Random crap written when I'm not working on a story... may or may not be interesting...

** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only **

BLOG!

I've never had one before...

Want to use this to keep my fingers moving even when I don't have a story to write, or if I'm stuck.

Will contain random crap which may or may not be interesting.

I don't do too many interesting things, so, i will probably write about things that other people, who I have never met and who may or may not be real, are doing.

Also, cats, and science, and beer, and metal.

yet another day home because of the snow! woo! my power is not out, so i'm happy :)
still not very much writing done, though i made a bit of progress on my silly space adventure story. This whole SOPA thing has pissed me off enough that I'm done giving my money to the MPAA and RIAA. im not going to buy or rent or even watch for free any movies or shows that have anything to do with them. there are plenty of european shows and bands i can enjoy. the industry is changing, and the huge corporations need to adapt or die, and with this recent attack on the internet, it appears they refuse to change. so they will die. all of hollywood can go bankrupt for all i care. independent film makers will still make movies for the love of it, not for billions of dollars. anyway, enough of that -

tell me your favorite birthday story!

well, even though i wrote this prompt, i actually dont have any very cool birthday stories. some memorable birthdays were my 16th, the first time driving to school by myself. it was such a surreal feeling the first time, i remember it very vividly, that feeling of 'oh shit im really doing this.'
another memorable birthday was one of my friends birthdays. i was drinking some hard alcohol, whiskey or something, and spilled a bit on the ground. in my not so clear state of mind, i thought a good way to clean it up would be to light it on fire. which i did. then sensing that i'd made a mistake, i tried to pat the flames out with my hand, and, of course, only lit my hand on fire. the fire was put out with minimal damage to the carpet, but i had some large blisters for a while.
and of course, my 21st birthday, im sure most people have a story from that date. my friends brought me to the bar, and after getting me a shot of patron (my first legal drink! hehe) and a beer, they put this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISmgOrhELXs on the jukebox. and a shot of bourbon, a shot of scotch, and a full beer were lined up in front of me, and when it got to the chorus of the song, i was meant to drink them all. i drank the bourbon, i drank the scotch, and got a sip off the beer before i had to stop and steady myself. it was a fun night. i dont enjoy doing shots though.. and the only time i do them is on my birthdays, because people tend to buy them for me, and i feel rude declining.

maybe i'll get a cat for my birthday this year

more snow outside! i'm staying home from work again, woo!
my story at clarkesworld was rejected, i should hear about my other one at asimov's soon.
I'm having trouble thinking of something to write... its getting frustrating!

"Who is the person (living or dead) that has had the greatest influence on you & your life? How have they influenced you?"

well, i'm sure my parents have had a lot of influence on me. my dad taught me to have a skeptical mind. when i was very young, he never let me believe in superstitious things. even santa clause, when i was young he asked me 'how would he get to all the houses int he world in one night?' 'what about houses with no chimneys?' 'how can he fly?' etc. and things such as psychics or aliens, too, he never told me 'no they arent real' but just posed questions, to make me think about how they would actually work if they did exist. so i've grown up to be very skeptical of all things supernatural or unlikely. the ironic part, is that my dad is extremely religious, and somehow he never made the connection to think that way about his own chosen mythology. oh well. im sure there are some things i'm blind to reason with as well. i can't say what they are, because if i knew.. i wouldn't be!

another huge influence on me was arthur c clarke. 2001 was the first book that really got me into science fiction, and science in general. it really radically shifted my interests from fantasy and the occult (which i was trying to learn about in my teens, despite my skepticism) toward science and the real world. mainly because one of the characters in the book mentioned carl sagan, and his book 'cosmos'. after i read that, i went on a streak years long of reading nothing but non-fiction science related books.

my earliest big non-parental influence, though, was douglas adams. his books really helped form my sense of humor, and made me want to be a writer.

now if only someone could influence me to be more motivated...

got sent home from work today because of snow, woo! barely got up the hill to my house, then went for a walk to the nearby restaurant and had a couple drinks with a friend. was a good time :)
also, i should be getting a reply from clarkesworld and asimov's very soon *hopes*

If you have five (5) days
left to spend together with your love one
how would you spend those days?

im going to assume its because one or both of us are dying. in that case i'd want to go to space. If i wasn't rich, i'd have to hijack the space ship, and take someone space suit, and one for my lover too. then i'd fly out of earth and aim us straight into the sun. we'd go out in a blaze in each others arms and maybe people on earth would see a speck of light from us as we burned away. or maybe i'd aim us on a course out of the solar system, so we could float forever in the freezing blackness of space, drifting together among the stars. we could be a message in a bottle to other life forms, ambassadors for our species, some distant time eons in the future.

and maybe their advanced alien technology could bring us back to life, our bodies preserved by the cold vacuum of space. and once we were healthy and whole again, and safe on their ship, they'd inform us that humanity had died out millennia ago, that we were the last two. they'd set us down on our own planet, that was suitibale for our needs. warm with edible fruits and plants, and not too many predators. and they'd give us a house with fancy alien technology, and we'd have all the time we wanted to relax, play, or populate the planet with children and grandchildren and bring humanity back from the brink of extinction.

except, i got that damned vasectomy. sorry human race!

