When news paper screams of near misses , it is definitely not the way it is projected. Enjoy this old story ,it will refresh memories of seniors and Youngsters are definitely going to enjoy it. Of Course you will also know about B-52 Stratofortress .

[TCAS- Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System]
TCAS encounter With B-52 Stratofortress*

I had a TCAS encounter with a B 52, and I have never seen a Bigger SOB. My story for you,

I thought I would share an encounter I had with a B-52 while flying a B744 from Mumbai to Paris. I am sharing this event because it reinforces the effect of following SOPs and the value of Sim Trg. This is my account of the event.

We had got airborne from Mumbai at dawn just as the sun was beginning to lighten the Eastern horizon. The load was 470 persons on board including infants and crew. The co pilot had been sent back for rest in the bunk, since he had become a new Dad and we urged him to take the first slot to sleep. We are a three man crew comprising of two Commanders and one First Officer, so that at any time there would one one Commander at the controls when one went back to rest.

My Second Commander was seated on my right. It was an hour or so after take off and we were approaching the Bombay- Muscat FIR where Mumbai Radio hands us over to Muscat Radio. We were over the Arabian Sea, with water below us as far as you could see in any direction. The sun was competing in speed with us and winning in the race, having an overtake of almost our ground speed of 500 knots. We were not under positive Radar Control being too far out sea. We were in HF RT contact with Mumbai and were about to change over to Muscat Radio.

My Second Commander (Capt Rajul Bhagatwala) who was on watch, suddenly alerted, "Reciprocal Traffic, 20 miles range, same level." We both went into full alert. I peered into my Screen and sure enough there was this traffic heading towards us as indicated by the Traffic Collision Avoidance System ( TCAS ). The intruder was about 20 miles away, almost head on and closing in real fast. I called for the second commander to put on all the Ac lights and see if he could establish visual contact. I said I was going head down to monitor the 'Intruder' and take appropriate avoiding action when commanded by the TCAS computer.

At a combined crossing speed of over 1000 knots we were 60 seconds from impact. The tricky thing here is to sit down and do nothing till the TCAS computer commands you to do so. No doubt the two TCAS computers, mine and the intruder's were busy 'Talking' to each other to decide who would be controlling TCAS of the two and what the escape maneuver should be. I peered up and I could see a Qantas A 340 just above me going in the same direction and 2000 feet above. He had been there ahead of me since level out and I was overtaking him since my cruise speed was 0.86M while he was doing only 0.78M.

I got my first warning from the TCAS, "Traffic, Traffic". Now the tricky part is to not take any evasive action till the computer tells you to, and that happens in a case like this, about 30 seconds from impact. So you sit like a moth attracted to a flame, unmoving. I had already called out for no action till RA ( Resolution Advisory ) and then follow the TCAS command. Sure enough like the book, it came at around 8 miles and, 30 seconds from impact. "Descend Descend", was the call.

I disconnected the Auto Pilot and Auto Throttle and gently followed the computer command into a descent. At 4 miles, "CONTACT" was the call from the right seat. "Its has eight engines and all are smoking black." I looked up as I had achieved safe separation and I saw him flash by 1 O'clock to 7 O'clock all eight engines spewing black smoke. "B-52" I called out. Our vertical separation as we crossed was 400 feet on the TCAS. It was just the 'Boys' going back to Diego Garcia after having bombed the Tora Bora hills in East Afghanistan on a round trip. He must have had us on his Mil radar but turned on his civil TCAS only around 20 miles to warn us on TCAS. His computer must be programmed to make the other guy take avoiding action as far as possible. He was at the wrong height for his track which was 160 Degrees or so and we were on a track of 330, hence the conflict of flight paths. But that is the advantage of being the only Super Power in the World.

Back in the cabin they had just finished the Breakfast Service and were serving Tea and coffee when we had this RA. I called to find out the cabin status. The In Flight Supervisor came up to the fight deck and said that no one had felt a thing and not a drop of tea or coffee had been spilled. I am not saying this to give myself a pat on the back for smooth flying, but to emphasize that when the Breaking News screams, "250 passengers had a miraculous escape when two Ac had a near miss", it is over sensationalizing a controlled situation, though such a situation should not have happened. In closing, the TCAS gives you a command which needs a max of 2g to respond. So There is no panic, only self discipline required.

