Just an image "This will be our last prompt for 2020. Happy New Year!

Proverbs 9:17 says "Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant."

What do you think this means?"

This is a colloquial reference to sin. It means that sin may seem to be very rewarding in the short term and in a worldly sense, but in an eternal sense, sin is deadly. What child has never stolen a cookie out of the cookie jar and felt that added sense of pleasure when they got away with it? Stolen water tastes sweeter because it has the added thrill of knowing it is stolen and bread eaten in secret is pleasant because it is not shared. It all belongs to the one eating it. All of this adds to the attractiveness of sin. I mean don't let anybody fool you. Sin can be a lot of fun and it has its attractions. That is why it is so tempting. However, the long term effect of sin is death. It all starts out as fun and then someone gets hurt.

Made by the talented A. E. Wilcox Today as I was cruising through cyberspace I crossed the galactic rim and made a 45-degree turn across the outskirts of the galaxy into a realm where time and space have no meaning. Somebody said that it is now the last day of the year 2020 but I saw 2020 and eternity combining into an indescribable cascade. On the way back from this incredible event we stopped by the star (146) and said goodbye to 2020 by quoting poetry distinctly missing the most common vowel in the alphabet. Read

and tell us what you think. This piece has no letter E. What would we do without this common symbol?

One of the first things a code breaker looks for is common symbols because those usually represent a vowel commonly used in the language the code is based on. The universal translator onboard our own WDC Constitution (our imaginary ship) uses the same principle to translate languages. Without the letter, E English would not be a language we would recognize. Try writing one single sentence without an E and you will understand that it is hard to do. My hat is off to this writer, which is why I chose this piece.

Image for BCOF members to put in their blogs Prompt: "It's always a great time for introspection on the last night of the year. What made you happy in 2020 and what made you sad in 2020?"

What made me happy in 2020 was my success in graduate school. I am preparing to start my third semester on or around January 4, 2021. As it stands right now my GPA is 3.91. I am very happy with that.

What made me sad in 2020 was COVID and all the conspiracy theories flying around. Many people are still convinced that Biden cheated to win the election and that he would not have won without the overwhelming influence of social media and cheating. Some are convinced that the masks many of us are forced to wear are not about controlling the virus but about controlling the populace. I read a statement on social media last night stating that we should fly our flags at half-mast on January 20, 2021, to mourn for our country because it is supposed to become a socialist country according to the conspiracy theorists. All of the paranoia makes me sad.

Just an image In Proverbs 9:7-10 Solomon contrasts correcting a mocker with correcting somebody with a little sense. Tell us your experience with this.

It has been my experience that a made-up mind is hard to change. Herbert Spence once said "There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments, and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance- that principle is contempt prior to investigation."

If a person is a dead set on foolishness nothing a person can do to change their mind. I know a man who will look directly at scripture and swear it does not say what it very specifically says. These kinds of people I allow to think whatever they wish because ultimately we will all find out anyway.

I had a dog eat my homework one time. Mom made me go to bed rather than rewriting the assignment. She called the teacher at home and told the teacher what had happened and that she had witnessed it. The teacher told Mom it was good that Mom called because she never would have believed it from me. She allowed me to make up the assignment.

Just an image Discuss Proverbs 8:6-11 which compares wisdom to gold and silver. What do you compare wisdom to? Wisdom in this case being Jesus? If you were to compare your walk with Jesus to something, what would that something be?

I know the admonition Jesus made about putting one's hand to the plow and looking back. He said that any who did so were not worthy of the kingdom. I have to look back occasionally however because I am a recovered addict. Looking back reminds me of how bad it was before. So if I compare Jesus to anything I will compare Him to the life and friends I had before. Of course there is no comparison. Every bit of wonder and awe I see in Jesus is comparable to an equal amount of pain and misery I see in my past. I think Jesus understands my reason for looking back. I do so only to glorify Him. The passage in Matthew is talking about looking back and wishing for things from the past. There is nothing in my past that I want. Drugs led me to hell and I stayed there for years. Jesus was my way out.