It snowed yesterday! its still outside coating the trees, and more is floating down. its very pretty :)
i finished a story last night! it was based on one of the plot lines from 'plotto', i think it turned out alright. now i need to figure out something to write for 'on the premises' and quick!

When you went to sleep last night, it was in your own bed or familiar surroundings. You wake up this morning in a strange bed and unfamiliar surroundings. You recognize your reflection with some differences, the face in the mirror is an older/younger version of you. Everyone you meet knows you, but by a different name.

I suppose i must be some kind of spy, so deep under cover that I don't even know what's going on. But, they forgot to put in my new memories, so i am lost and confused. But, if i look in the mirror and see that i'm older.. then that must mean that i've lost some time.. or i've had some kind of alterations, maybe a temporary aging drug.. or maybe i have shapeshifting powers that i didnt know of. and all the people who know me are really other shapeshifters impersonating my friends, because its part of may training to learn to recognize other shifters. once i passed this first test, they'd all change into amorphous blob faced human shapes, and I'd have to do the same. but, i'd get stuck.. and have to change into the closest thing i saw.. which, would be a cat.. and uh.. yeah. I'm not feeling very bloggy today.

stayed up way late again last night, chatting and reading. and i didn't finish that story :/ only got a few hundred words on it. Instead i was following people on twitter and wordpress. (click the links in my bio if you want to follow me *Cool* )

What would you use to protect yourself if ZA occurred right this second?

Well, I don't have any guns or swords, or even a baseball bat. I do have a large knife, but i wouldnt want to be in close combat with a zombie, especially with a weapon that is going to make it gush its infected blood all over me.

What i'd likely do is pack as much canned food as i could in a back pack, bring the knife (and a can opener of course) and find a fishing pole, then drive down to the port and steal a boat, and just hang out in the middle of the lake until i felt it had all blown over. I'm pretty sure zombies cant swim, and would just be walking along the bottom of the lake if they even went into the water.

Then i'd just have to worry about other people who had the same idea fucking with me. Trying to take my food or my boat. So i'd have to keep on the move always, i'd probably follow the coast out to the ocean, then just sail south along the coast, down to california, then further down along south america.

The main key is to avoid combat and running, because I'm no good at either of those.

I'd bring a cat on the boat with me so i wouldn't be lonely... it could help me catch fish :)

Explain something or someone that you feel is widely misunderstood.

I'll just leave this right here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_misconceptions

Something that is widely misunderstood is quantum mechanics, or quantum theory. or whatever you want to call it. What bothers me is not that people dont understand it (even the people who study it would hardly admit to understanding it) but that people think they can just use the word 'quantum' as an excuse to explain away any crazy thing they want. You think you saw a ghost? mention some gibberish about a 'quantum field' (??) and you sound less crazy. You fancy yourself a psychic? Or a time traveler? you want to move things with your mind? you practice homeopathy? quantum quantum quantum. Just keep repeating that word to make yourself sound smart and sciency instead of like an idiot.

Well, it doesnt work with me. If you are throwing around the word 'quantum' and aren't talking about particles or waves on the sub-atomic scale, you are just waving the 'i'm a quack' flag at me. Which I don't mind, really. It's nice to know in advance.

And no, things don't cease to exist when people stop observing them. Read a textbook instead of a tabloid.

And stop putting cats in boxes with poison! D: you've made your point!

happy mini-halloween! i submitted two stories last night. i sent 'limerent egg' to clarkesworld, and 'palindrome' to asimov's. i dont know what to think anymore. after looking and reading over them so much i just cant tell if they are good anymore. also, Daily Science Fiction is now a qualifying sale for SFWA! so, only two more to go! :D

"Do you believe that bad things happen on Friday the 13th? Give us the reasons why you do or don't. Are there any other superstitions you believe (or don't believe) in?"

I believe that things happen on friday the 13th, and because of confirmation bias, people remember the bad ones and attribute it to the day. If you pick any day of the year, you can search around the world and find bad things happening on that day. if you have everyone working together to search, and point out every little thing that went wrong, then yes, it's going to appear that a lot of bad things happened on that particular day.