You can't fool a pilot though. There were two pilots below in the cabin traveling as passengers who immediately felt the Auto Pilot going off , felt a few degrees of bank come on and the Ac descending. They came up to the cockpit a few minutes later to ask if the Auto Pilot had tripped.

Lessons learned

1. Similar TCAS drills are part of Routine training for all of us. If it works in the Sim it will work 100% in real threat situations.

2. SOPs for such events are laid down and if followed meticulously, it works.

3. Knowledge of the Ac systems involved, coupled with the SOPs provides the required margin of safety and clear cut decision making

4. No sense of fear or apprehension, since you know what to do. No confusion whatsoever.

In this situation, both Capt Bhagatwalla and I were crystal clear on what to do. There was no fear or panic. Voices were cool, calm and collected. There was no sense of fear what so ever only the supreme confidence of what action was required. All these drills had been done a hundred times on the Sim. If it had worked there it would work now, and it did.

In closing I leave this message for you, we survived that day only because the SOPs and Sim training had assured us that if followed we would survive.
It gave us the confidence to do so. We did it and survived; so will you. My apologies if I was long winded.

PS Since then I have always had a healthy respect for a B 52 and i sure do not want to get closer than that in the air.

*18 Things You Never Knew About The B-52 Stratofortress*

It's big. It's ugly. And it's one of the most adaptable aircraft flown in the past 60 years.

1) The B-52's first flight was April 15, 1952 - over 69 years ago.

2) The B-52 was designed to carry nuclear weapons during the Cold War, but it has only carried conventional ordnance in combat.

3) There were huge leaps in aviation happening when the B-52 was being designed, and it went through 6 major redesigns during the 5 year design period. The YB-52 pictured below was the second-to-last major redesign.

4) A B-52A was used to carry the North American X-15. The X-15 achieved the record for fastest manned powered aircraft, with a speed of Mach 6.72.

5) There have been 744 B-52s built, but currently there are only 85 in active service, with 9 in reserve.

6) The B-52 can carry up to 70,000 pounds of ordnance, or the equivalent of 30 fully-loaded Cessna 172s.

7) Production ended in 1962, which means the youngest B-52 is 59 years old.

8) The jet has a unique ejection system; the lower deck crew eject downward.

9) The B-52 is expected to serve until the 2040s. That's over 90 years of service.

10) In 1964, a B-52 configured as a testbed to investigate structural failures flew through severe turbulence, shearing off its vertical stabilizer. The aircraft was able to continue flying, and landed safely.

11) The navigator and radar navigator sit in the lower deck of the aircraft. These are the two seats that eject downward.

12) To comply with the SALT II Treaty requirements, cruise missile-capable aircraft had to be identifiable by spy satellites. To comply, the B-52 "G" models were modified with a curved wing root fairing.

13) Early models had cabin temperature problems; the upper-deck would get hot, because it was heated by the sun, while the navigation crew would sit on the cold fuselage floor.

14) In 1961, a B-52G broke up in midair over Goldsboro, NC. Two nuclear bombs on board were dropped in the process, but didn't detonate. After the bombs were recovered, the Air Force found that five of the six stages of the arming sequence had been completed.

15) In 1972, B-52 tail-gunner Albert Moore shot down a MiG-21 over Vietnam. It was the last recorded bomber-gunner to shoot down an enemy aircraft.

16) After the Soviet Union fell in 1991, 365 B-52s were destroyed under the START treaty. The aircraft were stripped of usable parts, chopped into 5 pieces with a 13,000 pound steel blade, and sold for scrap at 12 cents per pound.

17) During Operation Desert Storm, B-52s delivered 40% of the weapons dropped from the air.

18) Currently, B-52s cost $70,000 per flight hour to operate. And while they might be ugly, they're still a pretty amazing and adaptable aircraft.

