PROMPT May 30th

Congratulations on making it to the last day of the competition! What was your favorite prompt from the last month? What was the most rewarding aspect of participating in the competition? What did you learn?

The best part of 30DBC is getting to know the fellow members. Because of my time zone I’m always one of the first to write anything each day, other than Robert Waltz and Kåre Enga in Montana they often beat me to it! Quite often I seem to miss out on getting around to reading all the blogs, although I do try. Each participant takes the given prompt and runs with it, each in their own way, opening up and sharing just a little of the person they are. I find this the best part of the whole experience.
I really enjoyed the musical memory prompt. It was fun letting my thoughts drift to times gone by, remembering what music was playing when an event took place. I didn’t realise how much I attached my parents to the music of their lives. Dad always sang around the house and Mum would join in. It never occurred to me that they were living a love story before this prompt.

PROMPT May 29th

When I was little, I dreamed of living in a treehouse surrounded by a pool with a spiral staircase going up the middle of the trunk. In your second to last entry of the month, write about your dream home. Describe the rooms in your fantasy house and any unique characteristics. Be creative!

My dream house would be a huge farmhouse. It would have the country kitchen of my dreams, a massive fireplace, a fire that never needs replenishing but crackles and pops with perfect flames and heat. There would be a dining table in the kitchen that seats at least twenty people. Every room would be cosy, with over stuffed couches and homemade rugs on a flagstone floor. The house would always smell of homemade bread. The house cow would give us milk every day and all the other farm animals would come up to the house to visit.

Help me fill the Challenge War Chest with new prompts! In your entry today, write at least three prompts to be used in future rounds of the 30DBC. Then, write the rest of your entry using one of your own prompts.

Prompt one. What era (century) do you think you would have liked to have lived in?
Prompt two. If you had to eat the same thing every day , what would it be?
Prompt three. If you were a dog, what breed would you be and why?

There is no other era I would have rather experienced than the one I’ve lived. 1944 until now.
I can’t remember much about the first few years, but from 1950 onwards that was a time when people simply wanted peace. In the UK we still had rationing but we valued everything we had. Expectations were few and the family unit was the most important thing after being separated by war for so many years. Women demanded to be recognised for the valued members of society they were after being so important during the war years. Those years began the evolution of the technologies we have today, but before our dependence on them. The best of eras, I’m happy I was born when I was.

If your life were a song, 1) what genre would it be, 2) who would sing it, and 3) would it be a hit?

I know exactly what this would be! I wrote my life story for my family and called it by the title of this song. Eric Idle sings it and it was a great hit. This song is the number one choice for a funeral song in the UK. It’s called “Always look on the bright side of life” and this is how I’ve tried to live my life through all its ups and downs.

Complete the following sentence: When I’m in the mood to celebrate, nothing can stop me from ___________.

Talking, reaching out to people I know who might be up for a celebration. At this juncture in time everything sounds as if it’s a reason to celebrate. The opening of the recently imposed district borders is a reason. Opening the kid’s play parks suddenly becomes a reason. Allowing twenty people in the pub ( so long as we spend $30 per head) becomes a reason. Being allowed to hug my family is the best reason of all.

What is the most useless skill you have? The most valuable?

I have the usual home making skills which are invaluable but really tedious. Today’s generation will be learning different skills to ones I learned as a kid. At school we were expected to learn to sew and do embroidery. The boys did metal and woodwork I’m not sure these skills are valued as much today. The most useless skill I learned to do as a six year old was to balance a broom on the end of one finger. Funnily enough no one ever asks me to demonstrate. The best place to find useless skills is in the Guinness Book of Records. I was quite envious of the man who was famous for being the fastest to walk 50 yards on his hands holding a football between his legs. I’ll start practicing tomorrow!

PROMPT May 24th

Write about something awkward or embarrassing that happened in public - it can be something that happened to you, or something you witnessed happen to somebody else. How did they react?

My son in law is famous for putting his foot in it, so to speak. A young woman who he’d not seen for ages was at a gathering he was also attending. He approached to say hello and ask her how she’d been. “I’ve not seen you for so long,” he said. “ I see congratulations are in order, when’s the baby due?” She just said. “ I’m not pregnant.”
He just apologised and slunk off.
Falling over in public has been the most embarrassing thing I’ve had to endure. I quickly stood up reassuring everyone I’m fine, putting on a smile, whilst all the time thinking ‘that bloody hurts!”
What was it that stopped me sitting in the middle of the street and having a good cry?

What is something you like to do that other people might think is “weird?”

I can’t think of anything. I don’t stand on my head. I don’t walk backwards down the street. I don’t read a magazine from back to front (well not every time.) I don’t wear outlandish clothes or colour my hair green, red or purple. Good God, I must be normal!

Music often has the ability to remind us of old memories. In your entry today, be inspired by a specific piece of music or a musical instrument. What feelings/emotions does the music or instrument stir in you? Share a specific memory your chosen song or instrument reminds you of.

There are so many memories attached to music throughout all my life.
The first that springs to mind was being on school camp in Wales. I am fourteen years old, my friends and I are in a milk bar putting money into the juke box. We’re dancing to Cliff Richard singing ‘Living Doll.’ We are thinking we’re the coolest girls around.
The next strong memory was being sixteen. My boyfriend had a job cleaning a nightclub once a week. He was saving up for a motor scooter and got paid £1 each week. He and I were both the same age. I would keep him company whilst he scrubbed the wooden staircase and the floor. I loved the fact there was a microphone available and would sing to him. Mostly Elvis songs, his favourite was ‘Love me tender’ ( no wonder he married me!)
Anything by the Glen Miller band reminds me of the movie, The Glen Miller Story. I can still see June Allyson crying when she listened to Little Brown Jug.
I was brought up on war songs, Vera Lynn and We’ll Meet Again, does it for me every time. My dad played a saxophone in a dance band, so I’ve always had a soft spot for that instrument too.
But you just can’t beat the sound of a lone bugle player sounding The Last Post to stir the soul.

Not including your phone, computer, or other Googling device, write about the top five most useful items you own.

If this list can include things my husband finds useful then I’d have to include a bottle opener made from a pair of kangaroo’s balls. Everyone knows where this item is situated in the house, somewhere very accessible.
Number two would be my favourite kitchen knife.
Number three is my smoothie maker on which I make my morning vegetable and fruit drink.
Number four are my two rows of hooks just inside the pantry. Here I hang my keys and the dog lead without thinking. Very useful.
Number five would be the man a I’ve lived with for most of my life. He’s really useful!