How do you feel about the new year coming up? Your hopes and dreams?"

2020 has been a rough year as far as the COVID-19 virus but I have been blessed this year. I have learned a ton and eaten every day. I have wanted for nothing and I met my resolution, which was to obtain my peer recovery support specialist certification. For 2021 my resolution is to pass or at least be prepared to pass the IC&RC Alcohol and Drug Counselor's exams, both the written and the oral and obtain my ADC certification. I have yet to fail to meet a resolution so we will see how it goes.

My mother was always very superstitious. She insisted that we eat kraut and pork ribs on New Year's Day claiming it would bring good fortune throughout the year. My good fortune comes from Jesus Christ and He does not need help from superstitions like that.

Just an image We are still in Proverbs. Proverbs 8:5 says "You who are simple gain prudence. You who are foolish gain understanding."

What is the difference between being foolish and being simple? Is there a difference?

I feel there is a big difference in foolish and simple. The Hewbrew word used here for simple is פְּתִי and it is defined as simplicity or naivity. In this usage פְּתִי is a noun and Solomon is calling the hear naive. In the second usage we have the Hebrew adjective כְּסִיל which means stupid or foolish.

Things can be simple without being foolish. A third-grade level jigsaw puzzle may be simple but it is not foolish. Stupid on the other hand is stupid.

No. I cannot predict the future. I can however read the signs of the times. She'll work to either remove him or impeach him and Harris the baby killer will be president.

Image #2235060 over display limit. -?- In Proverbs 8:1-4 we have a scripture in which Solomon describes Wisdom as calling out to mankind. Jesus also called out to mankind. Are these similarities coincidental? Why or why not?

I do not believe these are coincidences. I believe that this passage is prophetic and discusses the Messiah calling out to the world just as He did. It may also be a reference to the many prophets who called out warnings to Isreal and tried to talk the people out of idolatry. I know that lots of passages of God's word can have multiple applications although the writer only meant to address one thing. This passage literally means that wisdom calls to the young like a parent calls to a wayward child. If the young do not hear and choose instead to chase after an adulteress relationship or any other sin they are choosing the way of hardship.

I enjoyed the women's haircuts of the 80's except for Afros. I enjoy the men's hairstyles of today. I typically always wore my hair short. There was one time I let it grow out to three inches long and got a wavy perm in it. The perm grew out so a friend of mine, who was a Hollywood hairstylist fixed it for me. Then I put on designer pants and a cashmere sweater and went to my uncle's funeral. I was so gussied up that my Grandma did not recognize me. She started flirting with me and making a fool of herself so I spoke to her. She recognized my voice and felt like an idiot.

What emotions do fragrances bring for you?

It really depends on the fragrance. If it is Chanel No. 5 it turns me on when women with certain chemistry where it. I've noticed that it doesn't smell the same on every woman. My sister came in wearing it once and it about set me crazy. I mean this is my sister. I couldn't and wouldn't jump her bones! Yet my wife put on Chanel and it smelled different. Different chemistry.

If i smell coffee brewing I have an emotional high from some of the romantic mornings when my wife got up before I did and started the coffee. We had some fresh picked and fresh ground Brazilian coffee and it smelled and tasted wonderful.

Image #2238942 over display limit. -?- Prompt: Proverbs 7:6-27 tells the story of a woman committing adultery. How do you think this ends?

I know this did not end well. Sin never ends well. Adulterers in the Old Testament were taken out and stoned if they were caught. It would not have ended well. I think what Solomon is saying here is that sin can be very enticing. The adulteress has her bed made up seductively and almost royally. Sin was pouring on the charm to look very appealing. Then a young man walks by it and is enticed by it. Sin always begins with a decision. Achan in Joshua 7 made a decision to steal some plunder from Jericho. If we go to Joshua 7 we will see that Achan says that he first saw the items he stole. He saw them. They appealed to him so he made the decision to steal them. Sin always begins with temptation and ends with a destructive decision.

which left an impression on us. Tell us what you think. Are first impressions important?"