As of June 2019, 58 are in service, 18 in reserve, and about 12 in long-term storage

"I hired a plumber to help me repair an old farmhouse.
He already had a rough and tiresome day.
* a flat tyre
* his electric drill fault
* his old car broke down.
* his tiffin was spoilt
* he lost his wallet
* his bank was calling for loan repayments

In all the tension and stress he finished my repairs.

Since his car broke down, I drove him home. While I drove him home, he sat silently, but I could mark his agony and restlessness.

On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family.

As we walked toward the front door, he paused at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands and closed his eyes.

When the door opened, he was smiling and happy. In seconds he underwent an amazing transformation.

He hugged his two small children, gave his wife a firm hug, laughed, and never even slightly made them feel the troubles that he had encountered that day.

I was astonished and curious. Seeing my inquisitive eyes he said, “Oh, that's my Trouble Tree. My best friend. My trouble carrier for the night”.

He replied. "I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing's for sure. Those troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home and ask God to take care of them. Then in the morning I pick them up again.”

He smiled and shared a secret. He said, “when I come out in the morning to pick 'em up, there aren't nearly as many as I remember hanging there the night before !!!

*Life may be a burden of worries, but there is a way to keep our loved ones untouched from these worries.*

Time will heal every wound.

Whoever is tensed today, look for a tree before you reach home! Hang your worries there! 🌳
Cheers 😃🎺🐢🐢🚴🏻‍♂️

Teacher addresses a student and asks: “How many kidneys do we have?"
“Four!", The backbencher student responds.
“Four? Haha,” The teacher was one of those who took pleasure in picking on his students' mistakes and demoralizing them.

“Bring a bundle of grass, because we have a donkey in the room," the teacher orders a front bencher.
“And for me a coffee!”, the backbencher student added.

The teacher was furious and expelled the student from the room.

The student was, by the way, a famous humorist namely Aparicio Torelly Aporelly (1895-1971), better known as the "Baron de Itararé".

On his way out of the classroom, the student still had the audacity to correct the furious teacher:
"You asked me how many kidneys‘ *we have*. "We have four: two of mine and two of yours. *‘We have’* is an expression used for the plural. Enjoy the grass".

In February 1983 as a student of Class VII D of The Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi as *Captain Arvind Vikram Singh, Shaurya Chakra* sat in the majestic Raina Auditorium listening attentively to a Lieutenant General of the Indian Army deliver a talk on the life as an Officer in the Indian Army, AV as he was affectionately called by his classmates, took a firm resolve to join the Indian Army.

Army life was not new to AV as his father Lieutenant Colonel Vijay Singh was from the Madras Regiment and he had travelled across the country staying in different cantonments where ever his father was posted. However that talk by a serving Lieutenant General of the Indian Army in uniform with full regalia, had AV choose the calling of his life.

AV was the only child of his Parents and had a distinguished lineage . Apart from his father being an Army Officer, his mother was a teacher and a social worker too.

AV was a bespectacled soft spoken and a bright student with a pleasing demeanour who was part of the School Volleyball team. After passing Class XII in First Class as part of the Class of 1988 of The Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi, AV cleared the eighth toughest exam of the world, the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination. AV reported to NDA Khadakwasla in June 1988 as part of the 80 NDA Course. He was allotted Foxtrot Squadron.

AV excelled in the three years training in NDA and was part of the Foxtrot Squadron Volleyball Team. On passing out from NDA in June 1991, AV reported for the last one year pre-commissioning training to the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He was allotted Keren Company.

On 13 June 1992, after an impressive Passing Out Parade as part of the 90 Regular Course, Second Lieutenant Arvind Vikram Singh was pipped by his proud Parents. AV was commissioned in 2 Garhwal Rifles. Garhwal Rifles is a famous and a decorated Regiment of the Infantry.

AV topped the Young Officers Course in the Infantry School, Mhow and was awarded the Best Student Award. Thereafter in the Commando Course in Junior Leadership Wing, Belgaum, AV yet again topped the Course and was awarded the Best Student Award once again.

In just two years, AV won the heart of every Officer and Jawan of the Battalion because of his honest, impartial and fair approach. The Battalion was located in the Kashmir Valley which was a highly terrorist prone area.

