hi wizzie,
i've suffered from anxiety and depression for years and meds have worked for me to some degree.
other aids have been:
writing down the effects of my anxiety, and my feelings about them, in a diary, over time--to objectify my anxiety, and take it out of the purely subjective.
also, as an exercise, writing down Every thought and feeling that comes up, without exception--including things like "i can't think of anything right now" and "i wish someone would close that door!"--as a stream of consciousness, for a full letter-size page, or as close as i can get to it. it's very effective in raising subjects and triggers from my unconscious and my subconscious to my conscious attention, and can lead to remedial action.
other tools:
conscious breathing, the deeper the better, without overstressing; comfort and ease are the means and the goals.
a semi-repeat: write a list of your anxieties and symptoms in one column and a list of practical remedies and actions in a column next to them. then take action.
talking issues out with a trusted friend or therapist or group.
listening to, singing, playing soothing music.
moving around or dancing easily and fluidly.
healing stretches: gently stretching any part of your body that feels most stressed--a Little beyond your comfort level. the goal is to release stress, not "crunch" or tense the muscles or increase stress.
going outdoors to a place that feels safe and restful.
another semi-repeat: reality-checking the nature and source of the anxiety, and taking appropriate action if necessary.
reading engaging and relaxing material to shift the mental focus and calm the mind.
create, enjoy art.
talk to and comfort others who experience anxiety.
forgive yourself for mistakes and losses.
my most important and powerful aid/tool: use your Higher Power/Creator if you have one.
comfort food--within reason. (chocolate is an independent food group.)
laugh, especially at yourself.
...and i hope that some of this helps.
my own anxiety has decreased to very low levels over time, and my worst days are far better than my good days used to be.
i include my best thoughts for your speedy recovery and health, and your happiness.
sincerely,
john h. :):):)