I dont have any superstitions that i'm aware of. I'll walk under ladders, break mirrors and I've had a black cat. i dont believe in ghosts or angels or curses or spells. I think it must be a very scary and confusing world that superstitious people live in, the world is complicated enough without the tiniest words and actions having magic powers!

of course, if magic made any sense it would be pretty neat. if it was more efficient or productive to be doing things with magic instead of, say, electricity or nuclear power, then people would be making a profit off it. and i dont mean by selling magic wands   that purify water to suckers for hundreds of dollars. I mean like using magic to power cars or light house.

oh well, happy friday!

I'm almost finished implementing the edits and suggestions from lovely lotte to my story palindrome,
then i can submit it somewhere :) I'm still feeling ill... but, its not so bad. I bought a fantasy novel for the first time in ages, its pretty good so far. thankfully there are no elves.

We have seen significant technological advancements in our time. Sites like TED and Big Think offer amazing ideas. What do you think will be the next big thing?

I think as computers continue to get smaller and faster and more powerful, they will eventually be contained in our own bodies, with the display on tiny screens in our eyes. we could control them with thoughts, or hand motions, or through a virtual keyboard that only the user can see. You could take a picture or record anything you were looking at, instantly. you could even have recording on at all times, streaming to a site where people can watch what you're up to. I think crime would drop dramatically, because it would be so easy to have witnesses just scroll back to the time it happened, and play what they saw for the police.

with governments and corporations trying to control the internet, i think people will leave behind the infrastructure we have, and focus on wireless connections directly between each other. wireless speeds and signal strength will increase until each person can broadcast their signal to around the world, using each other as relay points, with no need for government or corporation controlled cables or satellites. the internet wouldn't just be for the people and owned by the people, it would actually be the people.

any crime witnessed by anyone could instantly be broadcast around the world, any person in trouble could yell for help, not just with their voice, but with their eyes and ears, sending what they see and hear out to nearby people.

this high level of instant communication would lead to people helping each other more on their own, and less of a need for governments and laws eventually, you can search for examples of 'internet justice' even now. as people become more connected with people of other cultures and ideas, more accustomed to each other, people will be less likely to want to have anything to do with wars. and... and...

I'm being overly optimistic. people will probably be hacked into mindless zombies..

but, we'd also be able to talk to our cats!

well, i'm back at work. i feel alright but still a bit sick. im not coughing up a lunch every ten seconds though... like some certain people were on friday..

Time. We all have it, but nobody completely understands it.

What are your thoughts on time?

Time is like gravity pulling us downward; we are born in the sky without wings, and immediately start falling to our deaths. You can do things to slow your descent a little, flap your arms, be less aerodynamic, take off your shirt and try to use it as a parachute, but in the end everyone hits the ground.

And just like falling, the time accelerates. The more time you experience, the faster it goes, until the years are flying by so fast you can't keep track of them.

But, that is only how we as humans perceive it. Time is.. a sequence of events? How we measure what event's caused each other... Time is a ratio of motions. If nothing is moving, we can't measure time.. or there isn't time. If nothing is moving there can be no actions, no cause and effect, so time is motion?

Whatever it is, time is a jerk and ruins everything. Enjoy things while you've got them, because it's all temporary. Youth is wasted on the young, etc

someday im going to have all free time. And if im old, then i'll hopefully still be able to write. That will be nice.

Been doing a lot of editing and working on my other blog today, trying to get it to look professional! its harder than it sounds.. I'm a beginner :/

If you knew that whatever you ate next would be your last meal, what would you want it to be?

my last meal would consist of all the meats and vegetables and fruits that i'd never tasted before. A huge buffet of lion fillet, dolphin steak, elephant kebabs and armadillo stew. fried, raw or tempurad vegetables of all kinds, and fruits deserts or smoothies or pies. I'd have a bite of every thing i could until i could eat no more, then i'd have another bite.

But, it would be hard to enjoy it knowing i was going to die after.. i might want to eat as slowly as possible, maybe slow enough so that i never had to stop eating, and could continue my 'meal' indefinitely, as long as i had food. Of course, i'd have to sleep eventually, but maybe if i went to bed with a piece of food in my mouth, that would count as still in the middle of a meal. i could always have a backpack full of food, and bits of vegetables and fruits in my pocket. i'd have to become very active, running everywhere, while chewing on asparagus or celery.

Eventually i'd get tired of running, and the effort of living wouldn't be worth the enjoyment, and i'd eat my last piece of food, and lay down to close my eyes and die feeling lucky that i got to choose the time and place, and that i was done and ready.

And hopefully i get the comforting end, the black peace of oblivion, and not some kind of crazy afterlife for a billion eons of mind-shattering repetition.

Unless there were cats there, then that would be alright.