On the night of 22-23 May 1994, to check the movement of terrorists who were moving during the hours of darkness, AV volunteered to lead an ambush on track Palhalan-Wusan Khul. The move to the ambush site was completed at 2130 hours on 22 May 1994 in total stealth and the troops waited in silence to spring the ambush.

On 22 May 1994 at 2230 hours suspicious movement of three persons was observed from the direction of Village Palhalan. Captain Arvind Vikram Singh being the Commander of the Ambush Party, displaying calm courage and nerves of steel, let the three persons come to the centre of the ambush and exhibiting utter disregard to personal safety challenged them. The three persons opened fire and AV Singh killed one of the three terrorists. The other two terrorists lobbed grenades and opened fire with automatic weapons but the brave AV Singh and his team captured one terrorist alive.

The apprehended terrorist was identified later as a dreaded Company Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen. Two AK-56 rifles, six magazines, one grenade and 147 rounds were recovered in this ambush.

On 03 June 1994, Lt Arvind Vikram Singh was promoted to the rank of Captain.

About a month later, after conducting operations in Village Hayanat at 1830 hours on 07 July 1994, the Battalion moved tactically to cross Indus River having a span of 400 meters with three prominent water channels, the intervening portion of the river bed being dry. At about 1920 hurs on 07 July 1994 while crossing the Indus River over an improvised three feet wide wooden bridge, Rifleman Digamber Singh lost his balance and fell into the fast flowing current of the River Indus.

Captain Arvind Vikram Singh displaying exemplary courage with total disregard to personal safety and without a second’s hesitation jumped in the torrential current of the river Indus to save his Company Jawan.

AV negotiating through huge boulders fought the ominous walls of crashing water and displaying sheer dogged determination managed to grab hold Rifleman Digamber Singh and tried to bring him to the safety of the river bank but himself got swept away in doing so and made the Supreme Sacrifice of his life in the performance of his duty.

AV truly lived up to the immortal quote of Major Sudhir Kumar Walia, Ashok Chakra.... *“I won’t die in an accident or of any disease, I will go down in glory”*.

For these daring acts of continued inspiring leadership, utmost bravery and display of exceptional valour and devotion to duty, Captain Arvind Vikram Singh was conferred the award of Shaurya Chakra, which is the Nation’s third highest Award for Gallantry.

We pay homage to *Captain Arvind Vikram Singh, Shaurya Chakra* on this solemn day. You shall forever remain in our hearts and memories and will always be a source of inspiration to all of us. Our prayers for your Eternal Peace.

I request all of you to please observe two minutes silence in the memory and honour of *Captain Arvind Vikram Singh, Shaurya Chakra*.

Amen.

THE LADY WHO DESIGNED THE PARAM VIR CHAKRA :The Param Vir Chakra was designed by Savitri Khanolkar, a Swiss national whose real name was Eve Yvonne Maday de Maros, married to an Indian Army officer, Vikram Ramji Khanolkar. She was born in Neuchatel, Switzerland to a Hungarian father and Russian mother. Her father, André de Maday, was a professor of sociology at Geneva University, while her mother, Marthe Hentzelt, taught at the Rosseau Institute. In 1929, she met Vikram Khanolkar, a young Indian Army cadet undergoing training at Sandhurst, who had come to Switzerland for a break. She was still a teenager then; however, both fell in love although Vikram was much older than her.She came to India in 1932 - though her father was not too keen on it - and married Vikram in Lucknow. She changed her name to Savitri Bai after marriage. In spite of her European background she quickly adapted to Hindu tradition. She became a vegetarian, learnt to speak fluent Marathi, Hindi and Sanskrit. And also learnt Indian music, dance and painting. She called herself an European with an Indian soul, and never liked being called a foreigner. She had a deep interest in Hindu Puranas, which she read extensively, and also studied India's ancient history and its legends. It was due to this that Major Hira Lal Atal, the first Indian Adjutant General of independent India, asked her help in designing the Param Vir Chakra.Drawing on her extensive knowledge of the Puranas, Savitri Bai thought of Rishi Dadhichi, who had given up his own body for Indra to make the deadly Vajra, or thunderbolt. She came up with the design of a double Vajra, a common Tibetan motif then. The Param Vir Chakra is cast in bronze, with a radius of 1 and 3/8th inches. In the centre, on a raised circle, is the Ashok stambh, surrounded by four replicas of Indra's Vajra and flanked by swords.Incidentally, the first recipient of the PVC, Major Somnath Sharma, was the brother-in-law of Savitri Bai's elder daughter Kumudini, who died while fighting at the Battle of Badgam during the 1948 war with Pakistan. She also did a lot of social work, helping the families of soldiers killed in war, as well as Partition refugees. After her husband passed away in 1952, Savitri Bai sought refuge in spirituality and spent her later years with the Ramakrishna Math. She also wrote a book on the Saints of Maharashtra. She passed away on 26 November 1990 at the age of 77 after leading a truly remarkable life. A Swiss national of mixed Hungarian-Russian descent, married to an Indian Army officer, who adapted to the Hindu ethos extremely well, had designed the Param Vir Chakra, the highest military award in India!

