Image for BCOF members to put in their blogs "Prompt: January 18 is Thesaurus Day . Pick out an object and describe it with words form the thesaurus ."

This sounds like an interesting prompt but I have some issues with it. My biggest issue is that I have no thesaurus. I had my skull fractured as a child. Like she usually does when nature takes a skill away she gave me something to replace it. She took away my ability to do complex multitasking jobs as a result of the brain injury. However she replaced that ability with an immaculate understanding for words and an uncanny vocabulary. Words that many people only use in documents I use routinely. My family often referred to me as "brain" due to my ability to use words they did not understand. I have learned to 'dummy down' over the years. I guess you could say I am a walking thesaurus. I also own no thesaurus so even if I had a desire to write out their meaning for a word I could not do so. Besides a thesaurus does not give definitions. It only gives you alternative words. For example you may be looking for a word similar to "rocket". The thesaurus may list "missile" "self-propelled projectile" and other such words, but it would not define them. For definitions try "National dictionary day."

Blog City image small Prompt "Re-write your favorite fairy tale."

I'm so sorry but my muse went on strike. No. I actually do have a poem I think will work. I wrote it for a contest.

Image for BCOF members to put in their blogs Prompt: "Top ten foods you could eat for the rest of your life."

Before I begin, I want everyone to know that I have not been shirking on my blog this week. I was in the hospital for emergency surgery. I woke up Sunday and went to church as I normally do. By noon my abdomen was hurting so badly it nearly doubled me. I went to the ER at the VA and they said I had a kidney stone that was blocking the main duct in my kidney. I also had stage three kidney failure. I guess I have had kidney failure for three years and was unaware of it. Anyway the stone was causing urine to back up in my right kidney, causing infection and swelling. I was also severely dehydrated from drinking too much Mountain Dew. The caffeine and phosphoric acid in the soda caused the dehydration and the stone. One of my top ten foods would have been Mountain Dew but no longer. I guess my top ten foods would be chocolate soft serve, vanilla soft serve, mixed soft serve, strawberry ice cream, lasagna, goulash, pepperoni rolls, steak (medium rare) roast beef, and Chinese food. Did I mention ICE CREAM? I love ice cream!

Blog City image small Prompt:"Free writing: Set a timer for 5 minutes and write about anything that comes to mind.

I didn't set a timer because I type much too slowly for that. My speed is about 25 words per minute with corrections. So I am very slow at typing. I have neurological conditions that slow me. However I do want to tell you about my week. I went to church Sunday like I always do. While at church I got sick to my stomach. I had severe abdominal and back pain. I came home and it got worse. I called an ambulance and the medic immediately said "kidney stones". I thought he was wrong because I've had them before and felt differently. The hospital confirmed it was indeed a stone but this one was still in the kidney. It had blocked the duct leading into the ureter and was causing my kidney to swell. They rushed me to another hospital where I went to emergency surgery and they removed a 6.2mm stone and placed a stint into my kidney. The stint will be removed in ten days. During the meantime I am still passing blood due to bleeding through my kidney. I have to take it easy for a week and of course they stopped all blood thinners. Now it is a matter of healing. I warn all of my readers not to drink Mountain Dew in excess like I did. The acid causes kidney stones and the caffeine dehydrates, which also causes stones.

Prompt: Write about a grandparent."

I always wondered what my grandma was like. There were no pictures of her and she was dead before I ever was thought of. I never met her. I hear she could be pretty mean, but in that day and age parents were very strict. I also hear she was probably an alcoholic. I know she was killed in a vehicle accident, alcohol involved. I may not wanted to have met her, but I would still like to have known. I always felt cheated in that respect. I know that someday I will get to know her, but I would have liked to have known her during her life.

Blog City image small "Prompt: “Nothing makes us so lonely as our secrets.”
Paul Tournier
What do you think about this quote, and what kinds of situations force us to keep secrets? Then, are all our secrets necessary?"

I don't know what prompts most people to keep secrets. I would imagine people keep secrets because they are afraid they will be made known. It works for me anyway. I do believe some secrets should be kept. Military secrets exist to keep information out of the wrong hands for example. There are good secrets then there are bad ones.

There will be a penumbral lunar eclipse visible at some places on Earth. Have you every witnessed a Lunar eclipse, if so, write about it. Otherwise use the Full Wolf Moon to inspire your blog entry."

Yes. I observed the lunar eclipse a few years ago. I believe it was 2016. I was at the VA hospital in Clarksburg WV. I was an ambulatory patient so I was allowed to walk outside and see it. The staff had bought special glasses designed to make the eclipse visible without hurting one's eyes. It was a sight to behold. I was also in an eclipse in the 90's that momentarily left it completely dark at noon. That was a trip! I guess if one lived near the poles one would be accustomed to seeing darkness at noon but for me it was awesome!

Blog City image small "Prompt: "The greatest treasures are those invisible to the eyes but found by the heart." Judy Garland What are your thoughts about this quote?"

