In my view, the primary focus should be on encouraging the writers to write. I do not review items I don't enjoy anymore because I see it as a waste of my time. So, if you get a review from me, I enjoyed reading your work. The amazing thing about this whole process is that reading an inspiring review usually leads to me reading more of a reviewer's work also. So, it's a win-win.

something I do not like. I do not enjoy writing hyper-critical reviews. I do NOT believe that "honesty" is a synonym for "mean." If I see someone being "mean" here on the public reviewing page, in group behaviors, or just acting as a bully I will not send them my reviews. The only exception to that would be judging a site contest - there all items get honest (and hopefully diplomatic) reviews of the work from me with no exceptions.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

Your goals are refreshingly specific and center around your love of the arts. Music is a main one that can carry someone through tough times.

Your interests are varied and seem very enjoyable. You combine photography and painting with travel goals. I know that a lot of us look forward to getting on the road again. Early fall seems like it might be a distinct possibility. I hope it is for you. Picking up where you left off with puppetry and dancing also sound like things to look forward to now.

It's always good to have goals that are positive and engaging and not dwell too much on the year behind us. It has its effects, but you don't seem like you are going to let it keep you from moving forward and that's a good thing.

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment. I also enjoy something that touches me personally like music related goals do. I have a grandson who has a lot of music related interests and your letter reminded me that I would like to hear him in concert again before the year is over.

That is to give you an idea of where I'm coming from in the whole judging realm.

No expert on keeping my own New Year's Resolutions, I didn't even try to think of any this year. So, I'm also looking to be inspired with my own plans for the year.

I admire you for all the thought and effort you put into this.

Your reviewing goals sound very doable. Someone else said they are aiming for writing two a day when here. I think one or two a day puts you well on your way and then some.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I like your specificity in setting goals. Organizing your poetry collection and editing your novel sound like they are things already set up and waiting for you to do your thing. I agree that 2021 is probably the type of year to approach goals as ways to finish things that might have been started in 2020 and before. In other words, ease into it. That seems like a good way to go about achieving what you want to achieve.

I Write and Good Reads seem compatible. Reading is a way to inspire writing and doing that I Write Activity is always fun. It is good that you have the discipline to do it. You know you do because of past performance.

Walking more is good, as is meditation and starting slow and easing into things to get oriented.

I admire you for teaching in this scary time, too. I bet that's a challenge every single day. None of us knows what really goes on in the education systems right now. I have two grandsons who are still doing virtual, but I think that there is a shift toward in-person where they go to school. Who knows how these young ones will cope with all this nonsense in the end or how much damage has been done by the malfeasance and mismanagement of politicians.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I particularly like your approach to "changing your eating habits" rather than dieting. When that happens and one makes an effort to do that, healthier times cannot be far away.

Well done with everything and thank you for all you do as a teacher to help the young ones!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how it might be good luck for the year that you did a Dear Me letter this year. I did one last year, but not this year with the same sort of nervous belief. Maybe the combination of you doing one and me not doing one will lead to a better year overall. Superstition, I know, but there it is.

Your message to yourself is to do better. I like that because it's not like you are beating yourself up or overly indulging yourself. It's encouraging without providing too much praise.

Giving yourself January is also something I could identify with. Somehow I'm thinking that January and February are for getting organized. I liked where you went with that.

Your goals with regard to personal history writing and roots are consistent and tie well into writing a history of Writing.Com at some point It's part of your history.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

The part about maintaining an active site presence is good and mentoring someone can be a positive thing that connects you with someone just starting out. That is a win/win for you and the site. You wrote a lot of the site explanations/guide I think and that's something that helps new and older (like me) members alike. I use it a lot as a reference or when I want to actually learn something new. Can't beat that.

Everyone has their contribution to make, I reckon.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I think that your item makes a lot of sense. It is good to visualize yourself as what you want to achieve, having arrived there. I found this to be positive and inspiring.

*Noter* Don't forget in the future to include your word count as required by the rules. I have been guilty of that myself in the past so don't feel bad about it. It happens to all of us. It doesn't change the fact that you did some fine work here.

This part stays with me:

"I heard a psychologist say recently, that if you aren't at least a little embarrassed by where you were or who you were a year ago, then you haven't learned anything."

Somehow, I think it's even more true in such a difficult year. We all should be embarrassed to some extent, given what's transpired and how we've all fallen in line so easily with whatever was dictated from on high. That really struck a chord with me.

I wonder how we will all see things in a couple of years looking back. That is where the Dear Me writing can give you a timeline of how you felt about things and about writing in retrospect.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

It is tough to start out the year with worry about someone else. It is good to regroup and you did that in time to enter so that's positive and setting out some doable goals that are not too overwhelming seems like a very smart approach to me.