Question: Does God's grace operate according to laws? Does He consider how much sadhana anyone has performed and accordingly bestow His grace? Or is grace without cause and reason? Is it lavished without strict relation to one's worthiness and entirely dependent on God's will?

Mataji: In God's kingdom everything is possible.
Listen to a story: Lord Narayana was having his meal. Suddenly he got up and hurried away, saying, " One of my devotees is being beaten. I have to go and rescue him." But after a little while he returned leisurely without having gone to the destination. On being asked why he had rushed away in the middle of his meal and then returned so quickly, the Lord replied, "My devotee was invoking me in dire distress. I hastened to his help. But when I saw that he had started defending himself there was no need for me to help him and so I returned."

A lesson can be learned from this. One has to invoke Him and to the very end depend on Him alone. Remembrance of His name, forbearance, seeking His shelter and complete self-dedication are man's duty.
Although grace has this motive, it still remains without cause and reason.

When a devotee receives divine grace he realizes that it is infinitely greater than what he could have deserved by his devotion and the conscientious performance of his duties.
Thus grace is unmerited divine favour - without motive, cause or reason.
God's whole creation is such. But unless one has attained to a certain level of achievement one will not be able to understand the complete causelessness of grace.

Recently my daughter showed me an aquarium full of tadpoles. She had purchased a bag full of them for her children to watch them grow from tadpoles into frogs. It was fun watching all of those little wiggly creatures swimming around in the aquarium! It brought back many fond memories of my own childhood, playing with "critters" down at my grandparents' home.

I noticed that there was a big rock in the aquarium. When I asked her why she put a rock right in the middle of the tadpoles' environment, she told me an interesting story. I can't believe that I have lived almost sixty five years without having heard it. It is so good and "life-essence saturated."

She said that she was instructed by the Pet Store Salesman to be sure to "put a big rock right in the middle of the aquarium." He explained that "the tadpoles must have this obstacle to give them the incentive to climb up and thus split their little wiggly tails so that their legs can begin to develop. If they have no rock or obstacle to climb up on, they will never turn into frogs. They cannot learn how to hop by just swimming around in water. They must have something causing resistance to give them the incentive to leap forward.

The man went on to tell her that last year a school teacher came back to the store and complained that none of her tadpoles had ever turned into frogs. She had put all of them in an aquarium and let them swim around but they never became frogs. He asked her if she had put a big obstacle, like a rock, in the middle of the aquarium. She said that she had not. She did not know that a tadpole will remain a tadpole unless it faces some obstacle or barrier that forces it to grow.

Neither did I, but it makes perfect sense.

So, my daughter was excited to show me all of the tadpoles swimming around the rock. In time, they will begin to try to climb it and eventually they will make the transformation into a more fully mature creature.

Well, it helped me understand why life presents obstacles and barriers to us. The barriers are not there to hinder us, but to cause us to grow. The object doesn't matter much; it is our attitude towards it that matters. If we realize that the obstacle we are facing is really a gift that has come our way to help us grow and mature, we will be much more likely to face it in a positive manner.

So, the next time you see a frog hopping around, smile at him and thank him for the lesson, remembering the struggle he has gone through to get where he is.🙏

Our Universal Ma Anandamayi ---

In may 1961, Ma was in Mumbai in the premises of Sri B. K. Shah. He is known to all Ma's devotees as " Bhaiya".