I agree with Garland 99% but I believe that the greatest treasure is actually found in heaven. The greatest treasure is Jesus Christ. I agree that it is with the heart that we find Christ. If one does not believe in one's heart that Jesus Christ rose from the dead then one cannot be a Christian. I believe it fully. I have seen way too much evidence in my life and history not to believe.

Image for BCOF members to put in their blogs Prompt; "What is your biggest guilty pleasure?"

Don't you believe that is getting a little personal? I mean...no seriously though, my biggest guilty pleasure is probably ice cream. I eat way too much ice cream and I'm starting to pay for it. I need to quit eating ice cream because it is affecting my stamina and my breathing. I am going to do so if it kills me! I watched my brothers gain weight due to lack of activity and overeating. I don't want to be obese. I already am for that matter. I'm 50 pounds over my ideal body weight as it is. I need to lose weight. I don't want to make it my New Year's resolution because I try to make resolutions I know I can keep. However I do need to lose weight. When it becomes problematic to me I will I guess.

Blog City image small "Prompt: When you run out of book shelf space, where do you put your over flow of books?"

I usually take them to the library. We have a library at the West Virginia Veteran's Home where I live. Any extra books I have go there.

Find a way to work this quote into your blog."

I don't have to be very creative to work the quote "“Snow is diamonds for a faery's feet;
Blithely and bonnily she trips along,
Her lips a-carol with a merry song,
And in her eyes the meaning... Life is sweet!”~ Ruby Archer", into my blog.

I just did in fact. However I suppose I could write a poem like

"Life truly is sweet as it always is
I will continue to sing and sing
I will praise the Lord my King
He is my righteousness!"

There is always something one can write using any prompt if you aren't lazy. I have been wanting to write based on quite a few prompts lately, but have both found I did noot have time and at times was simply lazy.

Blog City image small "Prompt: "A good painting to me has been like a friend. It keeps me company, comforts and inspires." Hedy Lamarr Do you feel this way about a good painting?"

I don't suppose I have ever thought of a painting as anything but a painting. Of course I have looked at paintings and came up with stories/poems based on them.

Image for BCOF members to put in their blogs "Prompt: What is the best thing about January? Why?"

First of all I would like to say "Happy Birthday" to my grandfather Bernard J. Schrebe (January 7, 1906-June 6, 1986).

January is one of my least favorite months because it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere and I do not like winter. I don't think there is anything as ugly as a tree without leaves. On the other hand, I was manning the front desk temporarily at the office yesterday and we have a beautiful view from it. I noticed that even without leaves the trees have an intrinsic beauty. I couldn't quite figure out what was attractive about it, but nature just appeared beautiful. I couldn't help but notice it. Maybe it was because the sky was blue and the sun was shining, an unusual occurrence in January. Anyway, it was pretty.

Blog City image small "Prompt: From your point of view, what makes people (men, women, or both) lovable and attractive?"

I think the thing that makes people the most attractive to me is genuine love. People can tell when you really care about them, and when you are being as fake. I work at the Salvation Army Huntington Corps where I do peer support. I encounter people all the time who genuinely care for others, and I also encounter people who simply want to get the job done. Believe me, when my work becomes just a job that I need to get done I hope somebody tells me that I have lost my edge. Yes there are people who take advantage of the generosity of others, and somebody needs to sit down with them and ask them straight up "Why do you feel you need a hand out instead of a hand up?"

OIn the other hand if I ever get to the point that every client who comes into the building is viewed as a drain on society then I need an attitude adjustment (or a new line of work.) I have seen people in the helping professions who genuinely needed a new vocation. Burnout is real and some suffer from it. The love of Jesus Christ helps me want to meet people at their point of need. Genuine love is attractive and to me is the most endearing human quality!

January is one of my least favorite months. I am not a fan of trees without leaves, although winter has a strength and freshness about it that is beautiful in it's own way. Snowflakes were never my favorite because I had to work in cold, wet snow when I was young and I learned to hate it. The moon is often very beautiful in the winter because we see it better. On a bitter cold night there is less haze in the air and it makes the moon more visible. A wolf loves to howl at the winter moon. Warriors like myself become accustomed to winter however. The rabbit probably hates winter. I can't think of a thing to do with cheese. I guess you can say I'm out of cheese.

I'm late getting this in. I woke up yesterday and could barely walk due to the pain in my leg. I had the day off anyway so I went to the doctor to find out what the problem was.It turns out I am looking at surgery. I need a new knee. Mine is bone on bone. The cartilage is completely gone. Old Arthur has done a number on me. The doctor said it wasn't my age: it was the mileage I've put on my knees.

I have no story to tell. I'm barely keeping up with my blog.

I've tried keeping plants but I do not have a green thumb. I just end up killing plants. I gave up on that idea a long time ago. I guess I'm better at growing relationships than I am at growing plants. If I have to grow a garden, I would much rather it be a garden of human relationships, human interaction, and human growth. I want to be a licensed social worker and am putting my sights on that goal. We'll see what happens.