*Noteg*One thing to remember in future entries is to include your word count. I have forgotten that myself at times, so I know that's an easy one to overlook when we focus on the writing.

I admire you for your organizational skills. You analyze what is needed and pinpoint what needs to be done. Nice and concise and well without your ability to achieve, I'd say.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I like the focus on writing and reading. Starting small with organizing stuff and clutter sounds sensible to me, too. When you read, you want to analyze what works so you can use that in your writing. That makes a lot of sense. Reading and thinking can only lead to good writing so well done, there!

Starting on the last day of January makes more sense to me than starting on the first. You have had time to really think about things you want to accomplish. That sounds like a good thing to me.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* This is a very funny letter about a horrific year. I enjoyed learning about chocolate and its many uses. I had no clue before this about the zombies.

California is like a brother. Annoying but lovable.

I enjoyed all the humorous observations about life in Las Vegas.

*Thumbsup* That thing about the neighbor from hades really cracked me up. Where does he get off. Wow. Talk about making a bad year worse.

Eeewww. I hope he had the decency to be embarassed.

Sometimes, I laugh behind the mask at things too. I'm not sure anyone can tell or even that anyone else gets it. It's nice to know that I'm not alone.

*Cool**Idea*I thought about how when one focuses on gratitude instead of the negative aspect of the situation this year, that there are many things to be thankful for. You emphasize having the time to do it. We all have the time to do it, if we make good use of that time.

What does hooves/tHing moo and applaud about while reading your item?

These two lines struck me particularly:

"Invite in gratitude and watch it bloom
Thank others for being kind..."

I think this is the key - to focus on how others feel and try to make their situations a little easier if we can. It is the generous spirit that will triumph over the many obstacles to thankfulness this holiday time.

What does tHiNg think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I thought about the photograph and the romance of it, the violence and the romance. I think your poetic words have captured the mood perfectly. It is like a dance that doesn't end well. It's an unusual twist because sometimes it is the man who destroys. There is an empowerment in the photo and in your words that are intertwined in a very interesting way.

What does tHing moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"That as the moon rises
And twists itself through its cycles
Her powers grow
And theirs diminish"

I think you have done a wonderful job of conveying a sense of strength and domination that comes through the photograph.

*Cow*You posted before me in the I Write in 2020 activity. As always, it is my pleasure to read and review your essay.

What does tHiNg think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I thought about all the things we take for granted in nature, and otherwise too.. Natural beauty and changes really do, as you assert, soothe the spirit in times of trouble. It has to be a conscious effort to focus and you bring plenty of examples to bear.

We notice it when walking our dog, now. We notice how the seasons have changed and how she seems to notice it in what she focuses on. Her senses are much sharper than ours, although we are all aging. The air smells different almost the first day of fall. She noticed it and so did we this year. I think it's because our senses are more in tune without immediate environments than usual. We're not all rushing around this year.

What does tHing moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I enjoyed thinking about water and its importance. I even took a long drink of it whilst I was reading your essay. It is reassuring now to wash our hands often, something taken for granted only a short time ago. Focusing on the changes outside of ourselves and the characteristics (like the color green) is a reminder that to focus outside ourselves can be the greatest peace of all.

All around us there is beauty if we only stop to see it. I think it's why my dog gets excited for her walk every day at 14 years of age. Something new in the air every day!

I thought about Angelo and poetic justice for all the things he is so arrogant about. Sooner or later that sort of thing catches up in unexpected ways.

Your story is rich in description. I could picture it all as I read. I won't give away the plot in the review, but I liked Sarah. She really did seem to be trapped in a life of luxury that really was not all it seemed on the surface. Below the surface of the water, justice waited I guess.

The countdown built up the suspense and uneasy feeling throughout. I felt like something would happen, based on the title and once the clock started going.

All her life was the countdown to this message to her father.

Very well written - time is that fleeting thing and is always really limited.

What does tHiNg think about while perusing your item?

I liked your take on the Cop Shop Mystery. Bringing the Astors in is a stroke of genius with an eye toward future episodes. Didn't the patriarch or one of the early heirs die on the Titanic?

Five sounds like he's got his head on straight so far.

I liked the ending especially how you enquire about what else is in the time capsule. I thought that was a brilliant way to lead to next year's mystery. Five, understandably wants to change the subject.

What does tHiNg think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I thought about the rhyme you used. You remind the reader of nursery rhymes, but you take it to another level with your modern day twist on what's going on with these rhymes from our youth.

Your poem flows very well. Being named "Jack" seems to carry a certain twist with it.

What does tHing (sometimes HOOves) moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

Little Jack Horner went into politics
Where he became famous for dirty tricks,
Lying to his constituents,
And selling his political influence.