Bhaiya had requested Ma to pay a visit to Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, where respected Gopinath Kavirajji was convalescing after his critical cancer operation.

Gopibaba - as Ma called him would be released soon and Bhaiya pleaded Ma to have kheyal to visit the hospital on the day Baba will be discharged. Ma asked Bhaiya to arrange Her visit. The date was fixed and I had the rare opportunity, luck and above all Ma's kripa to accompany Her with Bhaiya and Paramananda Swami for the visit to the hospital.

As Ma entered the cabin of Gopibaba, he was all set and ready for his trip back with Ma. The doctors and nurses stood in a line greeting Ma with garlands. Ma accepted their garlands but returned " the Malas " to them after blessing them. However, She kept aside a huge red rose mala. Ma was offered a basket of red big apples also. She distributed all the apples but kept 2 big apples aside. She looked at me and asked me to keep the Red Rose mala and the apples, saying in Bengali, " Rakho, pore lagbe " ( keep aside for future distribution).

Now Ma in Her sweet voice overflowing with Compassion thanked the doctors and nurses all for their selfless untiring Seva of Baba. They all said to Ma, " it's your blessings and kheyal and kripa that miraculously saved Baba --- we are only instruments of God ---- nothing else !"

At this moment I heard someone's feeble voice, as if weeping and muttering " Ha Allah " thrice. I moved to the next cabin and peeped in. Ma was then supervising the arrangements regarding Baba's journey by wheel chair. Inside the adjacent cabin I saw an Arabic Muslim, cancer patient, with brown beard and hair lying straight on his Fowler's bed. His body was so much emaciated that he looked like a skeleton. His mid-chest had caved in, tears of pain (acute) and suffering were rolling down his sunken checks. Hiccups were coming of and on. Now and then he uttered feebly " Ha Allah !" His eyes were closed. His attending nurse told me he was a terminal lung cancer patient.

I returned near Ma. Ma started to move out towards the corridor and elevator with Gopibaba and his troupe of Doctors and Nurses. Suddenly She reverted back and without a word walked steadily towards the cabin of the Arabian Muslim patient. Bhaiya looked puzzled, Paramanandaji looked serene -------- the others and Gopibaba were spellbound and just halted on the way stunned.

I entered with Ma into the cabin of the Arabian patient. Bhaiya and all stood outside. Ma said smilingly ------- Baba, I have come to you, look at me ! Saying this, She caressed the caved in chest of the terminal cancer patient with Her soft heavenly blissful compassionate touches thrice. I felt that by doing this Ma was giving him liberation from human bondage or mortal coils. Then She wiped his overflowing tears with the corner of Her dhoti. Now Ma took the Red Rose Garland from my hand and placed it on the neck and chest of the Arabian patient. Soon after Ma took from me one of the big apples and put it into his folded hands. The other apple Ma gave to his nurse. Now the patient slowly opened his eyes and gazed in gratitude at Ma ---- he took Ma's hand and put it on his head. Ma made a gesture signifying that he repeats within his Koran Mantra. Ma and the patient had changes glances. Ma stood near him five minutes ----- Her eyes had an X-ray look through him as if She was witnessing his past, present and future all the same time. I just wept, to see the this union (spiritual) of a true devotee and God, (Bhaiya r Bhagaban Nikon - in Bengali) irrespective of caste, creed and nationality. Our blissful joy permeated Ma knew this was his first-cum- last Darshan. Ma walked backwards instead of turning round so that the patient could see Her till She went out. The doctors told Ma that his days were numbered.

Next morning on my own I asked Bhaiya to find out how the Arabian patient was. In the afternoon Bhaiya told me that the patient died the same night peacefully. I rushed to tell Ma but before I could utter any words Ma told me in Bengali ---- Arab Desher Baba Chole Gachhen ( Arabian Baba is no more).

So Ma's unsolicited kripa (Ahetuk) hastened his sojourn back to the kingdom of heaven where there is everlasting peace.

Only he knows to whom
You reveal Yourself
And once you have known Him
you become one with Him
