's name,
Amen

Prompt: Here’s John Steinbeck describing a sunset in The Grapes of Wrath:
“A large drop of sun lingered on the horizon and then dripped over and was gone, and the sky was brilliant over the spot where it had gone, and a torn cloud, like a bloody rag, hung over the spot of its going. And dusk crept over the sky from the eastern horizon, and darkness crept over the land from the east.”

What do you think of sunsets and how would you describe one?

I love to watch the sun set. When I us little girl my grandmother would take me out on the front porch with her so we could watch the sun set together. I don't think I could ever tire of it. Sunsets are beautiful, and each one is unique.

What smell or sounds brings back great memories of your childhood?

The smell of biscuits cooking in the oven brings back some good childhood memories. My dad loved biscuits and gravy for breakfast. So many times, I can remember waking up to mom pounding a can of biscuits on the door of the kitchen to open them. A few minutes later I could smell them cooking. I could hear the coffee pot whistling and mom stirring gravy in her cast iron skillet. She made her own gravy from scratch. I enjoyed eating biscuits and gravy with my dad in the mornings.

Scripture writing - 1 John 3:7-10

Scripture:
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

Observations:
Verse 7- The person that lives righteously is righteous.
Verse 8- The person that willfully sins is unrighteous. God destroys the work of the devil through Jesus Christ.
Verse -9 If you are born of God, you put sin out of your life because God is in you.
Verse 10- This is how we know the difference between the children of God and the children of the devil.

Application:
You must not only repent of your sins to be saved, you must turn from them too. This can get confusing for some people. We aren’t saved by our works, but I still have to change my behavior or I am destined for Hell? What? Your actions tell what you really believe in your heart. If you were forgiven a $10,000 debt, would you not want to change your behavior so you didn't run that debt up again? The wages of sin is death. If I am forgiven of something worthy of death, do I want to continue the behavior that will cause me to face the death penalty again? Do I not want to do what the person who saved my life asked me to do? This is how it is with Salvation.

Prayer:
Dear God,
May people come into a relationship with you through my writing. May they develop a better relationship with you if they already have one. May my words be educational and edifying. May people’s eyes be open to the truth.
In Jesus's name,
Amen

Prompt “Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky.”
Khalil Gibran, Sand and Foam
What do you think about this quote, and in what ways life is like a tree?

The roots are not usually seen, and our reasons for doing things are not always known. There are several branches, and we can tell several stories and experiences. Trees grow with time, and so do we. They have to bend with the wind or be broken. Sometimes they can be broken and still stand. We need to be flexible sometimes, and sometimes we can still go on living even though we are broken.

PROMPT May 1st

Write about one (or more) of your creative idols. Who do you look up to? Whose work are you most inspired by? Why?

Wow! This is a tough subject for me. I haven’t thought about it much lately. Two of my favorite authors are Gilbert Morris and Karen Kingsburry. I have others that I like very well too. I like reading things by C S Lewis and Stormy Omartian. Each author has their unique style and reason for liking them. My favorite genre is Christian fiction. I also enjoy reading religious and self-help books. I will read other genres too. I like variety. It depends on what kind of mood I am in. I have been concentrating more on writing than reading lately. I also love reading the Bible.

Musically, my favorite singer is Reba McEntire. She is also from Oklahoma. Again I like variety. One day, I may listen to country music. The next day, I may listen to 80’s pop. The next day, I may listen to Gaithersburg gospel music and the next, I may listen to singers like Michael W. Smith. I may even listen to classical or instrumental music too. Again, it depends on my mood and what I am doing at the time. I also have my go-to funny songs when I need a laugh or pick me up, such as the Ray Stevens’ songs.

Scripture writing - 1 Corinthians 10:12-14

Scripture:
12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

Observations:
Verse 12- Like Peter when the cock crowed 3 times, he thought he was ready to die for Christ, instead he denied him. We must be careful that we don’t slip up.
Verse 13- God only allows you to experience temptation you can handle. Every temptation you experience is common and happens to other people too.
Verse 14- avoid idolatry like the plague.

Application:
Pride comes before the fall. Don’t think you won’t ever be tempted, but when you are tempted, God will provide a way of escape. Stay away from idolatry.

Prayer:
Dear God,
Thank you for providing a way for us to escape temptation. Thank you for giving us tools and a way to stand against evil. Help us to remain humble and dependent upon you.
In Jesus’s name,
Amen

a poem about serendipity. What do you think? Do you have serendipity? Tell us about it.

When I look up the definition of serendipity, it says it has to do with things turning out good by chance. I can’t say I believe in things happening by chance. God has a good plan and purpose for our life. All things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to his purpose. Well, maybe in a way, With that thought in mind, Christians are guaranteed an entire life of serendipity. Interesting thought.

Can beauty be found in chaos? How do you describe chaos? How do you describe beauty?

I believe it can. Chaos is everything that can go wrong will go wrong (tragedy and destruction) and un-organization. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Each person interprets their own I think. To me, beauty is extremely pretty or something very good.

Here are a couple examples of what I am talking about. If you think about the chaos surrounding a woman giving birth. That is a beautiful thing because a new life has begun. A tornado can be beautiful, but the end result is chaos from its destruction. As a Christian, I believe the beauty of Salvation came from the chaos of Christ’s death on the cross. As you can see, these are examples of what I believe to be beauty coming from chaos.

Take UP Your Cross

Prompt:
Judges 21:25
In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

What does it mean to do what is right in your own eyes? Is this something you do personally?

Answer:
To me, this is referring to self-righteousness. There probably wasn't any government in that time and area. These people did what they personally thought was right which could vary from person to person. You can be doing what you think is right and a lot of good deeds, but if they are outside of God's will for you, you are committing sin. This is why this verse is in a negative context.

I am sure we have all been guilty of this at some point in our lives. It is something I try to avoid doing now that I am aware of it. In the verses yesterday, they say that in all our ways we are to acknowledge God and he will direct our paths and to lean not to our own understanding.

Scripture writing - Romans 15:5-7

Scripture:
5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7 Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

Observations:
Verse 5- God is a God of peace and consolation. He wants us all to be united through Jesus Christ.
Verse 6- This glorifies God.
Verse 7- receive others the way God receives you.

Application:
God wants us to be at peace and console one another. He wants us to be united together for his glory.

Prayer:
Dear God,
Thank you for your mercy and grace. Help us to to receive each other like you received us. Help us to be at peace with one another for your glory and to truly walk in your image and example.
In Jesus’s name,
Amen

Tell us about a special place and moment in your life.

One of my most cherished childhood memories was of my Dad’s mother pushing me in my backyard tree swing and singing “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” to me while I swang. My Dad had tied a rope to a big tree branch and placed a board he had fitted for it across the bottom for a seat. I loved that old home-made swing. I spent many hours in that tree swing while I was growing up. After I became an adult, the rope finally rotted and fell apart.

If you were to prepare dinner for the President and First Lady, what would you prepare? Would you be the host or let someone else be? Would you spring for table decorations for the table or leave it as is?

I would not spend extra money to decorate. I would probably make everything look as nice and neat as possible. I would be honest and I would continue to be myself. I would treat them like an honored guest rather I like the president or not. I would give them the respect and their security the respect the title deserves. I would prepare a nice meal with desert and some iced tea to go along with some southern hospitality. I am no celebrity and even if I was I will be myself. It is too difficult to be and maintain someone you are not. I know because I am a preacher’s kid. I will not play the pretend game just to be accepted. I am accepted for who I am or not at all.