The rhyme of constituents and influence is perfect. The truth is always hard to face for a politician and Jack Horner seemed to be destined in that direction.

What does tHiNg think about while perusing your item?

This poem draws apt comparisons between the shades of blue one encounters in summer time, comparing that to literary inspiration. The comparisons all are natural progressions and it all ties together very well.

I had never thought of the color blue in this way. Blue like my true love's eyes, how they were in autumn when we meant. Colors bring about such vivid memories. I love the use of color and light in writing and poetry. It inspires in a way that only music can do otherwise.

This had me looking at things in a different way then I have before. That is always something that hits home for me when I read. Oh yes, I never thought of it quite that way before is what goes through my mind.

This was my favorite passage:

"Blue is the ocean
Waves rolling onto the shore
Whispering sonnets"

That blue has inspired some wonderful writing here. Well done!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* This is a helpful essay about coping with one of the toughest things in life, when employment ceases. The author has anxiety about this very thing, so the coping mechanisms chosen make a lot of sense.

It is clear that a lot of thought went into this well-written essay.

This is very timely as a lot of people are losing everything now, with very little to hold on to. The support system that was there even six months ago (in terms of places to get help if it is needed) have vanished. If people have a bit of security, they cling to it now.

Scary times.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

*Thumbsup* Staying calm seems to be the main thing that everything else depends on. Sometimes we can do this in the day time, but at night those anxieties come to play. Making a plan is a great thing to do and keeping flexible is good too.

I heard about a guy who had no access now to the Internet. His normal way would have been the library, but those are all closed, as is the unemployment office in his area. So, if you have Internet and a way to get it right now, one is way ahead of this guy. I do not know what people like this are supposed to do. Plus people who have lost everything and just then the Internet provider decides to raise the rates 20% or more. This is happening all over the place.

I hope you are still in a good place now. I hope everyone gets back to something where this kind of situation isn't a downward spiral. Keeping calm may be the ultimate key to getting back to things.

This was very helpful to anyone who has had reason to panic lately and I think that amounts to a lot of folks.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I have not seen the show, but I have heard good things about it. I have friends who love it and they have very good taste and like smart shows, also.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

The things you like about the show, the smart writing and such, resonate with me. Sometimes, I get hooked on a show (Dexter comes to mind) where the writing is stellar and then they make changes. That is the big danger with a show like this, sometimes the writers move on.

I hope your writers stick with the show and keep the great episodes coming. With Dexter, it was a dramatic change after the 4th season and I quit watching after being hooked. Another show that comes to mind is Game of Thrones, which had a number of outstanding seasons, then whatever happened happened. Well, I guess cast members moving on can have an impact also.

I hope Westword sustains the quality of production that viewers have enjoyed so much. At least it was here for you during these hard times. I find that shows like that, that sustain one in tough times can have a lasting place in the heart. In that way, they are like movies that move us.

I enjoyed reading your blog entry very much and learning more about why people like the show so much.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* Oh oh oh!! We've been there with our Boo. She is almost 14, but she spends a period of time everyday barking in our faces. She wants more treats and if she doesn't get them, she barks. Then she barks some more.

We have tried calm reasoning and Mr. HOOves yells. But nothing works. I think it's because unlike your smart Buddy, Boo suspects we have no limits and she's right! *Laugh*

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"With a smile I humored him,
There's no sense in all of that.
For reasons unknown, this did not quiet him."

That is a nice calm stage. We are so far removed from that, it isn't funny.

Your rhyme is true and fine. I confess that some days, I secretly love the barking because it shows she still has a lot of spirit and sass. She probably senses that weakness on my part.

Your poem definitely struck a chord of familiarity as we all deal with the barking of those we hold dear.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* Life does throw us some curve balls, doesn't it. I have been thinking a lot about my parents and how they had their challenges. I always felt like they took charge.

I am not sure that I have whatever it takes to do that, but I'm older than they were at the time they faced the biggest challenges. At least I think that's the case. I find myself wishing I could ask them what they think about it all. Maybe they felt that way about someone too, from their past. Hard to tell.

It's what we make of what we are given. I know that yet I wonder why humanity keeps repeating the same mistakes in different manifestations. Is it so we all get that lesson we need? Well, it's hard to know that, too.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This part stays with me:

"Lately, a tarnished gold weaves in and out,
strong and resilient and resigned to finish this thing."

I admire this attitude, but I'm not sure that I have this much resolve about it all.

Maybe some days I do and not so much others. One thing I do know is that you only get to the truth of a thing by facing it.

Very thoughtful poetry, as always. Do we each make that tapestry our own or is it that way whether we want to own it or not. That's a question to think about I reckon.

This is a poem of faith that looks to a positive day in the future when the promises of faith come to fruition.

