This is the second story I read today and both treated the sense of alienation people can feel and offered a way to overcome it. I like the way this story is kind of generalised (the woman, a child, a ship on the horizon). It is well structured and the beginning loops into the end phase.

putting your troupes in their places rather than through their paces
is lovely
eyes hungry but cautious is good

I am not sure about:...the opponent flustered as you take another