I think first impressions are important to an extent and I try to make a good first impression. However, I have often found that first impressions can be misleading. There is a nurse here at the Veterans Home where I work and live that I got the wrong first impression of. When I first met her I thought she was a crabby, cantankerous old hag. She has turned out to be one of the best nurses we have. She has bent over backwards to help veterans and I see that she is really dedicated to her job. So first impressions can be misleading. That is why I try never to judge based on first impressions. I want to get to know the facts, not work based on assumptions and misleading conclusions.

A friend of mine suggested writing a short story for each of my grandchildren for Christmas. I wondered if others have. So I'm asking, have you ever done a short story for your loved ones?"

I think the personal touch is better. I seldom buy gifts. I usually don't have the money for them. However I try to let everybody know that I am thinking of them in some small way. The last gift I gave to members of my family were copies of my published books. I doubt that any of them have them any longer because I was always the outsider in my family. I have plenty of family today with my friends and my church.

Image #2238942 over display limit. -?- Proverbs 7:4-5 says that we should call "wisdom our sister and understanding our kinsman."

There is a school of thought that says that Jesus was the embodiment of the feminine characteristics of God. I never really gave that theology a lot of thought because God is spirit and therefore is neither male nor female. I do know however that Jesus is the Wisdom Solomon refers to in Proverbs 1:20 and it is Jesus who calls aloud in the streets. If we heed Jesus and follow His words we will not seek the wiles of the adulteress who is sin. What do you think?

The one type of theology that I do not want any of my followers, students, readers, disciples, or whatever to follow is sin management theology. Sin management is the theology that believes that once Jesus has saved us we have to keep ourselves saved by walking the "straight and narrow". Jesus did not save us to abandon us and expect us to live sin-free lives. God knows the human heart. He knows we are wicked, evil people and that it is natural for us to sin. In fact, Paul told the Romans that we are all sinners caught up in a cycle of sin from which we cannot escape in our physical bodies. Jesus knows we cannot stop sinning and being saved does not exempt us from sinning. It does, however, exempt us from the consequences of sin. Jesus is Wisdom and He will slowly remove sin from our lives.

Proverbs 7:1-3 discusses how we are to treat God's law. Where else does God make reference to writing things on the heart?

There are passages throughout the Old and New Testament in which God said that a time was coming and indeed had come when the law would no longer be commandments chiseled in stone but rather commandments written on the flesh of the heart. I will have to dig out my concordance for this one but off the top of my head I belive it is written in Galatians, Hebrews, Isaiah and Hosea.

It's Hebrews 10:16-26, Romans 2:15, Hebrews 8:10, Jerermiah 31:33 and there are others where God talks about writing his law on human hearts.

What are your thoughts on this cute Christmas tune?

I sang it to myself. The last two lines did not flow as smoothly for me but I believe that was my fault. I misread it.

I am too old to believe in Santa Claus but as a preacher, I have a problem with Santa Claus anyway. Santa Claus throws conflicting messages to kids. They grow up believing in him and suddenly he isn't real. As a preacher it makes me think they do the same with God. They believe in Him and then dismiss Him with Santa Claus.

I have enjoyed sending the prompts and I will be making entries and reading everyone's entries. I thank you for your responses to the prompts. I have enjoyed reading them.

I have enjoyed learning about Proverbs with Lazy Writer est 4/24/2008 and will continue the Proverbs prompts where she left off. Thank you Dianne. You have been a real trooper. I hope you get to feeling better soon. We all love you and appreciate you.

These verses are about adultery and the fact that God says not to do it. Many people think God is being vindictive in asking us not to do certain things. If God commands us not to do something though it is because doing that thing has negative side affects for humans. Adutery leads to broken relationships and God does not want broken relationships. God is in the relationship business. He is all about healthy relationships. Adultery not only destroys the relationship between couples but entire families and groups of people. It is very hard to forgive the hurt and betrayal.

What are your views on this?

Poetry is music in written form. Poetry as it originated follows the ebb and wane of musical notes. It was meant to be music without the instrumental arrangement.