I am not familiar with the Festival of Ridvan, but I don't think you need to be in order to appreciate this pronouncement of devotion.

This was my favorite passage:

"The day when unity lights the planet!
The day when peace shall flood the Earth!"

A song came to mind that says if only you believe like I believe we'll get by. I think it is inspiring to look to faith and hope in these troubled times we are living in.

This is so lovely! I had fun writing what I thought about things. It is hard to pick favorites. Moseley will always be my favorite ever though. Same with Violet. Without them there are a lot of other great characters to enjoy and love. Even Thomas Barrow is lovable in the end. I wonder if Mrs. O'Brien had stayed if she would have been lovable.

I always thought that after Matthew, Charles Blake was a the best one for Mary. I don't know why they dropped that. I liked him a lot better than Henry. Thanks for having this!

*Cool**Idea* With the world the way it is now, it is easy to forget the lovable charm of human contact. Sometimes, it is the small gestures that live on in our memories of what humanity can mean.

A lovely, courteous gentleman with an unforgettable greeting. There is a lot of unspoken, but genuine affection in this portrayal.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This is my favorite part:

"Widowed and alone,
with a twinkle and a smile
he'd offer a "good morning"
and sometimes a song."

Wouldn't that be so welcome right now through all these masks and all the self protective gear. Oh, for the days of not being warned to death.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea*Your poem tells of an enduring love, that bends and stretches over time. The image of a silken thread (the title) ties in well with the words that you use. Love does indeed wrap around our hearts and minds like an expandable thread.

The title fits like a glove, and so does the free verse format.

I typically look for phrasing or words that stay with me and I certainly found them here.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This is my favorite passage:

"Unselfish care strengthens the links
and binds us to a singular
focus."

Sometimes one's love can be reinforced and strengthened by hard tests. You know how much you truly love when you have to put yourself aside and concentrate on that other person. It can go the other way when someone runs, but that usually will happen early on. Time and devotion tell the tale as none of us is perfect.

When the other person's well being and happiness mean more than our own, well you've got something precious there. Precious and as delicate as a silken thread.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea*I thought of a love that stood the test of time. I thought of true romance as being something to hold on to and that endures throughout the trials of life's journey.

This is a lovely tribute to beloved and admired grandparents.

I think that poetry is such a personal thing so my reviews are my reactions to what you have shared. This certainly hit a chord with me as both sets of my grandparents and my parents were married a long long time. Free verse is a wonderful vehicle for communicating in a succinct and moving way.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite passage:

"Love's rose grows
among the thorns of everyday life."

Here, you tie the enduring love to the imagery of the title very well. This lovely poem proves you do not have to have a lot of words to say a great deal and to move your audience. Holding on to that rose, to what is good is an inspiring way to go forward.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea*Your poem tells the engaging story of a young man in an arranged marriage, who makes a choice to stand up for his young bride, when she is taken advantage of by his family. He changes his whole life to stand up for her. I think it's love (as in the answer to the title question) and something more. We all wish that those we love would take our parts in times that are hard. But standing up to one's own family is pretty tough and could have long lasting consequences. You have to admire someone who does what he thinks is right.

When I read poetry, I look for passages and phrases that stick with me, that are memorable. I certainly found that here, more than once.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

It is tough to pick out just one, but this stanza is particularly brilliant:

"There may not have been chocolates
Or flowers, or diamond rings
There may not have been moonlit walks
Down lanes where nightingales sing."

Maybe not those things, but lovely poetry and heroic portrayal of a young man. That's what I found. Remarkable, original and inspirational.

*Cool**Idea*I thought about feeling safe with the one that we love. We find our solace and our home in the arms of someone who cares so much and who we care for. Everything ties back to the title and feeling secure in one's love's embrace.

When reading poetry, I look for lines that are memorable and stay with me. I certainly found that here in your conclusion.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This part was particularly moving:

"Together we rise above
And our love endures
Burning bright
In a world prone to darkness."

In the darkest times, the imagery of darkness - that's when we know we are loved. Expressing all that someone means to us is a difficult task, but you have done it well.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea*I thought of enduring love that leaves one with lasting and comforting memories. Love outlasts life. That is the message of the title and one that inspires and comforts as one struggles to carry on.

Poetry reading is a very subjective thing. I look for memorable phrasing and lines and stanzas that stay with me, something that stands out with romance and wraps around the heart of the reader (that's me). Your use of language to convey feelings and cherished memories is remarkable.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This part stays with me, particularly the last line:

"Honeysuckle-laced breeze kisses my cheek,
reminiscent of the petal-soft taunts
shared between us down by the crooked creek.
A place my memory forever haunts."

To say that memory haunts a place (and not the other way around) is a brilliant turn of language. Why shouldn't that be so. Makes lovely sense to me!
